When I hear the original version, which isn't often (unfortunately) I almost tear up, because it is a time machine that transports me back to my late teen years, when everything was possible. A song that holds very special meaning to me.
The Roots are the house band on Jimmy Fallon's show. Often they play with artists who are either solo are not there with a band. I'm not too fond of Mark's vocal here, but you can tell the acoustics and sound mixing are getting the better of him. Great backing from the Roots though. Sounds just like the record.
I've had enough of these brutal beatings and name callings....I love these lyrics the attention I need is much more serious I love Mark! and I love how Quest Love and the whole crew are so eccentric they add a nice little touch to this classic!👍
Love this version, I Wish there was an official version uploaded, in good quality. But I like that, this uploader, decided to upload it. I Really like that everything is more stronger and sharper.
watched Fallon here on the East Coast, saw "Moderately Talented" and then the show cut off, went to a short break, and Carson Daly came on. Never saw "Mistress" at all until today. Anyone else experience this? Regardless, loved "Moderately Talented" and, just as an old man would still think to do, I rushed to tape it on my VCR, hoping to show my kids when they awoke this morning. How funny is that? Somehow, forgot about the tech reality that is youtube. Eventually, I'll figure it all out.
I too did not see the rock band version of Mistress? Neither on Late Night with Jimmy,or at the Mark Kozelek show I attended. I think the set was Among the Leaves heavy for promotion of his new LP which was tipped up on the late night desk, but not available to the rest of us rock hounds yet. Snatched up some Sun Kil Moon/ Mark Kozelek rarities at the Lincoln Hall Chicago show for $10 a piece. Lost Verses live CD, Find Me Ruben Olivares CD, Little Drummer Boy 2XCD set, and the Nights LP CD
This is lovely, but I think they could've picked a different song from the back catalogue to better showcase Mark's voice. Its chamged a lot since he recorded Mistress. I would have melted for GCP.
This performance breaks my heart. Questlove and the supporting band play through the motions. I feel Mark had a chance to introduce something great......super sad.....squandered moment. So many MK, RHP, SKM fans here.....
@rfporter3, it turns out that "Mistress" was only played as a web exclusive that night. I t didn't make it to TV anywhere. I read on Fallon's site that another "surprise" is coming soon, another song played backstage that was recorded and soon to be released on the web. Saw Mark K. last week in Philly. Not his best performance...he hadn't slept in 5 or 6 nights, he told us, and he seemed a bit tired to give us his best vocals. It was still great, however, how couldn't it be?
I personally prefer the "piano version" of this song. But this could not have been more perfect. The Roots played it better than Red House Painters. This is such a great example of how Mark's songs are truly timeless. But he's also, one of the few, that has gotten better as he's gotten older.
Does anyone know the backstory to this? ie. why are they playing together? Are the Roots fans of MK and wanted to play with him or were they pushed into it by someone? What a bizarre match up - I love them both but never in a million years imagined them playing together - I am stunned! Also, is there any video online of the Moderately Talented Young Woman from this set?
This is very good, I'd like to hear MK play live w/band, has more potential in a live experience w/band in my opinion. I like his acoustic songs best, however, it fits more in the mood for something you listen to alone, for me. Either way he is an outstanding singer and song writer, so the music is always going to be good, my favorite bar none.
same with me on the setlist although my complaint was the number of songs from absolutely nowhere. Five that were from out of left field, not from RHP, not from Ghosts, April or AFP or ATL. Two songs from AFP just a year and half after its release was kind of goofy. AFP is a masterpiece. Same with April and Ghosts and I love ATL, too, but 9 were from there and 1, 2 or 3 from each of the rest.
Very nice. I love it. Much better than the acoustic "The Moderately Talented..." that also appeared on this telecast. Wish he'd do more electric music (and with a band). The Roots added so much.
The light color in the room The sunshine seeping in Doesn't mix with the black of Death's angel looming in I've had enough of the Brutal beatings and name callings To lose me to this bed Bruised internally, eternally Your praise little gifts you spent your money And stuffed me with Didn't amount to anything The attention I need is much more serious A kind of weight you couldn't lift Even if your cheap career depended on it I need someone much more mysterious To be my, to be my miss To be my mistress To be my, to be my miss To be my mistress To be my, to be my miss To be my mistress To be my, to be my miss To be my mistress
Ok thanks. I think I read somewhere that Jimmy Fallon was in Almost Famous with Mark, so I guess thats how he wound up on the show. Its a good performance but the lead guitar seems a bit patchy at times. Shame there's no video of Moderately Talented Young Woman online anymore, would love to see that.
***** Cool. It is not easy to replicate the subtly of the original recordings. I thought they did a good job because it would have been real easy for this to sound like ass. ?usetlove is an amazing drummer and I am glad he did his homework.
+Josue De La Torre yes, lets just be friends, who needs friends, just enjoy the music, forget the bitterness, too many bitter people, I thought you were here to listen to Kozelek, leave it at that, enjoy, goodbye, have a good life, don't be bitter to strangers, they may dig you out of the sand one day, Sláinte
Dammit Mark, just tour with a full band again. Such a tease.
The Root House Painters?
Was about to try... but I can't top that.
You win the internet, today👏👏👏
The roof hound papers?
I heard this song when it first came out and I've never gotten over it, really. Astounding.
When I hear the original version, which isn't often (unfortunately) I almost tear up, because it is a time machine that transports me back to my late teen years, when everything was possible. A song that holds very special meaning to me.
Right there with you.
Love the ending.
Mark: Will you tour with me?
Kirk: What?
Is that what he said? lol, I cant' lip read!
did Kirk eventually accept the offer?
I asked him he said yes.
Kool with a capital K. Mr. Kozelek, I could listen to you for the next 100 years. Timeless.
Kirk really killed this one!! Mistress easily has to be my favorite song out there!
What a song for the ages. Amazing remdition.
The Roots are dreamgazing!
I've had enough of these brutal beatings and name callings....I love these lyrics the attention I need is much more serious
I love Mark! and I love how Quest Love and the whole crew are so eccentric they add a nice little touch to this classic!👍
This is giving me chills.
can't believe I've not seen this. sublime! kirk nailed it and the roots too, keeping with the original vibe.
Best song of the 90's.
Mark Kozelek-one of my favorites for many years. Love the musicians!
this is absolutely outstanding..................
Gotta hand it to Jimmy, had hella great music on.
Mark, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc💎
i agree, people give fallon a lot of shit but his music choices and impressions are pretty good
@@electriczoo5310 , Exactly. Jimmy is a vaudevillian skit man. If you want masterfully paced interviews, there's always Johnny👌
i do love the dream pop version of mistress, it's really beautiful to listen too
è quasi misticismo...è stupenda. Adoro!!!
saw mark last night playing in london. love or hate him, he's about as genuine a person as they come.
So cool to see Mark on late night tv! Ohio loves you.
Wow! This crushes any RHP version I've heard. So raw, so beautiful...
WOW. Never knew this happened!
One of my favourite songs from The Red House Painters! Love it... thank you
OH MY KOZALEK!!!!
Love this version, I Wish there was an official version uploaded, in good quality. But I like that, this uploader, decided to upload it. I Really like that everything is more stronger and sharper.
Tremendous but I like it even better with the fuzzy distortion like on the record.
Totally. This are a nice version. But album version is perfect!
the dreamp pop gaze song its memorable...piano too but in minor scale
This are one of Kozelek favorite songs...He play it so much...are my favorite song too

Simple this Song makes me always happy......
damn it this is fantastic. Ive been getting bored of the fingerpicking SKM albums. These could be the new RHP MAKE IT HAPPEN KOZELEK!
My favorite alltimes song (RHP version)
I haven't seen him plugged in since he played with Retribution Gospel Choir! This is golden. Can't believe it took me six months to find it.
Amazing. Mark Kozelek, you are my idol.
always loved this man since I heard "all mixed up" Excess Baggage...
Music is magic
This is lovely, but I think they could've picked a different song from the back catalogue to better showcase Mark's voice. Its chamged a lot since he recorded Mistress. I would have melted for GCP.
I've always loved how Mark goes down in pitch for ''to be my mistress'' here as opposed to up like in the RHP album. Hits harder somehow.
Fucking quest love playing this song this is insane and so good
Thank you again. Always satisfying.
this song ...gives me SHIVERSSSSSS!
This performance breaks my heart. Questlove and the supporting band play through the motions. I feel Mark had a chance to introduce something great......super sad.....squandered moment. So many MK, RHP, SKM fans here.....
Best live ever

William Black hej hahaha you are funny... better thsn red house painters version? you are funny

WHOA!! YES! FINALLY......SOMETHING REAL. ETERNALLY!!! NOTHING. MUCH MORE SERIOUS...........Ya we can....COOL. BRAVE!!
this episode made you cry
hello mpr this is pete. i agree
Was gud my bro
I have a dream, that black guys and white guys, will play white dude music, together...
so spot on ahaha
Please stop thinking in black and white.....Think in human..... colour does't matter....
I know that you’re joking, but you’d be surprised by how many “non-whites” enjoy this kind of music.
Mark's practically makes blues music, lol
Ik youre joking but Marks music is steeped in blues tradition
Mark Kozelek and The Roots
I love him. That’s all 🤗 I need a guy like him in my life
great song

lovequest is in da house
Indeed but these sounds great too, they fit the song well :)
20 years later and still blissed out by this classic fuzz bomb. Awesome
TOTALLY RAD! MUCH, MUCH....LOVE
BRAVE
DUDES....THIS IS BIG. MORE THAN YOU KNOW...
same with me on the setlist although my complaint was the number of songs from absolutely nowhere. Five that were from out of left field, not from RHP, not from Ghosts, April or AFP or ATL.

I was thinking the same thing.
Very nice. I love it. Much better than the acoustic "The Moderately Talented..." that also appeared on this telecast. Wish he'd do more electric music (and with a band). The Roots added so much.
A flawed, troubled musical genius. Red House Painters will always be my favorite band.
Questlove is in the House?
You know, it looks like he just might be in the house.
Sunshine seeping in 👌
The light color in the room
The sunshine seeping in
Doesn't mix with the black of
Death's angel looming in
I've had enough of the
Brutal beatings and name callings
To lose me to this bed
Bruised internally, eternally
Your praise little gifts you spent your money
And stuffed me with
Didn't amount to anything
The attention I need is much more serious
A kind of weight you couldn't lift
Even if your cheap career depended on it
I need someone much more mysterious
To be my, to be my miss
To be my mistress
To be my, to be my miss
To be my mistress
To be my, to be my miss
To be my mistress
To be my, to be my miss
To be my mistress
Rispetto grande sei un Leonardo da Vinci musicale ciao Pino e margherita
Hey, there ! Here is a cover of this wonderful song. Enjoy ! fastfriendsparis.bandcamp.com/track/mistress
SHREDDING!
...EVEN IF YOUR CHEAP CAREERS DEPENDED ON IT.....AND THEY DO
Go on Koz!
beautifully undersung
Mistress
Lol this is fucking awesome the roots
Can anyone tell me the tuning for this song?
great sound thought it was Lou reed at first wicked
Just like the piano version if you consider the lyrics :)
when was this ?
They need to make an album together asap.🙏
I experienced the same thing in Virginia. Missed the best song as well.
Sun Kiladelphonics
Looking forward to the backstage surprise. I just saw him in DC. Good show but the playlist was too ATL-heavy for me.
Sounds like they just didn't bother doing a good sound check. Turn his mike up a little bit. It's all uneven.
look everyone, it's channing tatum kozelek
Fallon's band may be better than the original line up. Excellent!
lmao honestly... i mean ?usetlove is one of the greatest drummers of all time
***** Have you ever heard the original recording?
hahah of course!! rollercoaster is one of my favourite lps, old ramon is my favourite rhp record tho
***** Cool. It is not easy to replicate the subtly of the original recordings. I thought they did a good job because it would have been real easy for this to sound like ass.
?usetlove is an amazing drummer and I am glad he did his homework.
Jim Walker hej come on original version of this song (RHP) is perfect, this is a descent version
SHIT! :D
what kind of alternate universe did i wake up in.
Mark frickin Rocks (apologies for the foul language)
+Josue De La Torre it was irony - lighten up dude :)
oh it's the kind of joke that doesn't look like a joke
+Josue De La Torre yes, lets just be friends, who needs friends, just enjoy the music, forget the bitterness, too many bitter people, I thought you were here to listen to Kozelek, leave it at that, enjoy, goodbye, have a good life, don't be bitter to strangers, they may dig you out of the sand one day, Sláinte
+ScaleReality lol
The emotional provoker
Amazing. I cried.
That is beyond art.......potental/kinetic socio-art energy.
And...they get laid! =)
or I hope they do.
I am not agree... Version by Red house painters lineup is perfect...but, yeah this is descent.
is it just me or is the audio quality bad?
sounds good to me but the video quality is bad
it's tv baby
Is he yelling at the guitar player at the end?
"Igualita" que cualquiera de las del tostón Benji...
?uestlove doesnt do the snare roll :(
Høres ut som han synger gjennom navlen-
I don't feel like the roots were vibing with Mark that much lol - I love his music but I could imagine him being well difficult to work with
yeah, got bored with these picked songs
