  • Excerpt from the composition Chun Seol (Snow of spring) for the 17 string gayageum, performed by Ji Aeri, a virtuoso performer of gayageum, the Korean zither, accompanied by Kim Woongsik on the janggu (hourglass-shaped drum). The excerpt presents a brief section of this composition created in 1991 by Hwang Byung Ki, great master of Korean music, in which Ji Aeri is featured in close-up; the video allows to appreciate the specific performing technique used to play gayageum. The 17 string gayageum is a modern evolution of the traditional 12 string gayageum, and, nowadays, is becoming increasingly used by musicians. Ji Aeri studied with the great gayageum masters Lee Jae-Suk and Hwang Byung-Ki and is a former member of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts (NCKTPA).
The concert has been organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in cooperation with the King Sejong Institute Venice (KSIV) and with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.
Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, 26 May 2015.

Beautiful stringed instrument. I already loved the sound of the Chinese forerunnner, the Guzheng, but this instrument has a tone completely of its own, love it.

Yess... The koto and gayegeum and their ancestor the guzheng. All unique and so interesting in their own ways. I like the guqin from China and the geomungo from Korea as well. The geomungo is just as thoughtful sounding but has this tenacity to it... Be sure to listen to a gayegeum player named Hwang Byungki, one of the great masters

Before this video I saw one about how these instruments are made. Now hearing this lady playing it with such mastery (she's clearly a long time well trained professional)... it makes me appreciate, no, correction, admire this music so much more. Deep respect, deep bow. 🙇‍♂️
