Lies of Lock Lamora, Anathem, Assassin's Apprentice, Dragonflight, Inda, Kings of the Wyld, and Red Sister are my usual recommendations for new fantasy. But you can never underestimate the power of classics like The Once and Future King, Redwall, and A Wizard of Earthsea.

Mercedes Lackey was an amazing author in the '90s. She also writes a series of books that are all stand alone and retellings of popular fairytales. Beautiful and the Werewolf was my favorite.

I got into Valdemar/Lackey in college, as she was very hyped in LGBT sci-fi/fantasy circles. In HS I was more into Melanie Rawn, Robert Jordan/Wheel of Time, Terry Brooks (Landover more than Shannara), Tad Williams, and so many others...
I'm not sure when the US/English-language fantasy market started getting so focused on what seems like a fairly narrow list of authors. But maybe it was always thus - my mom went nuts one Christmas trying to track down a copy of David Eddings' Seeress of Kell for me 😍

Ah, Lackey varies in quality across the Valdemar books - some are excellent, some less so, but there's fun stuff for different tastes. I thought Talia was just okay, but it's a good intro to the world. After that folks are pretty free to step into any of the trilogies/standalones. Last Herald-Mage, Mage Winds+Mage Storms, and the duology about the Stablemaster & Warrior/Teacher, I think? Those were the standouts for me 💜

I love her Valdemar books (some more than others - can't get into The Mage Wars trilogy at all) her latest series in the world is pretty good so far. Lackey is an underrated author. Her books are driven as much by character as story. Definitely one of my favorite authors.
She does use some of the miscommunication and characters not talking to each other, but more often in young characters. It is also more often about their relationships than lager happenings. Making it more believable than how some writers used it.

Check out David Eddings for a fun old-school romp. The Belgariad gets a lot of [justified] flack for being too Tolkien-esque and kid-friendly, but his Elenium series (Bk 1: The Diamond Throne) I'd put up at the top of any Best Fantasy of the 80s-00s list. Like most of his work, it rarely takes itself too seriously, and questions some classic tropes while reveling in what makes them perennially appealing.
I couldn't get too deep into Raymond K. Feist myself, beyond Magician / the early books of his Riftwar Saga, but they were very popular and generally leaned more towards an older audience.

Will add a few older recs here:
+ War of the Flowers, Tad Williams - mystery-thriller that posits faerie as a modern place with corporations & political unrest, and a human 22ish young man who gets entangled in their world. Secrets of the past, little bit of horror/suspense, interesting spin on classic fae tropes. He has a lot of good genre-bending work, if that's your thing.
Also great: Otherland, Bobby Dollar angelic detective trilogy, and his Memory, Sorrow & Thorn series.
+ Magister Trilogy, C.S. Friedman - Magic needs lifeforce, so witches die young - except for those with the will to steal others' magic, and so live on forever. Dragonflies the size of dragons, feeding on fear and blocking the sun with their beauty. Characters that are all black & grey morality, in a weirdshit spin on a "save the world" story.
Also great: Her Coldfire trilogy has probably one of the best anti-villains in fantasy, Gerald Tarrant.
+ That Legends & Lattes made me immediately think of the "Chicks in Chainmail" anthologies, edited by Esther Friesner. The series theme was feminist tongue-in-cheek spins on pulp fantasy ideas of women, and it had a lot of good authors in the mix. Friesner's own contributions about an all-female mercenary company were great.
But the break-out was about a warrior single-mom raising her kid in our world, who nabs the middle-school math teacher when they discover that calculus = spellcasting. Stories were so popular that they did a standalone novel, Mathemagics.

Agreed, although tbf the Valdemar books definitely fit that bill. My observation of current SF/Fantasy book-fandom is that since much of it is driven by influencers & author-marketing now, everyone really only knows the new stuff, either the mass-market, or ascended indie darlings.
You will see some smaller communities crop up around particular authors, or themes/worlds, but mostly geeks today don't have that experience of browsing the shelf and seeing old titles alongside newer ones.

The quality of glasses from GlassesUSA is nowhere near the quality that comes from your local optometry office.

Not a fan of Sanderson. Ever hear of a guy named Robert Jordan? He is a much better writer. How about George MacDonald... You guys need to read more classic literature.

You are literally offering the WORST advice on glasses- scanning them with your phone to generate the prescription??? I work in optometry as a practice manager and I am shocked to hear someone offer this kind of advice to their followers. Please get your yearly exam done by an licensed optometrist and glasses made by an experienced optician.

I think BrandoSando is overrated, tbh.

That's valid, not everything is for everyone. Like me personally I struggle to read Mistborn, but I love the Stormlight Archive.
And by struggle I mean it's taken me almost two years to read 1 and a quarter Mistborn novels

That's generally true for the dominant media in any genre. That said, I'm not sure that claiming Sanderson is an extraordinary artist is a common sentiment. He's generally praised for his prose being simple and easy to read, his insane workrate, and his worldbuilding (usually specifically talking about the magic systems).
People like his characters and his plots well enough, but I don't really see people claiming them to be the best they've ever read (at least if they read a lot).
He's a bit like the Marvel movies: wide appeal and a steady stream of (usually) competent stories, but unless they are the only books that someone is reading, they are not likely to be their absolute favourites.
One thing he does serve the community as is a gateway into the wider genre of fantasy.

I don't necessarily need US based glasses ads but well, that's the way things go.
