Waiting until a product is completely used up before buying a replacement has made my bathroom feel much more like a spa and less like a cluttered mess. Thank you, Hannah! Thank TFD for having Hannah on your channel.
Also, buying travel size products for things that go bad quickly or you don't tend to go through very often makes more sense even if it costs more per ouce. That took me a while to rationalize, but if I don't wear mascara everyday and it should be replaced every 3 months due to bacteria build up, then buying less at a higher cost per ounce costs less and leads to less waste in the long run.
As an esthetician and budget queen, I love HLP’s approach to spending. A strict financial planner would question every beauty expense. HLP’s way is more of a “I know beauty items can bring joy, but how can I be more conscious about these purchases?” Which resonates with me and seems more attainable to a fellow beauty lover.
Funny how the categories of things women typically spend money on become “unnecessary purchases” to financial planners but the things men like to spend money on are somehow major financial investments that you should be budgeting for
I really appreciate these videos that go beyond “just don’t buy it,” since for some of us, we have a sincere desire for all the beautiful things, despite common sense. This video really gets behind some common misconceptions and how misguided they are, and you know what? I’m here for it.
The fact that these tips hit some nerves is revealing. It’s taken me so long to give up the idea of sales saving me money. Having someone come into the beauty space and challenge these assumptions means so much to me. And for those who this doesn’t resonate, know that this message is extremely rare and that many, many of us need to hear it. Like finding an oasis in the desert!
I used to buy backups of everything. But I stopped doing that and the BB cream I liked was discontinued. Guess what happened? Nothing. Absolutely no disaster befell me or my skin. I stopped using it. In fact I haven't found a replacement yet and life still goes on. 🙃
Love this because it's gets at the heart of what capitalism demands from women in particular - to constantly need to try to find a 'holy grail' product that will make us somehow more beautiful/conform to beauty standards. So while it is financial advice it is also advice for how we can subvert societal expectations thrust upon us
Not really. It depends on what she means by back-ups. I tend to buy when things are on sale, but I do this rarely. I have foundation and mix it with moisturiser it spreads easily and doesn't go on too thickly. I have 2 shades that I mix together if my skin is darkening in summer or lightening in winter. That's 2 bottles only to get different shades. As backup I buy more moisturiser but I never have more than 2, one being used one as backup. That's it. I just hate running out of something. but Holy Grail? Seriously no! Just sometimes I forget to expoliate and I don't have a lot of backups, only one being used, one backup only. If what I used doesn't go on sale, I may try something new.
Yes! The only holy grail which has been useful to me is picking one (or two during seasonal changes) products which address my acne. This works well for me, so I don't need special soaps or many additives, and I can keep a simpler wash > tone > sunscreen routine. ETA: And I don't experiment with skincare anymore. What I have now works pretty dang well, so I don't try new things just for the heck unless something has really gone different with my skin (ex. New allergy).
Seems like quite a few people in the comments have had life long perfect spending habits 😒🙄 Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your journey so that others may learn! Your “fewer, nicer things” quote has been my mantra over the last few years and it has completely changed my life. Not just applied to things, but people I give my energy to, and experiences as well!
100% agree fewer nicer things….loving what you already own…love HLP and thank you for adding it applies to other things/people that do not serve a purpose in your ‘mind palace’ ❤️
I think we each spend money chaotically differently. While I would never have more than one cleanser, the other things I waste money on make no sense. It’s easy to see someone else’s error but not your own.
Oh really? Why not accept that some of us just don't have an issue. It might sound like bragging to you but I was relieved and happy to share it. Why be so competitive about this? I don't want to have a channel.
I'm in my early 40s and have had terrible money habits so I appreciate all of the advice! I'm trying to get out of debt and also trying to build a retirement so it's important that I change and get good advice but also not feel badly about myself...progress not perfection
I loved the quote "use it up wear it out make it do or do without". So much so that is now on my lock screen❤️ thank you for keeping me inspired to grow and learn healthier habbits for myself not only spending-wise but also how I view my own collection of beautiful things and using them and enjoying that process.
HLP has single handedly changed my spending habits…she inspired me to try a no buy August… I’m two days away from completing ! Am absolutely committed to loving what I already own and finish what I have first before buying yet another product that is pretty much the same, I was always on the ‘hunt’ for something better…thanks to HLP I now only buy a new item when what I have been using is done with ❤️❤️❤️ buying to use and not to try hits home for me
Way to go! Mine was “no spend November” last year and I probably will try again this year! I love doing mine right before I travel the most for the holidays.
I stopped watching her channel a a few years ago as she seemed to be getting more into makeup she was sent and started to take a more pretentious tone. Has her content gotten back to the more chill, less consumption sort? I loved her content for years!
Definitely fell into the "backup-trap" lots of times in the past. Most times I really underestimate how long it takes to finish a product and end up "storing" numerous unopened things for an enternity - more often than not losing interest in them in the process of using up their predecessor. Sometimes I even repurchase things I'll likely never empty in the first place like eyeshadow because I love it in the moment and it is advertised as limited... I have some true and trusted things I bought for so long and know they are my "holy grails" - and those I sometimes purchase in bulk or use sals to build a (small) backup if necessary. If I love a new product; I put it into my phone in a list and revisit it after some time ; like a wishlist; but in a "buy again because it is good"-way. And it is alarming with how much things I quickly fell out of love after some time or just grew bored of.
Gotta say that backups don't make sense for makeup but it makes sense for skincare because skincare is wayyyy easier/faster to finish than makeup. If anything, buying multiple backups help me resist temptation to buy because I know I already have what I need and love
Yes! So true. My replacement for backups is when it's 75% done or a bit more I start looking for the same thing on sale. But my skincare routine doesn't change year to year at this point.
I have never regretted buying a backup. If you like something, or its a basic necessity, I think backups make sense. I always have 2 or 3 of my fav lipsticks and eyeliner because I go through them. Granted my backups cost $6-$12. These are items I know I like, and I'm not going to not need/change my mind about. 😂Of course if you're spending $50 on a lipstick like HLP it doesn't feel like a good choice financially to buy multiple of the same item. I like her makeup style, but everything she uses is like $50-$80+ so her advice doesn't always feel relatable to me. I don't think most people are dying to try the newest formula of a cleanser or tossing aside $30 tube of barely used cleanser or spending $50 on an experimental piece of makeup, thats obviously a huge waste of money. I better LOVE it, and it be a holy grail item if its $50. Who is throwing around that kind of money experimenting? I can't relate to this advice, although it makes sense if you have elitist spending habits. She has a problem with spending and is in denial but giving people advice.
I think that it depends on what you are buying and how often you use them up. I buy backups of certain items on sale because I have 2 teen boys who go through body wash and shampoo at an alarming rate.
It's okay for frozen, dry or canned food! But very good and successful beauty products stay on the shelves for years. And brands always optimize their products so there will always be something new that will replace something fashionable. Like all the actives, first it was everything hyloronic acid, than vitamin c, than good old Q10 and onand on. No need to worry! I stock up on single use things like eye pad masks, but I use them at least twice a week and that ensures me I don't have to go to often to the drugstore.
If you use them up often, you would be saving money in the long run. I will buy back ups of brow products, UD setting spray, and mascara. Outside of that, I don’t really buy back ups.
I love this! So many women and beauty lovers experience the kind of compulsion Hannah talks about here, due in no small part I'm sure to the rise of social media marketing. When you live in a world that is constantly telling you that it's your duty to make yourself look the best you possibly can, it can be difficult to resist the urge to buy all manner of product that promise to help you in that endeavor. I appreciate that Hannah breaks down the traps of these beyond just "Love yourself" and "You're beautiful the way you are". Those messages are important, obviously, but marketing and social pressure (from influencers, brands, and other social media users) causes real financial harm also, and I think that talking about that on this channel, which is geared toward women's financial literacy and skill, is hugely beneficial. Thanks Hannah, and the whole TFD team!
Yeah I nearly got sucked into the eyebrow thing. Microblading. But I looked into it more closely and I though what the heck? $750 for 2 eyebrows and THEN you pay to maintain them? Then I looked at henna options. Then I just got an old kit out and did it myself. Looks great! Saved nearly $750. I nearly got sucked into the fake eyelash thing, the eyelash extensions. Then I realised the cost is ridiculous plus the things fall out and need maintenance. It's ludicrous. Then I researched doing your own glued on versions, then I just gave up before even starting! I just use old fashioned mascara as needed but always always remove it before bed. More savings. Although I use it so little it ends up drying out before being fully used. Then I did actually manage to get sucked into having my nails done with gel. Had the nails trimmed and the colours really last. I'm not interested in really edgy stuff. I got them shorter and in neutral colours. They look good but more importantly I'm not flashing talons either and needing staff to help me navigate ordinary living. I have certain eyemakeup colour palettes in 2 kits. No more. Money saved is ridiculous. I've been mulling over clothes for interviews, and then I recalled I have a wool boucle suit, dragged it out, unfortunately some food stains on it, but still looks good. Brushed it down a lot of stains were removed by this method. What I DID buy is some earrings. On sale. I need some which are not too big not too small. These are lovely and will work with the suit. $45USD plus $15 freight costs. I will have the suit dry cleaned and go to experts. It should be fine. I can't keep up with all the gimmicks and breakthroughs and don't even try but keep up with some of the current zeitgeist I guess.... The most important things you can do for your skin 1. hydrate internally. Just drink water! too easy! Maybe have some limited salt, aids with water retention. 2. get enough sleep 3. exfoliate sensibly and only reasonably regularly 4. use sunscreen religiously and top up during the day 5. make sure you're matching your skin undertones with colours that already work for you. 6. don't rub your eyes, wash your hands before touching them. 7. don't share makeup with anyone else for hygiene reasons 8. wash your brushes 9. don't apply too much foundation, mix it with moisturiser before putting it on 10. shower after cleansing but before putting makeup on 11. avoid junk food, smoking and alcohol.
Starting a no buy year here! Working on being debt free, and working through my sewing stash! Because I can actually make it if I want it bad enough, and I already have everything for it. Glad I'm not the only one going through these feelings and so thankful you explored it already and help empower people to go for it!
LOVE that Hannah is doing work for this channel! She's changed my spending habits and improved my wellbeing. One of life's good eggs and brilliant financial / spending advice.
Your point about functional dupes is very insightful. It seems I knew this intuitively but hearing you articulate it that way makes it resonate more and I think I'll be able to consciously consider this the next time I'm tempted to buy a functional dupe. Buying more of the same thing I already know I love is always so tempting!
I know that feeling. "This fits perfect and looks so good!" But you know what? Zhere will always be something new in the future that you will like too. And high quality clothes can last forever if you treat them good, and repairing is of course an act of love!
Agreed! The incredible way Hannah articulates ideas is so helpful and one of the most positive things I gain from watching her channel! Something that immediately sprung to mind regarding Functional Dupes is the newly released ELF Halo glow product (which is all over youtube being touted as a Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter dupe), and I had to remind myself that I already own these types of products and cannot use or don't need ANOTHER product/dupe of this genre.
Love Hannah. I absolutely buy way less now, and am committed to using up what I have before I spend my hard earned dollars on stuff to sit in my closet. We need to constantly hear this message as the push from ads is so constant and powerful, we need lots of reinforcement to withstand the buy buy marketing. Stand strong!
Wow no one has ever been so helpful in helping me unpack the nuances of my shopping compulsion like HLP! The functional dupes thing is so something that I do but would have never been able to articulate it. Keep these coming!
HLP has literally changed my relationship with beauty! Love to see her sharing her message with a broader audience and outlining how her takeaways are applicable for other types of spending 💕
Have been watching hannah for years and her content has made me rethink how I buy stuff especially in my makeup and skincare areas. I have stopped buying back ups and the duping things I already have was something I was guilty of. Her tips are so helpful and my storage and wallet thank her
I really resonated with a lot of the points Hannah brought up. Although some of these are my old spending habits and I've gotten out of them, it's a good reminder of how they are psychological habits that we need to break. Although most of her content was about beauty products these could easily be applied to any other type of consumer product
This hit home! I am definitely restless when it comes to certain products. I have so many half empty bottles of hair creme, gels, conditioners, and oils ☹ I recently decided to stop "trying" tons of products. I have a specific brand of mousse and gel that I know work, so no need to buy 3 other fancy new styling products every month . And the concept of an A-list item is super helpful. I will keep that in mind for sure!
My Mum was a child in WW2 England. She had me late in life, but the effect of living with rations etc never left her and I grew up hearing “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” I’m in my 40’s and after some poor financial choices in my years, I’m back to that mantra. Loved hearing it in this video!
Super guilty of the first 2. I'd also add in a kind of similar vein to number 3- buying dupes/cheaper versions/"good enough for now" versions of the products I want instead of just waiting for or saving up for what I actually want only to be disappointed by the "dupe" and still longing for what I wanted in the first place.
Love this video! I love how practical and grounded Hannah's advice is while still being rooted in something that is actually pretty philosophical and deep. Her videos make me love the internet again because I feel like I'm experiencing something more than just entertainment, but actually learning and growing and exploring.
I do all these but my journey was so different. I was tired of all the clutter and had a serious clear out. Then I found that I automatically started to become a lot more thoughtful about what I buy because I don't want my flat to get cluttered again and I'm really seeing the financial benefit!
When all the battle of the sunscreens content was going around I learned my lesson justifying getting backups.. Im proud of following through on my one in and one out rule after recently selling jeans I outgrew and purchasing a bigger size second hand! Also I found committing to products easier buying mini sizes (not only for travel) and not having leftover product like some full size products by the expiration date!
For the back-ups, I think you really need to know yourself and your habits. I found my perfect powder and haven't changed it in years, so it makes sense for me to have another one on hand. However my husband likes a particular deodorant that isn't at our local drugstore, so when I'm ordering online he'll sometimes have me get two. Then he'll use up one and tell me he's out and to order more. Now we have 6 deodorants under our sink.
The Perfect One is something else than a cleanser that will be replaced by the brand because they throw in new actives. Which they do every three months. To keep people buying. And I don't think powder can go stale. Manhattan has the same items like in the 90s when I started wearing Make Up. Continuity in things like colours for foundation and powders is important in my opinion. My favourite foundation got thrown out and now I endet up mixing two shades to replicate the PERFECT MATCHING nuance. Hrmpf! 😤
Always talk about my body wash and toothpaste because their things that I can get relatively cheap when I buy in bulk including like couponing and cashback on them. So they make sense for me to have back ups of them. So then I don’t have to buy toothpaste or body wash for the next six months which in the long run saves me more money. The less I’m in the store the less money I spend
Love this! Hannah has such a beautiful way of speaking. Her channel has helped me reevaluate how I look at beauty, food, money and the money spent on them.
I just threw away a backup cleanser that I bought because it was on sale, and I never got to use because it expired. Definitley not doing the backup technique again. I have definitely spend too much doing this when my products end up expiring
Yes! I had thrown away a hair product for the same reason. So upsetting. Products expire and are not worth taking up space if your not even going to enjoy them
If you have an unopened backup, that can sit on a shelf for three years. Provided you can check for the manufacture date and there are apps for that. From someone who worked in the beauty industry. The exp. date on the product is after it's open.
I recently bought a back-up because I’m darker skinned. It’s true that if you’re lighter skinned that there’s always gonna be another product but the product I bought was the only affordable product that worked with my skintone and now it’s discontinued so once the backup is done I’m out of luck
To me, this overlaps with grocery/household buys. I used to grocery shop multiple times oer week, I am a culinary grad lol, and beore I knew it everything was piling up and going bad, and after I bought it I may not use all of the food. Bulk buying groceries is not realistic when you are a college student only feeding yourself, the 25 lb bag of flour does not really save you money🤦♀️
This year I’ve been working really hard to curate a very simple skincare routine wherein I have generally ONE product per step (one liquid exfoliant instead of multiple; one sunscreen instead of multiple) and buy only to replace. As part of this initiative I’ve been working through my backups of skincare and when I tell you my backup stash has lasted almost all year long…! Often when buying things we forget how much longevity products actually have. When we buy something once we’re committing ourselves to months of owning a thing perhaps before we even use it. It’s silly in retrospect.
I like that she centered this video around themes/categories of products. I do struggle with the functional dupes category, I even have a hard time identifying what is a functional dupe! Thats going to be something I will try to cultivate within my approach towards shopping.
My favorite part was the value added to existing possessions when you stop accumulating things. Sad we need a video about not wasting money, but we do and this is good. Thanks
I like using a mantra: "I'm satisfied". Except I forget to use it, but when I've caught myself getting sucked in, using it helps, as does the shares that are in here and the principles being discussed. it's a community
I feel like people here in the comments are intentionally overlooking themes, behaviors, etc that can be applied to anything at all and writing off all of the basic advice because they don’t care about makeup or whatever lol This is all excellent advice across the board simply to stop impulse buying.
I fell into that trap during the pandemic, specifically with skincare. Fortunately I twigged what was going on and am now using all the stuff I stocked up on (not St the same time! Lol)
Thanks for the thoughtful content hannah!! It makes me a bit sad how judgmental some if these comments come across though, I suffer from over buying even when I don’t have the money to do so, tons of people do and go into debt before they get help or realize the problem.. meep just small food for thought
I once read that Tina Turner bought a lifetime supply of her favourite lipstick because her trademark shade was being discontinued. Now THAT'S a backup.
OMG I love seeing Hannah in your channel! Not sure if this is the first one, but I'm excited to see more. I have done no-buy years of some stuff not whole categories. For example last year I did "No Makeup brushes" purchase for a year. I did it because I was finding my self buying way too many so it was a way to slow myself down. And it's been, this year I have not even thought of buying some, because I enjoy the ones I already own.
I am loving this collab! HPL has been such a refreshing antidote from the other beauty related content available on TH-cam. After reading some of the negative comments I feel compelled to say that her videos have single handily changed my relationship to spending (yes-on clothing and makeup, but also more generally) and I am so happy that she chooses to share her journey with us and make calm, thoughtful, anti-mindless consumerism content. For people who feel this doesn’t apply to them, good for you, but not every piece of content needs to be created to appeal to everybody!
This is such an intelligent, nuanced take versus just naming categories / items where you try to limit yourself. All the elements you covered are very familiar to me and it’s given me something to think about!
This made me remember to only buy new polishes once I’ve actually tried all the ones I have at least once. I organized my polishes the other day and literally had forgotten about some amazing polishes.
I love this. I also can't buy products when I'm still going through the same type already. I want to use the new one right away and end up wasting the old one. I don't throw the old one out but use more product than normal just to get through it faster.
I felt a little defensive when you brought up backups but then I remember that freaking bottle of Estée Lauder Double Wear living in my drawer since 2018 😩 I really appreciate your outlook.
I think the back-up trap is very true for some more decorative or "optional" (I recognize that for some folks, especially women it can be or feel very much not optional), something more susceptible to aesthetic taste changes, etc. But doesn't necessarily apply in the same way to staples such as face wash, deodorants, toothpaste, etc. Things that you are practically GUARANTEED to use everyday and you'd have to buy immediately if you ran out. I think those things can have their own buy in bulk traps! But keeping one in reserve and one in use so that I don't have to make an unplanned trip to the store is definitely a stress and money saver for me.
You missed the point on that one. She's not talking about having one in store and one in use, she's talking about the habit of keep buying even when you have enough already just to get the excitement to have something new. As she said, that can easily turn out into having 4-5 of the same product open at the same time, which is not healthy at all. As per the buying in bulk, even deodorant and toothpaste expire, if you buy 5 cause of a good deal, you'll still end up using a year old toothpaste at some point
@@EvaLoVerde as I said, buying in bulk has its own traps and shouldnt be done for everything! And your point above is what she made in her second and third items, not her first which she did describe as specifically having multiple, identical items. The later points were about constantly buying and opening new things while you still have the original. I'm specifically talking about if you have an identical staple you already know you like and use everyday. If I have a face wash I use and it runs out in the morning I'm going to need more of that same face wash in less than 24 hours. If I don't have one already on hand that's a side trip to the store, which is setting me up for more spending. 2 on hand (one in use one in storage) is a number that works for me, but that might be different for folks depending on their location and ease of access.
@@LadyOrpheus the real trap is: when you are running out of a face wash, as per your example, you can see it, and you have plenty of time to get to the store and buy a new one, she never said you must to use every last drop before buying a new one
@@kreed3494 I wish I was that perfect and I never said that doll. It's just that GENERALLY SPEAKING, IN MOST CASES when running out of a self care product you can clearly see that and have a few weeks to pick up another one. You need a more detailed explanation?
Totally agree on the Saves. I had tons of saves but during pandemic I didn't use them + I changed my taste to almost no make up after people started going into offices. Thew out majority of makeup stuff.
Great takeaways Hannah! Can be applied to more than just beauty.... Costco I'm looking at you! 😂 My boyfriend always has to reel me in at Costco because most items are good value, but we won't go through 3 different Costco size cereals before they go bad. So, one Costco size cereal at a time for me. Backups can go bad before you get through it all!
Who knew there were so many perfect people out there living their life without an extra penny to spare on any kind of pleasure and never ever making a wrong choice when it comes to spending. You make it sound positively miserable!! 🤣 Hannah is using beauty products as an example, but I would bet that there are very few people out there who can't replace those beauty products with over priced coffee, food, clothes, shoes, handbags, kitchen gadgets that are never used, furniture, plants, books that are never read, the list could go on and on. Why, when we see someone who has spent time and energy working to grow and improve themselves and has the courage to use themselves as an example for others, do we feel the need to belittle their story and what they are doing. And why do beauty products seem to be the worst offenders of the list above? That some how someone is more superior than another depending on what they are overspending on?? Have we really not reached past the place of snap judgement on a person who is putting themselves out there with a view to helping others, regardless of whether or not their message resonates with you. Take not their comments to heart dear Hannah, you are out here doing the good work!! ❤
I commented and had my own take no belittling intended. Why can't there be a variety of views? I've been low use and low buy in many ways and interested in what others are doing. I shared what I'm doing. For this I'm a bad person? This is a discussion board. Behavioural issues are worth discussing but sometimes it does get a bit intense.
Beauty is Hannah's focus, so that's why this video focuses on it. It's also one of the areas (beauty and fashion) that isn't really "needed" compared to say food staples. I do wonder if there are more masculine hobbies which get this too, like say tech and gaming.
I have watched a lot of videos on how to curb my spending. For some reason, this one really resonated with me. Buying backups, yup. I have four of my favorite mascaras waiting to be used, bought LAST YEAR during the Nordstrom anniversary sale that I haven’t gotten to yet. Functional dupes, omg. It was so eye opening! So helpful! I don’t know how to thank you and I am going back to watch your other vidoes.
I needed this! I’ve recently gotten on a lipstick rampage where I’ve been buying so many of only slightly different colors 🤦♀️Good reminder to stick to what I already have and see what I like before replacing
The “upgrades” part calling me tf out 🤦♀️ and comes at a great time, this Ulta sale…gonna try to not buy yet another toner while I have two others I need to use up. Thank you.
Thank you Hannah for another insightful message on spending unnecessary on things we really don't need .I had so many lipsticks in various shades because I was looking for the perfect colour now I only have one that I use for all occasions.I won't lie getting to that point wasn't easy but making a commitment to have a low buy year in 2022 has really helped.I also write up everything that I buy and have a justification journal to grade my purchases that I now buy.
Feeling fully called out in the best possible way 😅Thank you Hannah for your vulnerability and insights! These behaviors apply to so much more than just beauty, and are very helpful.
I try to stick to the Replacements Only rule for the most part. I figure that, if I really want to try out a new product, I can probably get a sample of it.
Me too. So easy to get samples of anything you could possibly want. Or go halfs with a friend on some high end new try and decant some into a travel bottle.
It's embarrassing, but I have handled money really poorly most of my adult life. I have mild credit card debt because I impulsively spent money I didn't have. I tried to "keep up appearances" and solve my emotional issues with unhealthy consumerism. A lot of my spending was beauty related. The amount of clothing I donated, makeup I threw away, skincare that I didn't really care about left me realizing that I spent so much money on things that did a huge disservice to my future (now present self) as well as now I just don't have anything to show for the money I spent. It really put into persepective how I need to be careful with my money and appreciate the wonderul products, clothing, houseware etc... that I do have. I am now on a tight and painful budget to pay back my credit card debt. Don't make the same mistakes I did.
Loved this video and Love the advice you give, Hannah! You are so articulate and have an incredible way of putting into words the vague ideas I haven't fully conceptualized in my mind. Thank you! I'm looking forward for the additional videos! I also LOVE your concept of "No Holy Grails" and it has become a cornerstone idea in my lifestyle and shopping habits.
Love this takeover! I've been watching HLP's channel since her no buy year. Her insights have helped me examine and change my own thinking and spending. It's been so helpful to be able to check in with these concepts in various contexts, so I can make sure they're a part of my daily practice.
Hannah's channel helped me in ways I only realized in retrospect. She is so insightful & sharing her journey has influenced so many of us to spend our money & mental space wisely.
I feel like the other thing people don't consider when they stock up during a sale is that businesses have sales literally all the time. The chances of that place having a sale the next time you need new eyeliner or summer shirts or whatever is pretty high, so you can usually just wait. Also the functional dupes idea is so brilliant - I'd never thought about it that way before!
The point about upgrades is so true. The chase for the "holy grail" just has to die. It triggers dissatisfaction but like, come on, there is no such thing as a PERFECT XYZ. We will always be able to find something wrong because that's how marketing works..we need to figure out what we really want and need in a product and then the "good to haves" part of a product.
Such simple but brilliant advice! Really try to do the replacements technique but temptation is real!! I prioritise not having the clutter around me to sway me from compulsive buying. Thanks!! ❤️❤️
I can relate so much to this! I’m only now accepting my problem spending, especially related to cosmetics. I’ve fallen so many times into the back-up trap! I’ve spent hundreds of euros (if not thousands 😭) in things just because of the feeling of « saving » in the long term for things that I inevitably end up getting tired of. It’s honestly embarrassing. I’m so happy to hear someone put this type of experience into words. It’s refreshing, and actually really helpful.
omg i can relate, thank you!! i have the same principle as well, but only after I turned 28 and now I am 32, I used to be a gold member at sephora and some Korean branded website for skincare and makeup and I was always overwhelmed whenever I need to go abroad or what to use to an event..it's really funny looking back, I bought so much stuff when I only love one foundation and maybe 3 coloured eyeshadow. I am happy owning minimally of everything now and trying to preach to people around me that are 25 yrs old above and working, and have 20 lipstick of the same shade and dupes of one another, but it will take some time and that is ok, for some, this is their way of relieving the stress of work and I get that but wastage is also stressing one's mind too.
love this series with Hannah so much!! she is the best. I would love to see something on TFD/TFC with Jessica DeFino. insanely talented writer who is taking down the beauty industry bit by bit (and in turn, helping us all save some $ and gain us some confidence!!!)
I used to be such a sucker for functional dupes! The one I’m still in the process of training out of me is the “upgrades” tendency, especially with skincare I’m always looking for something “better” even when what I’m using is sufficient. Great video!
I also did a no buy in 2020 and i do completly agree with all points. With Backup you also have the point, that beauty trends are shifting. If you buy backups, you might not want to use the same product after you used it up, because the trends have changed. Also Beauty Sales are almost every month. If you are running out of a product you can still wait for a sale to buy the product you desire for less money.
Valuable lessons!! I have already stopped looking for my next cleanser or skin care product simply because I am bored of the current products I use. Please also do a video on financing planning when it comes to buying clothes. Much love ❤
Holy crud this resonates with me. I literally just bought "functional backups" of Lisa Eldridge lipsticks - I have way too many now. I just bought a hoard of sunscreen and shopped online out of boredom and self-soothing!
I was just about to get sucked into the idea of "what I have is not good enough, and I need the new product with the new ingredient". But I came to my senses and decided to finish what I have first, which will take months, before I try the new one. It doesn't make sense to leave the old one to go to waste, and spend more money on the same category of the thing. It's so simple and logical, but thanks Hannah for articulating all those ideas and behaviors.
I've learned to buy differently since I noticed that I almost NEVER wish I'd bought something that I decided not to buy but I REGULARLY regretted buying things that I ended up never wearing or using. If I'm on the fence these days, the answer is always no. And if it's an online purchase it's got to sit in the "cart" for at least 24 hours before I even ask myself how much I want it. There's a pair of wide leg trousers I didn't buy about 30 years ago that I still remember wistfully. That's it. One.
That sale fallacy my mom falls for all the time. Unless I am with her and shes sharing the deal with me, it can work. She also falls for it because she hates inflation, so she thinks she should buy a bunch of things all at once to also “save money.” Doing this with groceries is worse because pantry and fridge space is finite, so like you said, when you run out is when you go shopping again.
As someone who has really sensitive skin and is very particular about the products i like.. i have lost count of how many things have been discontinued in the last 20+ years when I'm almost done a product.. go to buy more.. find out it's discontinued.. get upset.. and panic trying to figure out what i will use now.. So whenever I have a product i love.. and use a lot of, i have at least 1 unopened sitting there, while i use the opened one. And when the opened one is dine, i open the other one.. and go buy a new one.. to sit there unopened. And i tend to do it when it's on sale. I dont have a whole bunch of the same product.. but having at least 1, gives me a bit more time to find a replacement if it becomes discontinued so I dont panic about it as much. Same goes with clothes.. i have kind of a semi capsule wardrobe.. and if i find a tshirt that is perfect in every way.. i buy a couple of them in different colours.
This came at the right time bc I just bought every shade I might ever want of lip colors. I told myself I need them for different colors. But you’re right, I’m not gonna need all of them. Now I’m gonna use what I got and decide what’s a future rebuy and what isn’t but I don’t plan to do that again
Waiting until a product is completely used up before buying a replacement has made my bathroom feel much more like a spa and less like a cluttered mess. Thank you, Hannah! Thank TFD for having Hannah on your channel.
I should give it a go since my bathroom started looking like a drugstore.. and I dont like it!
I try it the problem is a certain skincare line I use is only sold online.
Mini mascaras are perfect for this! The mascara often dries up so quickly anyways so the small size saves you money and lasts just as long.
Funny how the categories of things women typically spend money on become “unnecessary purchases” to financial planners but the things men like to spend money on are somehow major financial investments that you should be budgeting for
Yes I’m an esthetician too and I don’t have to buy it I get it free
@@LexiLadonna What are these "major financial investments" men buy?
My comment is the opposite lmao
Am absolutely committed to loving what I already own and finish what I have first before buying yet another product that is pretty much the same, I was always on the ‘hunt’ for something better…thanks to HLP I now only buy a new item when what I have been using is done with ❤️❤️❤️ buying to use and not to try hits home for me
Well done!!
This is awesome! You’re almost there!!! I’m going to do a no but September.
@@blinkur09mom good luck you won’t regret it x
I always rationalised buying back ups as "saving money in the long run". But you're right, it was just satisfying my need to buy something.
The most important things you can do for your skin
1. hydrate internally. Just drink water! too easy! Maybe have some limited salt, aids with water retention.
2. get enough sleep
3. exfoliate sensibly and only reasonably regularly
4. use sunscreen religiously and top up during the day
5. make sure you're matching your skin undertones with colours that already work for you.
6. don't rub your eyes, wash your hands before touching them.
7. don't share makeup with anyone else for hygiene reasons
8. wash your brushes
9. don't apply too much foundation, mix it with moisturiser before putting it on
10. shower after cleansing but before putting makeup on
11. avoid junk food, smoking and alcohol.
'I have fewer but nicer things around me' that's what I wanna hear and I'm achieving that goals 😌
Helped me so much too!
"This fits perfect and looks so good!"
But you know what?
This is the collab I didn't know I needed and now I don't want it to end.
Her tips are so helpful and my storage and wallet thank her
I appreciate the chance to hear someone talk through these behaviors! Trying so hard to not anxiety shop and Hannah’s insights help much!
I'm really enjoying this series. She's my age. We have similar financial vices. I'm learning a lot. Thank you for this series.
Love a no buy year. Currently doing a low buy and it really Is life changing
Love this video! I love how practical and grounded Hannah's advice is while still being rooted in something that is actually pretty philosophical and deep. Her videos make me love the internet again because I feel like I'm experiencing something more than just entertainment, but actually learning and growing and exploring.
You said this so perfectly, and i agree wholeheartedly!
She is so calm. Loving this series.
@@missbola1997 thats what i do too for basic items, and it works cuz i dont have to keep shopping for them hehe :P
I need to start this 😩
Yes! I had thrown away a hair product for the same reason. So upsetting. Products expire and are not worth taking up space if your not even going to enjoy them
I don't go much on expiry dates. Mascara is one that undeniably cannot overshoot. The rest? They usually can be used with no issues.
I'm a guys yet I love how these concepts are applicable to me. Loving this series and have started to be more mindful of my purchases. Cheers! :)
I love this video because the concepts can easily be transfered across most things that people compulsively buy.
I'm so glad this series was put together. Great collaboration x
I adore the transferrable format of this video: many can relate to over-bulk-buying and buying similar items to those which we already own
I like that she centered this video around themes/categories of products.
I always really appreciate Hannah's insights, especially as a beauty/ beautiful things lover, loving this takeover!!
I feel like people here in the comments are intentionally overlooking themes, behaviors, etc that can be applied to anything at all and writing off all of the basic advice because they don’t care about makeup or whatever lol
This is all excellent advice across the board simply to stop impulse buying.
Thank you for opening my eyes.
This is such an intelligent, nuanced take versus just naming categories / items where you try to limit yourself. All the elements you covered are very familiar to me and it’s given me something to think about!
Hannah has made me critically assess my purchases of beautiful things. For that, I am forever grateful.
@@EvaLoVerde you’ve never ran out of something important and had to run to the store? I wish I was so perfect
Hannah is using beauty products as an example, but I would bet that there are very few people out there who can't replace those beauty products with over priced coffee, food, clothes, shoes, handbags, kitchen gadgets that are never used, furniture, plants, books that are never read, the list could go on and on.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Replacements only for life! I’m doing a low-buy this year to save for a house, and these tips will absolutely help me on my way 💜
I needed this!
The only backups I buy on regular basis - is hair dye on sale. Because I need 1 pack each month.
I met Hannah tango dancing c. 2009. She won't remember me, but it was still cool unexpectedly seeing someone I recognize.
Hannah's channel helped me in ways I only realized in retrospect. She is so insightful & sharing her journey has influenced so many of us to spend our money & mental space wisely.
Love to see Hannah on here ! She has inspired a lot of changes I’ve made in my consumption habits !!
I feel like the other thing people don't consider when they stock up during a sale is that businesses have sales literally all the time. The chances of that place having a sale the next time you need new eyeliner or summer shirts or whatever is pretty high, so you can usually just wait.
Also the functional dupes idea is so brilliant - I'd never thought about it that way before!
i love this woman!!!! the way she speaks about her journey is just so easy to digest.
I needed to hear this, my stockpile of skincare is getting ridiculous
The point about upgrades is so true. The chase for the "holy grail" just has to die. It triggers dissatisfaction but like, come on, there is no such thing as a PERFECT XYZ. We will always be able to find something wrong because that's how marketing works..we need to figure out what we really want and need in a product and then the "good to haves" part of a product.
Re backups: They also take up storage space at home and storage space is not free, but paid for in form of high rent.
Such simple but brilliant advice! Really try to do the replacements technique but temptation is real!! I prioritise not having the clutter around me to sway me from compulsive buying. Thanks!! ❤️❤️
Loved this. Maybe I am not a make up person myself, but this situation always happens to me when it comes to sunscreen or hair products I never use.
This information is actually so important! I didn’t realize I had these thought patterns
OOF, i feel personally called out by the topic of buying backups unnecessarily... how dare you encourage me to do better! 🤣🤣🤣
Back-ups: point well taken. I’ve had things expire. The lure of the sale is strong. I must use the force in the future!!
You make a point regarding back ups. I actually committed to not buying anything at the ulta sale this go around while continuing to shop my stash.
That's it. One.

Love seeing these two channels come together 💖

As a long time fan of both channels, I really appreciate this collaboration!
