It looks like you have lots of suggestions and things to consider, but Math-U-See is such a tried and true program. Even though it’s black and white, the kids LOVE the blocks, the video lessons are so good, and it really makes sure kids have solid understanding.

Don't beat yourself up about this we're only humans. My daughter who struggles with math just completed TG&TB Math3 and by the time we got to the last unit she was ding it independently. We are still going strong and she just started their level 4 and the videos are awesome. As long as your daughter is happy and it works for ya'll, that is all that matters. Split the lessons up in to 2 days as well if a lesson is way to long. I did that plenty of times this pass year. It is so flexible because there are only 120 lessons. Stick with it and you will love it. I also have a daughter who finished level 5 and just started level 6 and I know it is an awesome program.

It's totally fine to piece things together as your family needs! I've spent many seasons of homeschool not completing curriculums because we use a little bit from multiple sources. As long as I see improvement and she has learned something at the end of the year I feel good!

Hey Mama! First of all, your thumbnail! Lol, I love it! So I'm still watching, but for multiplication, my son was still learning too when he was completing level 3 from TGTB... at first, I was like man should he know his concepts ... I actually didn't even do the multiplication facts the way they said for them to memorize it. We just did the work and then sometimes would watch some videos on multiplication or just go over facts that he needed to work on. I feel like sometimes we think our kids need to know everything when they are doing their work or maybe be strong in everything... I honestly trusted the process, and he finished level 3, and he knows his multiplication facts so well, which really helps him with division and order of operations. Also, of course, you know your girl best, so you have to do what's best for you and your girl ❤ all the best mama in your journey!

Totally agree about TGTB math 3. I have a third grader this year as well and we are doing CLE (Christian light). He and my two other school aged kids are doing it and it is cheap, thorough and logical. I think either CLE or math with confidence would be good to try in your situation. Hope you find something that works!

With BJU there are tons of extras for each lesson on the cd in the back of the teachers book. We came from the good and beautiful to BJU and it was like a bomb went off the first couple of weeks. So different. We use the printables when my kiddo needs the “extra work”. I always am second guessing myself with switching from the good and beautiful. I don’t know if BJU is more advanced or less advanced than the good and the beautiful. My daughter struggles a bit with reading so I think that was the main reason I left the good and beautiful. We have used preschool, k primer, level k and level 1. She is technically in third grade but was moving very slow through the good and beautiful.

Maybe go up to the next level of language arts with GATB to avoid the phonics? 🤷🏻‍♀️ In the end, I tend to think sticking to something is ultimately better than constantly jumping. My personal story is after I got the kindergarten curriculum I used with my first child, I flipped through and thought, “He knows this already.” But I stuck with it because I had paid for it. I also became kinda bored with it about half way through. But he loved it and it turns out there were things he actually didn’t know or didn’t know we’ll that I thought he had a firm grasp on. I ended up appreciating that curriculum for giving my son an excellent base. I have since used it with my other children and will be using it for the last time this year with my baby. I have grown more bored with it each time (sometimes to the point of agony…they are all fine with it) but each time it proves my kids don’t know everything I think they know and by the end they are solid on those base concepts. And I don’t think that it’s necessarily just the curriculum. I think it’s more a testament to being consistent. I don’t know your child, family, or situation and I don’t presume to, so I add the following anecdote without judgement. I’m simply providing in case it helps with your decisions in any way. I have taught in a small co-op for years. I know the children and their parents very well. I grew up with most of the parents. Most of the time I see a stark difference between the students who have constantly curriculum hopped through their educational careers or done bits and pieces of curriculum (usually because parents didn’t think they needed to do certain parts or just didn’t want to) and those who were more consistent with their curriculum choices. That isn’t to say that the latter group never changed curriculum; it’s just that they only did so when something truly wasn’t working versus just not enjoying it fully (and changes based only on preference rather than performance usually come with the next school year rather than mid-term). There’s also a lesson there regarding perseverance and dedication, I think, which I also often see correlated in the work ethic of the students. That’s just my perspective. Take it as you will, as I am just a nobody stranger from the Internet whose comments and ideas really mean nothing! Hope you have a great school year!!❤

Wow thanks so much for sharing that with me! I didn’t even really think to move up a level -the phonics is the worst part for us because I think it confuses her since she already can just read the words! I could always try it and see what happens! We have been so consistent with this and she is so dang smart and solid with her foundation as well. So I think this is what’s best for her just annoyed with the phonics lol!!

I so feel your pain!! Math and LA has been such trial and error for us this past year. We started using MWC and it was definitely the best one we've tried so far. My daughter just doesn't like Math in general so I don't think we'll ever find one we absolutely love 😅For LA have you ever heard of Voyages in English? I think it looks super intriguing but its so expensive I can never bring myself to buy it 😂

I'm a 9 year homeschool mom of a current 8th and 10th grader, so I've been where you are. I had to stop math for a bit just to work on skip counting... I went on Teachers Pay Teachers to find skip counting mini posters and skip counting songs, and we worked one by one on them. I never found a math that worked on skip counting before jumping into multiplication... ever! So, it's a learning experience, but at that stage of math, it's okay to stop a book, focus on a concept that's needed, and pick the book back up. I wish someone had told me that. ---> Abeka is written for a classroom. So is BJU Press. Which is why the teacher lesson plans look that way and doesn't make it super homeschool friendly, especially if you haven't homeschooled long. ---> The math that worked for my math struggling student was Christian Light Education. We stuck with it through Math 2-Math 6. I highly recommend it. Keep in mind that sometimes color can be distracting, even though it looks pretty.

I really love kumon workbooks for grade 1-4. It teaches math facts really well. It is drill and kill but it works. I would just go up a level in TGTB if she is advanced reader because they recently downgraded the difficulty in their levels 1-3.

I stopped using BJU English 5 after 7 weeks. I had the teacher guide and things were going well. I taught the lesson, did the guides practice and then had my 2 5th graders do the independent page. Afterwards we would check it together. Things seemed to be going welll.
Until after the writing chapter there was a cumulative review of all the grammar they had learned. They both failed it. It was too much covered with not enough practice.
I switched to Fix It Grammar and IEW Structure and Style. The need mastery. Things are going so much better. Learning about prepositional phrases for one lesson left them so confused. Finding them in a short sentence or two every day has them identifying them so quickly.
I also had purchased BJU Spelling. They are not good spellers and failed almost every test. 🤦🏻‍♀️ They are doing All About Spelling now and doing great.

@@blessedhomeschoolmess I am using their Bible Heroes with my 2nd grader this year. It’s gentle and involves games. It’s a very simple way to introduce IEW. I make a key word outline with her. She dictates the paragraph back using the outline then she copies it onto paper over 3 days. I am saving them to have them bound into a little book for her at the end of the year. IEW’s Path page helped me find it. I then saw great TH-cam reviews.
