I’m an amateur blues player and always played single coil guitars. Strats or strat like for many years but the last 3 years telecaster. I wanted to try something different and therefor recently bought an epiphone es 335. I must say that I’m very impressed with that guitar, it’s playing and feeling far better than I had hoped. Main guitar is still my American pro ii Tele that I bought a year ago, but it’s so nice to have a completely other sounding guitar to work with too. The guys in my bad loved it 😊
Thank you, Paul. My first decent guitar back in 1964 was an Epiphone and they were made in Kalamazoo right alongside the Gibson branded instruments. My mom's uncle worked there. Thank you very much for your side x side comparo.
Thanks Paul, you prove it’s the player, not the axe. There’s nothing wrong with buying high quality guitars, especially if you enjoy owning them. They always hold their value. But I just got this Riviera and I too love it. You’re right, the frets are gritty out of the box, but a spot of polish is all they need. Great review, thanks again
This was basically a humbucker vs mini humbucker. My Epi is a (Valensi) Rivera with P94's. They are the P90 in a humbucker case. When I compare mine with a humbucker 335, its the P94's that shine. I play at a slight roll offed volume (8) and with my Peavey delta blues at the edge if breakup. This allows my passive or aggressive play to determine the saturation on leads and still able to give a sweet rhythm tone when needed. To me, this combo of amp and guitar is a giggers delight.
Congratulations on the new guitar, you've certainly had a decent wait for it to come in. I keep hearing how good the Epiphone range is these days, not least from the excellent Colin on The Guitaristas channel who has been tempting me with his 'breakdowns' for months now. I wish the affordable guitar market offered such quality back when I started playing nearly 50 years ago! The truth of the law of diminishing returns doesn't quite cover the feeling of a high quality instrument in the hand and in the head, even if the 5+ times price has only bought you an extra few cents 'uplift'. I hope the new guitar has been something of an epiphany (I'll get my coat). Cheers, man.
I noticed something right away in the shootout... and it stands to reason... the Gibson semi hollows are reinforced and the pickups are thoroughly potted to allow them extreme volumes before feedback... making them the pro choice for many years, and therefore more expensive, even though es175 may cost more to make and play just as well... and the Epi... sounded better... because the pickups weren't as potted, bringing in the tone from the body, and sustaining better, even feeding back at lower volumes... but likely it wouldn't be possible to play at thunderous volumes... that seems to be the long and short of it! Lol
Aye, just knock the bloody nail in man .... and stop admiring the hammer ! lol ..... fabulous stuff Paul. Really lovely guitar. It stands up very well against the 335 ... but will it still be as close a call after a decade or so ? The Gibson will always hold its value so it is the more prudent financial investment .... and a beautiful instrument to boot :)
Howzitgoing kid, talking about busking(how's that for a lead in), I was out Xmas shopping last Saturday in Argyll Street in Glasgow and there was a wee homeless guy sitting singing GIVE A LITTLE BIT, GIVE A LITTLE BIT OF MY LIFE TO YOU, I said to him "hey that's SUPERTRAMP ", he said "Thanks man". Got to say Paul, the tones you are getting from a very modestly priced guitar are surprisingly good, well done kid, and now for the real story of the week. Paul the Riviera sounds great and serves its' purpose. Like you said, you don't want one of your dream guitars stolen. Plus you need a guitar that sounds good while busking. There are quite a few "cheap" guitars that serve their purpose for this. As always great playing. Your videos are so soothing and I look forward to them every week. Keep up the great work!

I recently came into possession of a Japanese one with a stop tail and mini buckers. Lucky day as the shop had it priced in line with a current production used one. As always I very much enjoy your content.
Nice, honest review Paul. Not at all surprised that you like the Epiphone. I agree, they play well, especially for the price range, but they definitely lack the velvety smooth feel and depth of sound from the customs. The side by side comparison is where you really notice the difference in sustain and fuller tones of the Gibson, but the playability of the Epiphone is much more reasonable than most realize.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Gotta play one to know one.😁 I definitely miss my 63 Original Les Paul (SG before it was called SG), but I am not paying $40,000 to try and find another like it, besides you only get one opportunity to own a brand new one once and if you let go of it, your history with it ends. I've always been a Gibson guitar guy and Fender bass. Although my 95 Epiphone Les Paul Special Frankentar with Seymour Duncan Invader pickups is a lifetime keeper. Gibson just got it right from the beginning and that's everyone is still trying to get those originals, they just sound right.🤙
Very cool guitar, congrats! I just re-watched the rig rundown with Robben Ford where he talks about his Riviera and he says he almost never goes away from the neck pickup on that guitar. Interesting. I can agree with you on the shiny chrome and am guessing we'll see some dulling of the hardware and the shiny stuff in a while 😃 About the a little rigid toggle switch, I had the same with my sunburst ES-335 when I first got it. A drop of contact cleaner into the hole (I didn't screw it open) took care of that and it has work fine ever since. You probably know of this already, but I'll also just mention that for the frets, I think a "Fret eraser" from StewMac will be a good, cheap and easy tool to handle that. Damn, now you've got me wanting one of these guitars 😄 Cheers, Thor
Your playing is really creative. I like your style a lot. And that guitar sounds incredible! I hadn’t heard of this model until a few minutes before I found your video, and you may have just convinced me it’ll be my next instrument… very cool tones from those mini humbuckers!
Hi Paul ! Greetings from Akron , Ohio USA ! And Merry Christmas to you and your family ! Epiphone sounds great . I have a Sheraton and a Dot Deluxe . Both are excellent guitars , even though they are not Gibsons , they are quite good build quality and tone . My feeling is that guitar makers of all sorts are making better guitars than in the past . My last Gibson es335 was a disappointment , and I wound up selling it . Of course it was made in 1982 , during a rough patch for all builders . We are in a new golden age of guitar building ! Still playing my American Fenders , but I am very happy with my Epiphones ( played thru a Fender tube amp of course) . I have to say that your playing just gets better and better ! You are a certified guitar player my friend !!!
That is a great demo on that Epi Riviera. Recently acquired a 2011 Cherry ES-335 Custom Pro from the Epiphone custom shop out of China. (There is a very good tour of the factory on TH-cam.) They are 70% hand-crafted and excellent. This model has full Alnico 4 Humbuckers. It is a dream to play and here in Canada I saved $4400 when I purchased this one used with a hardshell case.
Absolutely fantastic playing, Paul! A few months back I purchased an Epiphone ES-335 and absolutely love it! The pickups are clean and clear... I'm very impressed with it. The only thing I think needs improvement are the frets. Could use a little work. Other than that, the guitar stays in tune, plays great and sounds great! Nice review!
Great review, and fantastic playing! Yes, that is a very handsome guitar. Mine is a 2010 cherry Epiphone Dot, which I bought for only $199 U.S. Not only was it used, but I was told that the finish was a “defect”, inasmuch as there weren’t enough coats of stain applied beneath the protective coating- which I find hilarious, since to my eye the prominence of the wood grain through the dark cherry finish makes the guitar look like it was a Custom Shop design! Anyway, thank you for demoing such a cool guitar. I wasn’t aware of the Riviera stamp until now. Subscribed!
Your tone is superb...part of that is your great playing. I'm disappointed to find these, too, are built in China and not Indonesia. But this demo has made me very interested to get one. Those mini-humbuckers are superb. I bought an aftermarket set- the bridge is headed for a Reverend and the neck for a Tele. Thanks for the great video!
I got one of these when they first came out. Pretty impressed with it straight from the store, but with a new wiring harness, a little work on the frets and a proper setup, it’s fantastic. You’d have to spend considerably more to get a lot better
Hi John what's a wiring harness I'm having a slight bridge rattle problem I've had it set up and my man who does it says the bridge would need replacing
@@Paulrezzano wiring harness just refers to the pots, switch and input. I had those all replaced. Honestly, wasn’t that much of a difference it probably didn’t need to be done. Are you sure it’s not the tailpiece? I think they just kind of buzz a bit. I hear quite a bit of rattle when I play it acoustically, but none when plugged in. It’s just one of the idiosyncrasies of these guitars
@@johnmundt7834 no it's fine plugged in it's just the acustic play and I think I've got paranoid listening out for it 🤣🤣 I love the guitar I just want it to sound perfect if I have to live with it so be it just thought it was faulty john nice one for getting back to me pal 🤟🤘
Thank you so much MostlyPostie 👍. And I’m delighted to hear you enjoy Colin’s channel too (The Guitaristas). I’m really enjoying his back catalogue of vids.
Vintage Epiphones were were built in the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo! I have a 1966 Epiphone Sorrento... similar, though hollow, also with mini humbuckers, also a quality guitar!
Well done Paul ! So nice comping and composition and above all nice comparision with the ES335 ! Very instructive and useful when wondering about buying one ! I already own a Casino epiphone Casino coupe wich amazes me everyday for the price and was wondering about getting a bigger body and humbuckers. Many thanks and cheers from France !
I am the same I got a 2007 Korean Sheraton at a guitar show and am really impressed with it plus I have gibsons ..great post cheers 👍you are a great player ..
The frets on my Epi Casino were a bit scratchy to start with but with a fair bit of playing they seem to have smoothed out. It had a bit of rattle from the bridge retaining wire, but I gave it a bit of a bend and it's tight now and doesn't rattle. For the price the Epis are great. I have a Riviera on the way now, a sparkling burgandy. Love the sounds you are getting out of yours.
Excellent, I’d be keen to hear what you think of yours, when it arrives. I’ve just swapped the gauge 10 strings for 11s, and I’ve just oiled the fretboard. So I’m really quite chuffed with it 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Again, I am really impressed with these Epiphones. The Sparkling Burgandy looks fantastic. Set up is perfect. I really like the mini humbuckers, I like the top end sound, pinch harmonics just leap out. I have a few Gibsons as well but I prefer the build of the Epiphones. I know theh construct their fretboards differently and everyone loves nibs on a Gibson board but the Epiphones are just finiahes nicer. My Gibson LP still had scratchy frets that needed a polish. Can't get over how good the Riviera is, and for the price too.
I love how you let your notes RING whether playing clean or dirty, we can HEAR the guitar! Some of the best review playing EVER… plus you have a delicious feel and style! Where do you busk? I’ll drop by if I’m ever in Blighty!
Great review, awesome tones. I could stay on that neck pickup for days...but nighttime would come eventually. Tasteful playing, those sweet doublestops are definitely worth throwing a couple pounds your way. Cheers from the US
The cheap guitar market is crazy nowadays. I bought a Harley Benton HB-35Plus Vintage Burst last year for 200 quid that sounds great. A low risk 335. Same theory with buying northern soul reissues for £20 instead of carting the original £1000 records across town at 4 in the morning.
Sweet chording, lovely touch. You showed the Riviera in its best light. They truly are photogenic instruments. I've been searching for some sort of ES for more than a year. The Riviera looks like a really strong contender, particularly as it comes with the mini buckers. Thanks for nice approach to reviewing.
I have a really nice Musoo ES-335 copy that had rough frets like that - just playing with lots of bending for a couple of weeks “polished” them perfectly smooth.
Hi Paul, Yes, all the glossy hardware. I always take some Scotchbrite pad to it all, and get a very nice satin finish that looks great. Those guitars are fantastic with a unique tone.
Great playing and review! My 2020 Epi Riviera - Tan, like yours - is one of my best guitars, and I own some heavy hitters. This guitar represents the best money, I've spent in a long, long time indeed. Like one of the commenters below states: Too good for the money, really. Beautifull instrument in every way.
I think that Cornelll amp is Super man. Yes and you are too I'm not forgetting you haha.. I'm going to get me one of those one day. But as far as guitars go I like your telecaster and your Gibson through that Cornell it's is the bomb ..just the suttle things come through on that no doubt. And you become part of those guitars when you play no doubt...Which you need cuz you have so much touch for that little stuff what means everything though that's just my opinion. But as always it's whatever you're comfortable with taking on a street or where you're going to at or doing whatever
A fret polish with an 'ink eraser' will clean up that grittiness, polish them up and hey presto! I own a custom shop limited edition dot 335 Epiphone, a black one with Gibson humbuckers (upgraded) - I love it.
I bought a Sheraton ii and never looked back. I also have an ol G&L Legacy which is my single coil go to. Love these higher end epis tho. They do great work after a smidge of set up.
It’s a very pretty guitar, I know you like relic guitar, but I like pristine so I really dig the new one, to each their own, it sounds beautiful ! Of course the Gibson sounds richer to my ears but E will be great for street play, and you being such a great musician that’s a for sure positive.
Great video Paul. I was really impressed with the Epiphone ….. and then you plugged in the Gibson. No comparison, but it’s a great guitar for busking nevertheless.
Paul, your videos are always outstanding and inspiring! Your playing is superb. In my experience, the Epiphone ES style guitars have always been outstanding instruments…and by all accounts the newer versions are the best yet. Enjoy your Riviera!
Fantastic playing Paul. I have a Riviera 250 purchased used in 1986. It has a little story. It was built in Japan in the late 1970's or early 80's. Not sure since at the time serial numbers were duplicated for some reason. There was no internet at the time so I couldn't do any research. It was my first electric guitar so I've kept it.
Lovely tones from that Epi Paul....I'm not too keen on the white scratch plate....I got a black Gibson copy scratch plate from Amazon for my epi sheraton...just looks like a 335 lol.
Thank you Mike. Yes, I’m still a complete newbie when it comes to doing that. I have my little “set pieces” that I like to do, but I’m always trying to expand my repertoire 🤣
Looks and sounds beautiful Paul! Maybe your playing helps....!! I've heard all of your guitars and that definitely has it's own voice and doesn't duplicate one of the others. The bridge is clear and sparkling. You have got me gassing for one!! Looks stunning. Enjoy, you deserve it.
Thank you Brian. And who knows, you might see me next summer, Riviera in hand, doing my busking thing in Aberdeen (I think that’s where you said you were from). 😊🤘
...but heck, the real reason I tune in is to hear your playing and top up me fuel tank with high octane inspiration (thank you so very much) ...and I know that even t'were/t'was it genuine junk, I know you'd eek out some sweet tones (!) & IMHO them mini humbuckers from Epi are so fun and different
Hey Paul. As always, the playing is just something else! Seems like you do a bit of busking, given how many times you've referred to it. Would love to see a street video some time... they are a TH-cam genre after all. Would be cool to hear you play outdoors.
Thank you Paul, I appreciate the compliment 😊. Yes, I really must do that…. although I’d be using my iPhone to provide the backing tracks, and so I’d need a separate camera and camera person…. and I always tend to be alone when out busking…. But maybe one day I’ll figure out how to overcome the logistics.
Nice review-and I noticed the pickguard 'E' has done its traditional disappearing act (most of them spontaneously drop off). I'm considering one of these to partner my Masterbilt Texan. Thanks.
Hi Paul as usual really useful, I would love you to do a breakdown sometime of that piece you played while comparing the two guitars, I've heard you playing it before and love the chords you use. Keep doing what you do I get the impression most of us on here love your no nonsense and honest approach to all things guitar :)
Hi Feilim. Yes, everyone says something similar every time I play it. And yet, all I know is that I took the general vibe and chord sequence from a TH-cam video featuring Michael Caswell and Joe Bonamassa. If you type “Guitar Interactive Magazine Joe Bonamassa” into TH-cam you’ll see the influence. Maybe I’ll do a breakdown one day 👍
Hello paul nice sounding guitar mate The wife just got me a early Christmas present (a loop pedal) I am just getting my head around it now It shows every mistake I make one good thing is it helps with your timing or my timing I should say This could be the best toy I've ever had Again great lessons from you THANKS
I get how you're not supposed to like the Epiphone, but it sounds great. A good idea for busking, yes! Never foolish buying those vintage guitars, they do appreciate!
Awesome playing, mostly clean with pleasant licks. I could listen for hours. Since I'm a single coil fan, the Epiphone mini humbuckers sound more bright and clearer. I think the riviera has more soul and mojo than the gibson
I am with you. I just got a Sheraton 1962 RI. It has American mini hums. Quality and sound are excellent. I am starting bro wonder why I have my 335 63 block RI.
Hi Paul great video and as usual some really nice tasteful playing. You always seem to be able to get 'in the zone'. I've been looking at one of these without pulling the trigger just yet. It looks gorgeous and sounds very pleasing. It's not a patch on your Es335 but for the price you wouldn't expect it to be. Enjoy your playing 'al fresco' and hopefully it'll bring in a bob or two. Who knows it might even pay for itself!
We ALL do, Paul! That thing sounds fabulous!!! Run some FOUR ZERO (0000) steel wool over those frets (I hit the fretboard wood, too, then oil), and those frets will come to life! BTW: They left the "E" off of your pickguard! I don't know if it is the guitar or the amp, but you are getting a nice midrange sound out of this, that I really like! The Gibson humbuckings are a little fatter and a bit warmer than the Epiphone, but the "Phone" has its own sound, and that's a good thing!
Man....your a tasty player. Excellent phrasing. You give me hope for guitar music. Any chance you have any tutorials on how to use the diminished scales like you do? I still struggle knowing exactly where to throw them in.
Thank you 🙏. Delighted you like my playing. Actually, a few other players have asked about the same thing…. So I’ve got that on my do list of vids to post. Hopefully coming soon 😊
I bought this guitar a few weeks ago and felt the same as you. It was almost too good for the price and kind of brought me to a crisis point over the more expensive guitars I have! I had a couple of sharper fret ends and the same fret polish issue you mentioned, nothing else.
Great playing Paul, sounds great on the o/d neck pickup…yep I know that feeling when a cheaper guitar sounds as good as a more expensive one. I’ve got an 1987 MIJ Strat and a Custom Shop. Say no more..😉
Beautiful Epiphone, i have and you’ll think I’m crazy for this but i sold my Gibson 335 and Les Paul and bought both more affordable versions, to be transparent I’m a Fender guy but still want the Gibson vibe but without the price tag 🏷 used the cash from my Gibsons to buy more Fenders 😁😁😁 Excellent playing as ever Paul , love your uploads mate. More camping with beautiful scenery/ guitar talk please 🙏 Cheers John.
My jaw dropped when I read your comment 😩. But then you qualify it with with some good old common sense, especially if you’re naturally more of a Fender guy. Cheers John, I forgive you for selling your Gibsons. (No I don’t you crazy maniac!! 🤣)

I agree, they play well, especially for the price range, but they definitely lack the velvety smooth feel and depth of sound from the customs.
The side by side comparison is where you really notice the difference in sustain and fuller tones of the Gibson, but the playability of the Epiphone is much more reasonable than most realize.
Thanks GW. And I’m secretly pleased you noticed an extra “something” with the Gibson 🤣
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Gotta play one to know one.😁
I definitely miss my 63 Original Les Paul (SG before it was called SG), but I am not paying $40,000 to try and find another like it, besides you only get one opportunity to own a brand new one once and if you let go of it, your history with it ends.
Thank you Thor, and cheers for the tips! 👍
Great sounding and dynamic guitar and player! A very good demo- thanks! I want the Burgundy Riviera!
Thanks Joe, yes the Burgundy one is rather gorgeous.
Your playing is really creative. I like your style a lot. And that guitar sounds incredible! I hadn’t heard of this model until a few minutes before I found your video, and you may have just convinced me it’ll be my next instrument… very cool tones from those mini humbuckers!
Thank you man, I’m delighted you liked the vid. Yeah, it’s a lovely instrument, and particularly attractive to look at too.
I may be picking one of these up. I don’t have anything with mini humbuckers...
Hi Gene. Yeah, I definitely notice the more pokey and clear performance when compared to the full fat humbuckers of my Gibsons.
The Epi looks so beauty and sounds 😎 Now I after see the videos I have gas.
Thanks for the good times I enjoy listening your knowledge and play 😎
Thanks jagercaster 👍
Oh,I love its sound and your rendering!I will buy one in summer holiday!Thank you paul!
Thanks, glad you liked it 👍
Thank you Gangnam Style 😊
That is a great demo on that Epi Riviera. Recently acquired a 2011 Cherry ES-335 Custom Pro from the Epiphone custom shop out of China. (There is a very good tour of the factory on TH-cam.) They are 70% hand-crafted and excellent. This model has full Alnico 4 Humbuckers. It is a dream to play and here in Canada I saved $4400 when I purchased this one used with a hardshell case.
Thank you Glory Man. That guitar of yours sounds like a keeper! And a heck of a bargain too. Cheers for watching my wee video.
Thanks Chaz Jr 👍
Really enjoyed your review and presentation style. Nice work!
I also recently got one, Chaz. I am pretty impressed with the stock pickups.
Subscribed!
Thanks Kurt! And cheers for subscribing 🍻
Thanks man, cheers for watching. Good luck with your modding 👍
I love this Epiphone...It s Amazing and your playing Is marvelous.
Cheers man.
Thanks cosimo, appreciated 👍
@@Paulrezzano no problem, I think it’s just the way they are. 👍🏻
Thank you Paul. I always look forward to your great videos and great playing. Keep up the good work
Thanks Frank 😊👍
Your playing is amazing. Always love listening to your stuff!
Thank you so much MostlyPostie 👍. And I’m delighted to hear you enjoy Colin’s channel too (The Guitaristas). I’m really enjoying his back catalogue of vids.
Great playing Paul if i may say, really loved it between 7.00 - 9.00. Love the guitar
Thank you Michelle, I’m delighted you liked my vid, and the guitar 👍
Beautiful guitar, Paul! You can make a cardboard box sound stunning as far as I'm concerned! That guitar definitely gives out Robben Ford vibes!
Ah, thank you Krenar 👍. Maybe I’ll try that 🤣
Fantastic review! Thanks for posting. 👍
Thank you Pete, glad you liked the vid. Cheers 🍻
Vintage Epiphones were were built in the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo! I have a 1966 Epiphone Sorrento... similar, though hollow, also with mini humbuckers, also a quality guitar!
Yeah, you’re a lucky man having a genuine Kalamazoo made guitar. I’d definitely hang on to that one 😊
Another very enjoyable video! Thanks Paul!!
My pleasure, thanks Ivan 👍
Well done Paul ! So nice comping and composition and above all nice comparision with the ES335 ! Very instructive and useful when wondering about buying one ! I already own a Casino epiphone Casino coupe wich amazes me everyday for the price and was wondering about getting a bigger body and humbuckers. Many thanks and cheers from France !
Thanks Stephane! Appreciated 🍻
I am the same I got a 2007 Korean Sheraton at a guitar show and am really impressed with it plus I have gibsons ..great post cheers 👍you are a great player ..
Thank you Judd, cheers 🍻
Thanks damagecontrol60! Appreciated
Robben Ford gigs with a red Riviera just like that...great blues box!
It’s a nice finish for a modern version
Great review, awesome tones. I could stay on that neck pickup for days...but nighttime would come eventually. Tasteful playing, those sweet doublestops are definitely worth throwing a couple pounds your way. Cheers from the US
Thank you ringforthrev 👍. And greetings to you in the US from a breezy Edinburgh Scotland. 🍻
I love the trapeze tailpiece and mini-humbuckers. This is a uniquely Epiphone-looking and sounding guitar. Great chops by the way!
Thank you Guitar Dad! Delighted you liked the vid 😊
I own a Riviera along with a Gibson SG, and it's a really great instrument but your playing is something else.
Thanks man, I’m delighted you like my playing 👍
The cheap guitar market is crazy nowadays. I bought a Harley Benton HB-35Plus Vintage Burst last year for 200 quid that sounds great. A low risk 335. Same theory with buying northern soul reissues for £20 instead of carting the original £1000 records across town at 4 in the morning.
Love the guitaristas - really interesting hearing your thoughts on the Riviera
Thanks Mickertyable 👍
Your playing style is really unique I love it.
Thank you Jaden! And so sorry for such a late acknowledgment…. This one must have escaped me 🤣😊
Sweet chording, lovely touch. You showed the Riviera in its best light. They truly are photogenic instruments. I've been searching for some sort of ES for more than a year. The Riviera looks like a really strong contender, particularly as it comes with the mini buckers. Thanks for nice approach to reviewing.
Thank you Tim! Glad you liked my vid 😊. And yes, I’m really happy with the Riviera
I have a really nice Musoo ES-335 copy that had rough frets like that - just playing with lots of bending for a couple of weeks “polished” them perfectly smooth.
Hi Paul,
Yes, all the glossy hardware. I always take some Scotchbrite pad to it all, and get a very nice satin finish that looks great. Those guitars are fantastic with a unique tone.
Thanks Chuck, and cheers for the Scotchbrite tip 👍
Nice add with this Epi! Some magic with mini humbuckers...I used to busk in the town square in Sante Fe New Mexico..lots of fun, not much $$ though!
Thanks Robert. Haven’t made it to New Mexico yet… maybe one day 🤣.
Thanks David. Delighted you liked my review. 👍
Good review, more significantly.. Great playing!
Thank you kindly sir, I appreciate that!
A fret polish with an 'ink eraser' will clean up that grittiness, polish them up and hey presto! I own a custom shop limited edition dot 335 Epiphone, a black one with Gibson humbuckers (upgraded) - I love it.
Thanks for the tip Michael, appreciated 👍
I bought a Sheraton ii and never looked back. I also have an ol G&L Legacy which is my single coil go to. Love these higher end epis tho. They do great work after a smidge of set up.
Thanks William
Nice playing on the new , great looking Riviera Paul. That should serve you well for busking I should think.
Thanks Chuck. Yes, I can’t wait ‘till Spring time so I can try it out 😊
It’s a very pretty guitar, I know you like relic guitar, but I like pristine so I really dig the new one, to each their own, it sounds beautiful ! Of course the Gibson sounds richer to my ears but E will be great for street play, and you being such a great musician that’s a for sure positive.
Awesome lead phrasing, floored me
Thank you Andrew! Delighted you like my playing. Cheers 🍻
Always a Pleasure wacthing your Video's mate. In the US and guitar stock are getting a bit thin.Great Buy. :-)
Thanks zazoomatt 👍
Great video Paul. I was really impressed with the Epiphone ….. and then you plugged in the Gibson.
No comparison, but it’s a great guitar for busking nevertheless.
Thanks Terry. And I’m secretly delighted you can perceive a difference between the Gibson and the Epiphone 🙏
Nice review and great playing!
Thank you Chad. 👍
Paul, your videos are always outstanding and inspiring! Your playing is superb. In my experience, the Epiphone ES style guitars have always been outstanding instruments…and by all accounts the newer versions are the best yet. Enjoy your Riviera!
Thank you J P 👍. Delighted you like my playing. Cheers J P, and sorry for ridiculously late reply.
Thank you Alex. Your Riviera sounds intriguing… Cheers for watching 😊
Lovely tones from that Epi Paul....I'm not too keen on the white scratch plate....I got a black Gibson copy scratch plate from Amazon for my epi sheraton...just looks like a 335 lol.
Thanks David 😊
Really enjoy your experimenting w the "outside" runs. It is sounding fantastic and I would love to improve that aspect of my playing.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I will be there Paul but getting a quid out of me could be hard! Might treat you for lunch though! 😃
...but heck, the real reason I tune in is to hear your playing and top up me fuel tank
with high octane inspiration (thank you so very much) ...and I know that even
t'were/t'was it genuine junk, I know you'd eek out some sweet tones (!)
& IMHO them mini humbuckers from Epi are so fun and different
Thanks Jonny 🙏. Appreciated
Betiful guitar and nice playing. Very useful video.
Thank you 😊. Cheers
What a fantastic video have a wonderful 2day
Thank you 👍. Delighted you enjoyed the vid. Cheers 🍻
Nice review-and I noticed the pickguard 'E' has done its traditional disappearing act (most of them spontaneously drop off). I'm considering one of these to partner my Masterbilt Texan. Thanks.
Thanks Andrew. Yes, in fact I’ve now removed the whole scratch plate 🤣
Glad you’re pleased with Paul! Makes me not feel so bad about my Epiphone. 😂 No, for what they cost they’re great. Cheers!
Thanks Jeff. I was playing it last night through your JTM SS….. lovely!
You're still the best, Paul.
Thanks Chris. Yes, there’s players out there doing incredible things with loopers. Happy looping Chris 🤘
Lovely sounding guitar and playing
Thanks 🍻
I get how you're not supposed to like the Epiphone, but it sounds great. A good idea for busking, yes! Never foolish buying those vintage guitars, they do appreciate!
Thanks Stuart, I like what you’re saying.👍
Awesome playing, mostly clean with pleasant licks. I could listen for hours. Since I'm a single coil fan, the Epiphone mini humbuckers sound more bright and clearer. I think the riviera has more soul and mojo than the gibson
Thanks Miguel! Glad you liked it 🍻
@@paulstaffordcook8799 , you just made me buy one 😀
Thanks pkflash2004. Delighted you liked my playing. 👍
Thank you Tonetwisters! Glad you like the sound from my Epiphone. In fact, I’ll be uploading an update on that guitar tonight! Cheers
Great review, Thank you.
Thanks Jason 👍
Man....your a tasty player. Excellent phrasing. You give me hope for guitar music. Any chance you have any tutorials on how to use the diminished scales like you do? I still struggle knowing exactly where to throw them in.
Thank you 🙏. Delighted you like my playing. Actually, a few other players have asked about the same thing…. So I’ve got that on my do list of vids to post. Hopefully coming soon 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 You are very welcome. And yes...I'd love to see that video.

Well thank you Dean, cheers mate 👍
I bought this guitar a few weeks ago and felt the same as you. It was almost too good for the price and kind of brought me to a crisis point over the more expensive guitars I have! I had a couple of sharper fret ends and the same fret polish issue you mentioned, nothing else.
Glad you like yours. Yeah, I’m really looking forward to bonding with mine 👍
Came for the review. Stayed for the great playing.
Well thank you Larry! Delighted you stopped by the channel 😊
Great playing Paul, sounds great on the o/d neck pickup…yep I know that feeling when a cheaper guitar sounds as good as a more expensive one. I’ve got an 1987 MIJ Strat and a Custom Shop. Say no more..😉

Beautiful Epiphone, i have and you’ll think I’m crazy for this but i sold my Gibson 335 and Les Paul and bought both more affordable versions, to be transparent I’m a Fender guy but still want the Gibson vibe but without the price tag 🏷 used the cash from my Gibsons to buy more Fenders 😁😁😁
Excellent playing as ever Paul , love your uploads mate.
