The lyrics were an attack on Jerry Brown, who was State Governor of California. Brown had some pseudo-hippy trappings and one of his nicknames was "Governor Moonbeam". That's why the song refers to kids being made to meditate in school and the suede-denim secret police. Lex was right that the song was referring to how power can change and corrupt people, even politicians who initially appear harmless. Most punks hated the hippies, believing that they were too passive and reluctant to really fight for real change.

I often felt that Jello could have reprised CUA according to who was in office at the time. I wrote tribute lyrics years ago during Dubya's administration titled Crawford Texas, Uber Alles that were pretty good, fitting both the tempo of original lyrics, and being politically accurate, and even managed to make them rhyme. I've been working on Trump Tower, Uber Alles, but it doesn't flow as well as Crawford Texas, which has the same syllable count as California, although there's a LOT more material to work with.

I prefer the version on the album. Jerry Brown was the left-leaning governor of California when this came out -- the first of two tenures, a generation apart, and his dad was governor before him --and he was my mayor when I lived in Oakland around the turn of the century. Everyone thinks of San Francisco and Berkeley and Marin County when they think of Bay Area liberalism, but Oakland's further left than everywhere else, and there was a huge movement against Brown because of his "conservative" pro-business leanings.
The Dead Kennedys (from SF; Jello Biafra ran for mayor!) parodied the left and the right. Check out "Kill the Poor," "Stealing People's Mail," "Police Truck" and "Drug Me."

Hey there. Really glad you enjoyed this. This was a huge track for me as a pre-teen. Both as musical and political content. The older I get the more I realise that Jello Biafra's worldview is absolutely spot on. It felt like it then and life has confirmed this. I feel there are 4 or 5 DK songs that could be used as the national anthem of most countries, obviously the US and UK mostly, Kill The Poor, Chemical Warfare, Bleed For Me, California Uber Alles and Holiday In Cambodia. With Nazi Punks Fuck Off thrown in for good measure. Best wishes.

Fun fact: "California Uber Alles" is very similar to "Deutschland über alles", which is the first part of the Deutschlandlied, which was the national anthem of Germany under Nazi rule.
It keeps a very strong Nazi vibe to that day and is used very rarely.

I have to agree with the other commentors that lyrics are a must. I've been listening to DK for 40yrs so I get it. Jello can rip through 5 verses and 4 choruses in under a minute. You may even find it hard to read as fast as he sings.

California Uber Alles is taken from a song called Deutschland Uber Alles which is basically Germany above all. Jello is basically mocking Jerry Brown and California even more.

If you don't know, the German National Anthem is called Deutschland Uber Alles ( has an umlaut, which I am too lazy to figure out how to reproduce). The original is very militant and was embraced by WWII Germany. The modern version has half of the verses cut out to tone it down.

This song is about the authoritarian impulse in American liberalism, but they've adapted the lyrics over the years to target figures on the Left and the Right. Basically government saying that they know what's best for people. California fascism will have cool clothes and healthy living, but it's still fascism.
