I’m not saying it’s the same thing, but I love my natural finish 2000 Epiphone Dot Es-335, maple neck and body with the thin 60’s neck. I got it March 1, 2001, from the first owner who upgraded to a cherry Gibson 335.
I didn’t have another electric for 14 years. I did rock, country, blues, jazz(ish), gospel, orchestra pit, and church gigs with it. I almost changed the pickups in 2021, but then I got to play it with the volume up again and I woke up.
I have since gotten a couple more electrics, but the Dot just does it when I need it. Thanks for your perspective, Justin. You stirred my 335 pride again; God bless you.
335’s are great guitars. If I could only have one guitar it would be a 335. I have a Heritage H-535. Great guitar! Every time I pick it up I appreciate how well it’s made and good it sounds.

The Washburn 335 (1990) I have sounds as good as anything I got (Usa gibson, prs, fender) Stays in tune, good frets, good finish

My first electric was a Ibanez AS 50 in 1983. Great instrument.

That 335 is money in the bank. Sadly, the prices on 1982-1985 335s have gone up quite a bit --- I've been looking and not much there and hate to spend $4K on a dog - so have to play it for sure. I have a 1973 Guild Starfire V - very close but the p/us in a 335 are magic (when you find the right one). If someone has a deal on a post Norlin early 80's 335 - let me know. Justin, going to grab one of those Overdub mugs.
The recent Guild stuff is killer - I was pleasantly surprised.
@@carpediem4413 the newer stuff is actually nice and priced pretty well - played a Guild Manhattan X175-B - nice guitar SW has blondes at $849. On older Guilds - like any vintage can be hit or miss - I have played a newer 335 against my vintage Guild and the Guild holds its own - my '76 D44 acoustic holds up against any same era Martin - it booms.
Love all your videos! Curious....what's your go-to pick? I see a red one here, which makes me think a Jazz 3, but there millions of red picks out there that aren't lol. If it is a Jazz 3, do you prefer the red over the black?
I love a great sounding 335. But those are a bit elusive...
I was extremely fortunate to buy my 335 new in the yr 2000 It is a 1999 limited edition made for the millennium in translucent red with black binding . It has 57 classics and an ebony fretboard with small block markers . There is about 1/2 dozen references to them on the internet and that is all . At first I found the 57 classics a bit dark until I starting using a compression pedal with it and that brought to life with room to spare . I have since bought a Joe Bonamassa 62 Epiphone copy which is a really nice guitar but the Gibson 335 is much more refined . Thankyou for the trouble you have gone to to produce a really good video on the merits of the 335 . I told a friend when I first bought the guitar that I had purchased a 335 and he said sh!t three thirty five (pm) I'm late I'd better pick up the kids and took off ! true story
I have some great guitars, but I bought an Epi 335 this last year and just finished upgrading the bridge and pickups and that thing has become one of my favorite to pick up now. They are so fun!
Love Gibson’s, but never liked the two volume knobs. I started out playing Strats, so I was always forgetting what level the other pickup was set to. I rewired two of my Gibson’s to single volume single tone. Never been happier. 😎
There is some magic to found in the mix of the 2 vol/tone settings but good on ya if you're happy with it. It took some investigating to figure it out.
100%. I love all the in between sounds. An example: if your bridge pickup sounds too biting or bright, go to middle position and roll the neck volume down to taste. You can brighten your neck pickup in the same way. Extremely usable

I just got a 335 in April, it has my same birthday! My question is what if the song kind of needs a Strat middle pickup? How would you use a 335 for that? Use the two pickups and roll back the neck pickup volume a bit?
The pickups are magnets that translate the string vibrations into sound. Do they actually pick up the hollow acoustic wings around the solid center block?
Its just the way it is, it is the stradivari in guitars. I got my 335 , whwn i was 15. 45 years later, its still my No.1 guitar, it can do everything, what other guitars can do, even better. Exept the second position of a strat for funk.
My first eletric guitar was a Ibanez 339 style - then went the Strat way for 30 years - bought at Epi 335 Dot resently and it’s my main guitar now😎.
Great video! Like your points about the middle position, it is so versatile. Ask Randy Bachman what he thinks of it, many of his best lines were from his LP in the middle spot.
I had to look for 10+ years before I found a 1982 335 that sings and plays amazing. They are out there but rare to find! I'm still looking for another or another great Les Paul (even harder to find).

I concede on the 335 thats my number 1 as well.. But I will throw in the ring, an SG just a standard SG yes I had to drop pots and pickups in it. But, it goes from clear and sparkle to pure rock n roll to blues without the bulk and without the price tag. I believe USA manufacturers are pushing prices of hollow and semi hollow up beyond the average player, because they want you to buy the imports, because they are labor intensive. I love my 335 but my back up is an SG standard. Enjoy the video, great conversation.

I got one also. I liked it stock, however, I dropped some SD Pearly Gates and had the pots, wiring, and switch redone.

@@bigwavedave8492 I don't mind the split-pickup. It has two volume knobs and two tone knobs, one for each PU, so it can be blended pretty nicely (in my unprofessional opinion).

When I was still a teenager I worked at a factory for two months, so I had enough money to basically buy any guitar I wanted. And I wanted a 335 (or something very similar). I spent a whole day trying multiple 335’s and such and what I took home with me was a 347. I loved that guitar. I still have it and I’ll never sell it.
It’s different from a 335 in the fact that it has a maple neck with an ebony board and it’s got a single coil switch. Gibson made two versions of this model. I have the second version, which I think is the slightly better one (the differences are small, but significant enough for me to prefer the one I have.
I forgot to mention that the pickups are a bit hotter as well, which is usually something I don’t really like, but it allows me to turn down the amp a little and still have that edge of breakup thing going. And it still sounds just as amazing to me. The neck is extremely comfortable in the weirdest of ways, meaning it begins flat (D shaped), relatively thin and narrow and where it meets the body it’s round, fairly thick and wide. And because of it, it feels equally as comfortable wherever you are on the neck, due to the fact that higher up the neck the frets are closer together. I’m not sure if this makes sense (English is not my native language), but it’s the best neck on any guitar I own.
Now I know that many people hate the sound of split humbuckers, but I use that function a lot, because it sounds amazing. I don’t know how they did it, but it’s much more than just a usable sound. I own a couple of Telecasters, but sometimes it seems like that 347 can create better Telecaster sounds than my Telecasters.
All black, well loved, full of scratches and dings, golden hardware almost faded to a subtle glow, bindings colored to a yellowish brown… and most importantly, I don’t need any other guitar to create the most important sounds with it, except for the typical in between Stratocaster sounds, but - don’t shoot me - as much as I love Stratocasters (5 of my first 6 guitars were in fact Stratocasters) I never really got on with the sound of them. I don’t have that problem when other people play them, but when I do it never sounds right.
Anyway…, my black ES-347… can you tell I’m in love?

I just got a no name 335 copy... interesting guitar to play... its just such a FULL sound, that works brilliantly with distortion and high gain.
I have a epiphone dot, no pickups. What do you guys recomend to buy, pickups and tuners? Ohh i want it to sound like Justins 335....
Mine has tonepros Kluson tuners and Tom Holmes pickups. I would maybe try Throbak PAFs though.

'speaks well' is a good description for ES-335 tone. They are very vocal, sing like a voice. Sort of like the Viola of the electric guitar world. And maybe that's the bigger semi-hollow body. I think of my ES-335 as my most tasteful, aged sounding guitar. I like the bridge tone, but, for trashy / raunchy rock n' roll bridge tones, I think I prefer an Epiphone Casino slightly more. ES-335s sound really nice with a Bigsby too. That vocal tone responds really well. They're also one the guitars (along with the Telecaster) that bring out the best in a tremelo & spring reverb. Love Es-335s, Casinos & Gretsch through a Vox AC set to slightly trashed.
I call it the More Paul. More of everything you want from a Les Paul - more highs, more lows, and most importantly more sustain.
I'm thinking of buying a new es335 and straight away putting humbucker size p90s on it. What are your thoughts?

Really great channel, Justin-I’m a session guitarist in NYC-I had to chime in:I had a 59 345 w double whites that I wish I didn’t sell. Couple of 62 cherry 335s I didn’t dig the flat wide necks on. Here’s a great tip guys-Monty’s guitars neck PAF sounds exactly like my fave real PAF neck pu’s. I’m using an Aria Pro ii 345 from 79 I gutted. Poly finish tho….ugh
I own a Gibson ES-345, the most versatile guitar I own. There is absolutely nothing
I can't do on it. My Les Paul might be my #1, but I prefer my ES-345 every now and then.
The Les Paul does its Les Paul thing best if that makes sense. The ES-345 can bring more creative ideas
out of me. If you want to just pick up a guitar and play without being plugged in late at night? The ES-345
gets a ride. Your ES-335 sounds excellent by the way.

Bobcat has always played with other guitar players with humbucker pickups, but they never worked in his hands. For him, it's all about the fender or gretsch or p90 Gibson guitars. Humbuckers are always too muddy and not dynamic enough
Made it to the Kansas City Guitar Show last weekend to see what was available. At least six 335’s and one 339. They weren’t giving them away. Super cool window shopping event. Using a Gretsch G5420T for now with the tone knobs turned way down for an Allman Brothers feel. I’ll keep searching.

Being semihollow yields some more acoustic and ring tones compared to solid bodies in general, it sounds like with more dimension. I got convinced and I'll be looking for a 335, for me its biggest strength is versatility, stands out wonderfully in many styles thru the decades (Ok, not for metal in general, but clean passages in a song could sound amazing)

I recently acquired a “99 Yamaha SA2200. Looks gorgeous. Very comfortable being able to rest my picking arm on the body. The neck is a *bit* too shallow for my liking but it’s not a showstopper. The stock pups are clear and bright, not muddy. Also has coil split capabilities which may serve as useful but it comes with a volume drop. Would love to compare with a real ES335 to evaluate the differences.
Mine is a 2018 Memphis ES-335 Figured Blonde with MHS pups. I love everything about it, even the pink binding.
Check out Van Morrison doing Bring It On Home . He's got a guy playing a red 335 . The man understands how to utilize it to it's utmost .
I couldn’t agree more, Justin! I don’t have a true, 335, but I have something similar with my Eastman T185 it’s an inch smaller all around than a 335 and it has solid construction with mahogany back and sides and a carved maple top. I’ve had this guitar now for about 11 or 12 years. It’s consistently one of my top guitars to grab when it comes to recording sessions, or virtually any style of gig. It was quite the revelation when I got it.. I love the upper fret access and the huge range of tones available. I love the sparkle which I find lacks in a lot of HB equipped guitars.. mine doesn’t have a full centre block, but rather just a block under the bridge. I find that this does most of what the full centre block does in terms of mitigating feedback, but makes the Guitar nice and lightweight as well. Great video man!
Justin, do you have any experience with the smaller bodied variations like the 339? I'm a smaller guy and the 335 feels pretty big to me. Do the smaller bodied semi hollows bring the same magic?
No idea. I have heard that the 336 leans more toward a Les Paul
I'm just an amateur player but imho it's difficult to play well and make the most of a guitar you're uncomfortable with, be it body size, neck, balance, etc... Imagine driving the nicest car but you have to stretch forward to reach the throttle with the tip of your toes... I'd rather drive my Mazda 3
What’s hard to reach on a 335? I get that they look big... I’m not a big guy, but I think it’s my most comfortable guitar to play
@@JustinOstrander hey Justin, for me it's the right arm, kinda needs to hang on the lower bout as my arms aren't long (fingers as well). I feel more comfortable with the 339-style guitars (339, Ibanez AM, Hagstrom Alvar).
By the way Justin, in a recent video, and relatively often you mentioned being relaxed to play better. Do you think you can give more tips about ergonomics, posture, etc on future videos! Thanks!

Great video! I've got a budget 335 copy that I supped up with everything I could. It sounds amazing now but unfortunately still feels cheap. Nothing I can do about that. It was my first guitar that I bought for myself after I got serious about playing and even though I've got a much nicer Les Paul I still grab that 335 sometimes. Eventually I'd really like to get a real one or Heritage or something close to the real thing. I think they are really comfortable and since they're not as heavy as a Les Paul (which I believe ought to be heavy) it's a rest for my back and shoulder.

What power/preamp tubes are you running in your deluxe…if that’s not giving up classified information? The stock tubes in my 68 were horrible, they are a lot of why these get a bad rap. I jammed the rca’s that are original to my 74 Twin and the amp is silent and sounds great, but they are a little down on gain. I am looking to put them back in the Twin and get the 68 it’s own tubes.
Honestly, I’m using new EH tubes. A good matched set biased right and I don’t miss chasing the NOS stuff
Try adjusting your pole piece screws on your humbucker to the contour of your fretboard radius. Raise the pick up higher than you know it should be plug in the guitar strike an open string, the note will oscillate. Back the humbucker down until it stops oscillating (much like a string that is out of tune into tune!)
90% of the time and that will fix any humbucker tonal issue!
It doesn't matter to me what people say about the choke in the 345 varitone circuit, there is a world of different tones in that varitone/stereo set up. This guitar takes your 5 reasons to several more.
I recently added a Taurus Servo II (first pedal the pickups see) - I'm lovin' it. It does take a "set" of stereo conversion cables to tame the beast but it is well worth it. With a little help from The Doug and Pat Show I'm still getting surprises from the interplay between the volume/tone/varitone settings. You want to know anything about 335/345/355's - these guys are killer.
I can see why you like that 335. Aesthetically speaking that and the Tele body shapes are my two favorite twang bangers. Keep up the good work bud.
I love 335 and it's true that they are brighter than Les Pauls. Many pple think semi hollows are darker, and its not true. However in the new gibson linups they put t types in 335 and I dont like them, too bright. I put seth lovers or mhs in mine
The middle pos sounds like a tele in pos 2 with the tone @5. Those sound great thru a cranked voxy amp.
I actually just bought my first 335...2012. Not my go to...yet, but we'll see.
I have had the privilege of having a clients '66 at my little studio for a few months. It does everything you say and has the most beautiful sounding neck pickup I have ever heard. I assume they are Pat sticker pickups. This one has a trapeze tailpiece and it doesn't do the chunky rock thing quite as well, but beyond that it is an incredible instrument that covers all the things you mentioned..
You led me to the ET65. It works so well for so many guitar and amp combinations. I took it out of my amp foolishly, trying something else... and it went right back in.

I couldn't agree more!! I just bought a 1981 with Tim Shaw pickups in it. That guitar covers all the ground live I would ever need!! It's without a doubt my favorite. You are right about the price too. I got it for under $4,000. Love your channel! Thanks for sharing all the stuff you do.
My ES-335 equivalent is a late '90s Epiphone Sheraton II with Lollar Empirial Low Winds. It's often the guitar I reach for when I want a combination of thickness and clarity, but not the same kind of thickness and clarity that I get from my '56 Goldtop Reissue. That relatively inexpensive Korean guitar holds its own among handmade Custom Shop guitars.
I' ve got fairly recent Epi 335 and Sheraton ii Pro. Both great guitars, but the Sheraton has two ProBuckers that make the 335 sound a little dull by comparison.
I recently bought a Gibson Custom '64 -- and I am still looking to create the sound I am looking for. When I hear a posting that achieves I a sound I like, It would be helpful if you would mention the type of Amp and type of Strings you are using.

How do you think the ES335 compares to a Thinline Tele with HBs? Are they in the same ballpark because that is a much more attainable/affordable guitar in most cases.
To me, they’re totally different worlds. Tele is going to be brighter, more chime and bite and more “immediate” for lack of a better word due to the scale length and maple neck.
Still got the Tom Holmes pickups in your 335? Any idea if they're potted or unpotted?
I do. Not sure on the potting. I think I asked for unpotted when I ordered them.

I went the 339:route. Very happy.
You know, I hear great things but I’ve never spent any time with one.
Those 339s are very comfortable depending on your stature. I’m about 5:10 so I love the feel of a 339. I have an Eastman t185 and it splits the difference being a 15 inch lower bout. It also has a side mounted jack like a 339 which I enjoy.

Ah, the 335, the other "one guitar for everything" that people always mention along with the Tele. Funny how they're so different yet people say the same thing about them.

I notice the parallel appreciations of the Tele & 335 among commenters here and guitarists in general, too. With my #1 being a JV Modified Telecaster and #2 being a Sheraton II Pro, that's reassuring.
The Epiphone adds to the reasons the style is so versatile, given its split coil feature along with its greater affordability over Gibson 335s without any real sacrifice for the savings. Granted, Probuckers aren't exactly Burstbuckers, but one can barely tell when plugged into a decent tube amp. The only complaint it merits is its neck drive tendency.

Prices on all 335s (all used Gibsons/US Fenders really) have risen considerably here in the UK. about 10 years ago I had to sell my '88 335 Dot Reissue, I just about got £1800 for it, now it seems any 80s and 90s 335 is up in the 3.5-4k range which seems crazy. The only thing I can put it down to is the covid effect.
Yeah I hear you. Heritage, Epiphone masterbuilt, older Ibanez and Yamaha are all good options, too. Yank the guts and put a set of good PAF clones and proper 500k pots, and you’re good to go
@@JustinOstrander Yeah, I picked up a Yamaha semi a year ago with triple P90s, and a Bigsby, yes there is a difference, but for less than £700, its not that much of a difference!
I put some Lollar Novel 90s (P90s) and 50s wiring into my Epiphone Dot. It sounds really good to me. Although the 335 is a big guitar, the shape is better ergonomically (for me) than a Les Paul.
Les Pauls are weird when sitting; they typically don’t balance well for me. SGs are weird when standing; the strap button puts the neck farther out to my left. A 335 always feels just right to me. At the end of the day, it’s one of many tools. I just always feel comfy with it.
@@JustinOstrander Indeed. I just sold a Les Paul largely because I didn't like playing it while sitting. The 335 is better ergonomically, but still not as good as my Tele! I don't like strats much either. For my basement playing, all I really need is a Tele.
Seeing Rusty Anderson live with Paul McCartney got me into 335s. No wonder I ended with a signature model of his. Had to swap pickups several times until I was happy. 335s rule!
What pickups did you land on?
@@JustinOstrander Monty's PAFs. Wonderful clarity if you need, and really great solo tone on the bridge, much like you demoed in your video. No muddy neck tone. And a lot of fun in the middle position. Such a versatile guitar, I'm absolutely with you.
Hey Justin, I have a question. Do you think there is a vintage/brand snobbery that excludes players for not having the 'cool vintage' look? I'd love to have a stable of vintage pieces that say 'I'm legit' but considering at least two of Tommy Tedesco's main instruments were Yamahas, it's certainly not necessary to only have the 'correct' brand or model to get the job done. Does this ring true, or are players being judged by what they take out of their cases and not the music that comes out of their hands? Thanks for sharing your experiences and tips!
It’s not so much a snobbery as it is an aesthetic. My advice is to dress for the job you want. Doesn’t mean you have to look like Slash or Jack White or whoever. But maybe a flame top PRS is not helping you to “dress for the part” in terms of the visual aesthetic or tone on the Americana gig you’re auditioning for. There are far more affordable versions of the highly desired vintage pieces that offer the feel and most of the tone for a fraction of the price.
@@JustinOstrander Ok, I get that for the gigs where you are seen, but what about sessions? Do producers expect or prefer to hire guys with gear in that genre, or are they more open to players who can get the right sounds irrespective of the visual (and therefore perceived) tonal aspect? If I have a modern guitar and amp rig that can get the tone they want, am I going to encounter 'discrimination' based on looks?
As a hired gun for this recording, would you tell the artist that the two guitarist on the record are not listening to each other?
No. They asked me to replace all those parts and do what I think is best. I’ll do that and send it off.
Hi justin I have a 2013 Memphis any thoughts on the wire they used for the neck. I have been told the thicker wire is the reason I am having tuning issues. I love the guitar but can’t gig with because of the tuning issues it has any thoughts?
Not sure what you mean about the wire on the neck. Do you mean fret wire?
Tuning issues in my experience are almost always the result of poorly filed nut slots or bridge saddles. Find a good tech locally. Tuning issues are solvable and should never be the reason for selling a guitar.
@@JustinOstranderI was told Gibson was using thicker frett wire. I live in Toronto and have had it into some of the top shops they all say that’s the way with gibsons. I bought a string butler for it which helped a bit. I mainly play fenders and Godin’s jut for trust issue. If you have any suggestions I am open to it. Thx love your channel learning alot.

It sounds so good. I have a 335 copy and it’s really dark. Feels like an EQ settling but I play a tele most of the time. Yours sounds completely different from mine.
I bet your pots are 300k. Thats like having the correct 500k pots rolled down about halfway. You might have really hot wound pickups, too.

I put an all new harness in mine. If you tie a string around each pot shaft, output jack, and the pickup selector switch, you can thread them through the hole each is supposed to go from the bridge pickup cavity and pull the entire harness through the bridge pickup cavity into place at once. It’s really not bad. I wired extension leads for the pickups to my pots so if I want to change pickups in the future I don’t have to move the pots again. Good luck!

lately, guys are reaching for their T-185's from Eastman. Used ones can be found for around $1300-1700, and you get all solid woods (solid flame maple top with nicely figured mahogany body/neck) 25" scale EBONY board. b/w/b/w/b binding with w/b/w on the f-holes. 1.72'' bone nut. great sounding humbuckers, and they play nice. I'd be really nervous if I were a Gibson employee.
Ive got a an 1985 Ibanez AM75, and I play hard rock and metal with it. Its more of a ES 339 small body, but similar.
