I am new to FM synthesis and and your explanations of what the different parameters does to the sound is very valuable to me. To analyse and imitate acoustic instruments is a great and very interesting way of learning it. Makes it musical..
Wow Floyd, great job, soundsvery good. Probably as piano-y as a Digitone can get. I remember trying something similar when I owned a DX7 about twenty years ago. IMO the DX7 is a little more complex than a Digitone, I think my results were pretty good if my memory is right. Somehow I have lost the patch data, sadly! I remember thinking at the time combining multiple FM synths, each one making different parts of the sound, would give the best results. I think someone tried this back in the 80s with a 8 part FM synth, the Yamaha TX816.
Thank you very much! The DX7 is more capable as the Digitone with it's 6 operators instead of 4 and way more algorithms. I think using the keyboard tracking / scaling is the key to success here ... But for a more realistic sound, more polyphony and some kind of code to trigger the sympathetic resonant notes would go a long way.
Thanks Floyd for creating all of these very helpful videos. I have a Digitone and I got it because I really liked the sound. I did not even know what FM synthesis was, however now I'm really starting to understand it. I am really becoming a big fan of FM, as well understanding more about musical synthesis...Thanks again!
You seem to really know your way around the Digitone (I'm a total beginner, but having a blast). Do you happen to know if I can use a MIDI foot expression pedal to control the filter frequency (or other parameters)? I'm also new to MIDI, so my apologies if it's a stupid question😬
This patch doesn't really suit the style of music I make with the DN, but I think you did a great job with the sound design and the tutorial was very clear and concise. Great job!
Hi, thanks for watching! I could do this, but there are a lot of good-sounding piano patches for dexed around, so my work would be a bit redundant. ;-) Doing this on Digitone was interesting because of it's special features. It's an interesting hybrid approach to FM.
great patch! I can't help the feeling that demo sounds a little more like an acoustic piano than what you had at the end of the patch. Is it just because the part you're playing in the demo is more natural for a piano, or was there some post-processing involved?
Thanks for watching! This patch has a sweet spot on the keyboard & velocity (which I should have extended by using key scaling, but oh well). It's something to improve upon in the future.
Can you do other classical instruments? I have an idea to do an entirely digitone based orchestral track and cant seem to dial in string, wind, and brass ensemble sounding packs.
Thanks for watching! I did strings some weeks ago: th-cam.com/video/_E47MDz_iF4/w-d-xo.html , also check my sound set: th-cam.com/video/C2wnLZW61fc/w-d-xo.html Best regards!
Thanks for watching! I didn't look it up in the manual, but I'd say it's phase modulation, just like Yamaha's "FM". Sadly, Digitone has a rather limited number of algorithms.
Well, at least you can use this sound to make announcements at an airport. :-)
xD
Woow, thanks man! Great that you wrote everything down at the end. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! :)
@@mr_floydst Thanks for that piano, i already used it in two tracks.

Interesting! The final result sounds great for a FM synth, dare I say this sounds way better than the DX7 acoustic piano's :P.
Yes - I think's it's the addition of that dynamic filter which makes the difference.
Super cool
Thank you!

@@Lo-fi_Hi-brow Yes, it's possible. You can find that in the modulation section of the menu somewhere...
Great video, can't wait to try this out on mine tonight, thank you!
Thanks for watching! :)
Beautiful! Thank you
Beautiful
Great tutorial with some excellent explanations
Thanks for posting this!

Thanks! Yes, this type of sound will get lost in a mix, no high frequencies and no bass in there. ;)
You use a lot of filtering and DSP. Can you try doing this on Dexed?

@@mr_floydst I will try to replicate it, this is why I’m asking. Sounds really good for an FM piano. Thank you!
@@nottieru I have a Digitone patch set online which includes this patch on floydsteinberg.gumroad.com/ (it's a free download)
@@mr_floydst great! Thanks! I wonder what else is there:))

Is this linear FM? Also, this sounds like a more modern version of one of the piano patches from the Sorcerian and Y's games

Do you think it is possible to get a similar patch in the 4-op DAFM synth Genesis? 🤨
I think it's possible. But it will sound a little bit rougher, due to the lack of the filter. :)
