Finding a decent price on Montana land or small home/cabin has become next to impossible right now. Hopefully, Lord willing, the market will drop again so us normal folks can purchase a piece. Thank you sir, what your doing is critical. No one outside of the generational and family farming community should be making decision, restrictions or laws on our food resources as they honestly dont have a clue. I saw really horrid things where I grew up when they placed price restriction on crops, this was the beginning of corporate farming because they bought all those smaller generational farmers out when the restriction broke them. We should of helped them long before now.

I believe most farmers/ranchers don't actually know they're selling their land to foreigners. Usually they'll get a representative to act on their behalf which do not have to reveal the real buyer! So, this is a legislative issue in govt. The tax accessors office will know who the real buyer is!

Trinity: the turnover of currency between purchasers and sellers is called the "velocity" of currency. The higher the velocity, the more economic benefits transpire. In the case of local economics, the more velocity the more economic benefit for the local population of buyers and sellers. This relationship crumbles when the currency flows out of the locality into other economic areas, often even out of the nation. That is why multi-national corporations benefit from slower velocity; to have that occur means that they are pocketing the currency or saving/investing it elsewhere most of the time. It is the relentless pursuit of short-term profits for shareholders and management who do not reside in the area that destroys local economies without regard to the serious population impact of this mainstream strategy.

I farm in Eastern Oregon, watched the first 5 min and thought I'd puke. Farmers put themselves in this problem, the government just let them do it. Since WW2, rural families were sold and accepted the idea they were the same as city people and deserved the same bells and whistle as city people. As a result we got tractors, combine, etc. that are more like luxury cars than farm equipment and carry the cost as such. Amish and Mennonite culture is the best example of a sector of ag that stayed the course and is surviving better than most. When you want expensive toys and Uncle Sam to bail you out when shit goes wrong, there is a cost in money and culture....Welcome to modern farming.

Unfortunately farmers are their own worst enemies collectively - when everybody chases the maximal yield they not only harm the land as described here, but they also harm the price for their products. In addition to that we allow a few big corporate chains to monopolize the markets. The latter one rests as a political liability on both parties. What do the big farm associations do? I see little that would benefit the family farm.

The Reagan administration sounded the death knell for the small farmer and kicked off the monopolization of agriculture. The result has been the overproduction of corn. Reagan put lobbying on steroids which resulted in congress people getting involved in the mega-farms created by putting the small farmers out of business. The result is chemical laden mega farmers which causes increased health care costs from cancers and diabetes. You'll never get a farmer to admit to what Reagan created though, they still think he was great. Most farmers still vote Republican which just further damages the ag industry. Too much to go into here, but major reform is needed and both political parties are now scared to rip the scab off of the bloated Ag Industry.

SMH, farm to table is hard because taking the contract and hyper focusing is LAZY. You're sending all that interest out of your community. Less fuel, smaller equipment, better profit and food security, lower risk through hedged enterprises, better local jobs and training. Grain and cattle, and in parts of the country orcharding, have had tunnel vision for size for 3 1/2 generations. Their not elevation wildlife over human population, they're trying to elevate wildlife population and diversity TO human populations. And that will mean a lot of poorer folks not having kids. But that's ok. It's what will restore sustainability. People in poverty don't think long term and impulse, especially passed through generational example, won't get us there. They need to have the time and money to tackle their mental health without the burdens of parenthood. There's a tax deduction for donation your farmer market leftovers to your local food bank. I'd suggest people look into micro loans and grants for space saving urban method, in rural areas, and take advantage of those loop holes as well as regeneration, habitat, CRP, ect funding.
