    In this episode we visit the abandoned soviet radio telescope in Armenia, invented by the Armenian Paris Heruni. Unfortunately we had a lot of bad luck during our trip, so we were limited with filming and time.

    that room with the black paper-like stuff on the walls in an anechoic chamber, it is used to damp all the (radio) signals that could interfere with the super sensitive receiver of the telescope. Probably this room used to be where the calibrate or benchmark the receiver

    So sad. I don't care, USSR or USA, a group of people spent a lifetime building that thing, working so hard on installing all of that, all the money, all the time, in ruin, forgotten. I mourn my fellow architects, scientists and builders, regardless of country, for their incredible work, that was never realized, recognized or respected. I am so very sorry.

      Given the state of Armenia's economy and the remote location of the size, that's not a viable option for the country.
      But if you have a few tens of millions of Euros to throw at it, I'm sure the Armenian ministry of tourism would be happy to help you get the required licenses and contacts with local businesses to improve the roads, build hotels and visitor centers, etc. etc..

    The control room is just there to aim the receiver in the dish not to look at the data itself that happens away from the area as they send the recorded data to who requested that recording. The computers used to process the data make way to much radio noise to be anywhere near a recorder and use tons of power so the best setup is have the dish in a radio quiet zone then send the data off to other locations to process.
    In the building that got stripped they would of had large tape recorders that would record any data the receiver picked up and those tapes would then be driven to universities all around the USSR to be processed. With the age of the equipment they would be limited to the number of frequencies that could be scanned at any given moment so they would have to be more selective of what they are looking for. You can also see they lacked access to fiber optics at the time or the data building would of been a longer distance from the dish to reduce the chance of the equipment getting picked up.

    That room with the"Paper" all over it is an RF radiation test range, used for mapping the RF beam and footprint of transmitting and receiving antennas. The paper will be doped with metal and the plastic spongy pyramid shaped sheets are stuck to the mount used for holding the unit on test so as to not radiate or reflect signals.

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well there is plans to revive it. Well atleast desire to do so. How realistic depends on money.
      However most likely that original guidance stuff would be replaced with more modern electronics. Anyway if the electronics have sat exposed for years without maintenance, most likely not usable. Not just the guiding center, but receivers both radio and optical, data capturing etc. Probably needs a redo. Scientific instruments need carefull maintenance and upkeep regularly. Sitting decade still without use ain't good for it.
      However good side is electronics and instruments have come long way since 1980's, so actually that isn't as impossible as it sounds (or nearly as expensive as it originally was in 1980's). Well reviving the old setup is. However more likely is take out the old receivers, old instruments, old electronics, just leave the main mechanical bits. Then just redo the instrumentation from ground up with new electronics. Anyway CCD's have come long way since 1980's as as radio tech. So while cutting edge at 1980's and 1990's most likely the instrumentation would anyway need an upgrade even if in perfect working order.

    10:45 Looking on the inside this complex must have been abandoned sometime after the fall of the USSR, for some of the stuff looks too new.

    I would take one of those triangle mirror pieces, some of the black paper etc and make a sculpture as a tribute to the place.

    Wow that was amazing! Did they use it for space observation? I think it is even bigger than Aricebo. Nice control room!

    I've never seen anything like it. Nobody in the USSR had a budget for anything that posh, or so I thought. It could be fixed and used for something useful.

    Ich liebe alte russische Technik! Einfach, robust, durchdacht! Ich denke Russland hat die besten Ingenieure, Es war ja oft nicht alles verfügbar, so musste mit den Mitteln gearbeitet werden, die da waren. Großartige Leistung! Grüße aus Deutschland
