  • Remastered video of Operation Sailor Hat
    "Operation Sailor Hat" was a series of tests conducted by the United States Navy in 1965 to simulate the effects of nuclear blasts on naval ships without using actual nuclear weapons. These tests used high-explosive charges to generate similar shock waves and pressures.
    Key Details:
    Objective: The primary goal was to understand how ships and their equipment would withstand the shock waves and pressures from a nuclear explosion, thereby improving ship design and survivability.
    Location: The tests took place on Kahoolawe Island, Hawaii.
    Explosives Used: Instead of nuclear devices, the tests utilized large quantities of conventional explosives. Each test used a 500-ton TNT explosive charge.
    Tests: There were three main tests:
    Test Alpha: Conducted on February 6, 1965.
    Test Bravo: Conducted on April 16, 1965.
    Test Charlie: Conducted on June 19, 1965.
    Ships Involved: Various decommissioned ships were used as targets to study the effects, including the USS Atlanta (CL-104), a light cruiser, which was one of the primary test subjects.
    Results: The data collected from these tests provided valuable insights into the structural integrity and resilience of naval vessels, leading to advancements in ship design and improved safety measures for naval operations.
    "Operation Sailor Hat" is notable for its role in enhancing the understanding of the impact of explosive forces on naval ships, contributing to advancements in military engineering and ship design.

      Sailors hat crater.
      The pool at the bottom of the crater meets the criteria of an anchialine pond because it shows tidal fluctuation, has measurable salinity, and lacks surface connections to the sea. The water chemistry of this pool is similar to the ocean except silica is elevated and salinity is slightly depressed suggesting a small groundwater influence. The fauna is dominated by waterboatmen, an endemic shrimp and tubeworm, polychaetes, amphipods, an ostracod, gastropod, solitary ectoproct. anemone, flatworm and sponge. The atyid shrimp, Halocaridina rubra, is a characteristic species of Hawaiian anchialine systems and probably colonized this pool by active migration via the watertable. Colonization by the remaining fauna may have occurred by storm surf (for marine species) or with the wind.

      @@josephastier7421 The blast wave goes subsonic rather quick and this can be ignored for a rough estimate of distance. If it makes you feel better, consider this a lower bound on stand-off distance here.

  • @jayg339
    @jayg339 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Fooled me at first thinking it was a mini-nuke. They should've used something like this for the movie Oppenheimer instead of lighting some gas on fire - would've looked significantly better than the end result.
    A nuclear blast should not be that difficult to create/computer generate/film in the year 2024, but sure enough, most nuclear explosions in movies rarely look like the actual thing.
