      I stopped liking Gibson when I found out Les Paul actually invented his solid body guitar AKA the Log in the Epiphone factory not Gibson 10 years before les Paul gave Gibson even a thought and Les Paul was always with Epiphone from 1940 until his death in August 2009 no.. wonder Gibson can't win any lawsuits they lied about a lot of things

    Great video guys. I love both guitars. I happily play either, but I have to say in terms of mid priced modern reproductions I find most 335s to be more well balanced from bridge to neck pickup. I like the air with the semi hollow construction on the neck position, where is so many LP style guitars are just muddy on that end

    Great video guys! To my ears they are two different guitars, both great but different. You did a good job in describing the how both sound. 335 has a thinner but slightly more range than the LP which has a thicker sound.

    Still reverberating in my brain is the significance of Ramon's comment on the Clapton recording that everyone stated was played on a 335 because all the films show him playing just that guitar BUT it was actually recorded on an SG. Kind of undermines all the detailed analysis by some of the subtle or not so subtle differances between similar guitars of different ages or just differences between different guitars. Real food for thought, Ramon !

    • @TheGuitarShow
      @TheGuitarShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh actually the 335 from the concert footage is exactly that but the live recording which everyone knows from the pub Jukebox is actually an SG sorry if I didn't make that clear. The royal Albert concert is not the well known recording we all know of crossroads sorry I'm confusing myself now!
      I will do a video on it soon to clear it all up.

    • @TheGuitarShow
      @TheGuitarShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had a laugh over your description of the "elegant" Bluesmen with 335 and 355 in the 50s and then the "scruffy" English Bluesman with the Les Paul in the 60s. Actually, that was when I climbed on board the Blues train, after hearing Clapton with the Yardbirds and Mayall in about '66. Is the version of Sitting on Top of the World you mention on this video the one from Dallas October 25, 1968 at Memorial Auditorium? If so then it's actually the Darkburst Les Paul and not the Firebird. There's photos of Eric playing both guitar on this concert but you can hear him change pickups on this particular song so it has to be the Les Paul

    Very informative and comprehensive subject study of two iconic instrument designs. While in my opinion the 335 is a direct descendant of Les Paul’s “Log” design it gets a sound and tone which is a different animal from the Log, but also in my opinion does indeed get a tone and timbre all its own. The Les Paul occupies its own niche and place in music and both are my personal choice in guitars as I have owned many of both models, vintage and new. A good representation of the sound of each and a good comparison would be Billy Gibbons’ tone from ‘71-‘74 (I have some audio only YT vids up from this era) and Alvin Lee’s tone on the Fillmore Live two disc set. Both of these guitars are representative of great Gibson tones. Thanks again for a great presentation. 🇺🇸🎸👮🏻‍♂️

    • @W5AWG
      @W5AWG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While in my opinion the 335 is a direct descendant of Les Paul’s “Log” design OMG you are so wrong. Les Paul had NOTHING TO DO on Either one.
      A We were good friends, and I said Fred, somebody’s got to stop this guy Fender, he’s just about trying to take over. He said, "Ted, anybody with a bandsaw and a router can make a solidbody guitar. But for Gibson to do it, I just couldn’t believe it." Do you know that none of them ever made a solidbody guitar for years?
      Not for a while, no.
      Years.
      Was Les Paul’s only contribution to the design the long tailpiece?
      That’s the only one.
      He’s said that he designed more than that.
      What? What does he claim he did?
      In one interview he said he designed everything but the carved top.
      [Laughs.] Well, actually, I have told you exactly how it got to be a Les Paul. We spent a year designing that guitar, and he never saw it until I took it to Pennsylvania.
      So why would he say that?
      I don’t know. But what is there, outside of the carved top, and the shape, to the design?
      I suppose the combination of the maple and the mahogany is important to the design.
      The sandwich? He never saw it, I’m sure he didn’t know it for years.
      How about the gold-finished top?
      Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty 1957
      We did that because the gold finish covered the blemishes in the wood, the cosmetic appearance. Because guitar players are strange. Now [speaking in 1992] they’re making guitars with maple with... what do they call that? Quilted maple, yes. In the early ‘50s you couldn’t give one away. If it was maple it had to be fiddleback maple, had to be perfect, couldn’t have any blemishes, couldn’t have any mineral streaks in it.
      Was the guitar you had turned out in production?
      You’re talking about the Les Paul? Oh, absolutely. So I got to thinking, you know, at that time Les Paul and Mary Ford were riding very high. They were probably the number one vocal team in the United States. They were earning a million dollars a year. And knowing Les and Mary, I decided maybe I ought to show this guitar to them.
      They were at a hunting lodge, borrowed from a friend of theirs, in Delaware Water Gap, which is up in the mountains in Pennsylvania. Carol, who was Mary’s sister, had an almost identical voice. They could sing a duet, with one of them off-stage-they did this frequently-and it sounded like Mary was singing a duet with herself. Their bass player was Wally Kamin, and Wally was Carol’s husband-so the four of them were a group. They were all together in this lodge up in the mountains.
      I had been talking to Les by phone, and I talked to Phil Braunstein, his financial manager, a New York accountant. So I made a date with Phil, flew into New York, had breakfast, got in his car, and I had this guitar with me.

    2 fantastic Gibson guitars. I have great examples of both. I don't know how the 335 is dialed in? But you can make it sound much fatter and aggressive. Very close to a Les Paul but with more of that hollow airiness. It sounds like the 335 needs a bit more gain or perhaps EQ'd differently. It comes across thinner and less meaty than that 58 LP. Absolutely brilliant video guys - just ‘so’ much to write in a single comment! - I’d say as a performing artist playing on a stage, it’d be the les Paul all day long. I’d also say the lp feels the more powerful instrument whereas the 335 more even toned perhaps - I’ve played 85495 which has the big neck & not too far away from Bob’s - whereas I’d say the early 58 pafs I have in my 58 are more like a 335 in their sound, especially in the middle position - then you’ve got the pots etc etc - Bobs comment about vol on 8 is spot on ! - Probably about the most informative vintage guitar vid out there just now - well done ;)

    No mate. I was born in London and in in 68 I was broke in Manhattan and found myself trying to play at an all black party on 16th. A big black guy stood in front of me, looked at me, and said, 'Kid, YOU AIN'T NEVER HAD THE BLUES.'

    ...I think another factor is the sheer price difference

    As someone with both an Es335 and an LP and many other variations, as much as I like the es335 I feel it is the most overrated guitar style. I wonder if it’s a case of ‘group think’. A few channels have posted the notion that the Es335 is the one guitar to rule them all. It’s a great guitar but I’d be choosing an LP first - and before that a Tele.

    Swap guitars and compare the sound. I'm sure the 335 won't sound so thin. Also use a pick on the 335. You will be surprised.
