"even in our weirdness, we want our weirdness to be palatable to people" this is something I think about so much. Even just earlier today I was watching a video about some autistic creator on tiktok that was getting absolutely heinous messages sent to them for... showing happiness online?, I guess people thought it was bad somehow, tbh I'm still confused what they were mad about. But people swear up and down they like being "quirky" or "i'm so weird lol" but the second anybody steps out of line and expresses themselves even a lil bit differently.... oh they meant "different" but not like... FOR REAL lmao. noted for future reference 💀
I had the same feelings as you on House of Hunger, but found that I liked Year of the Witching a lot more, which is odd because it's technically YA. I say technically because the character is 17, but I've found that Alexis Henderson books sound/feel the same whether they're adult or YA.
This vlog was so interesting, these aren’t usually books I’d pick up but it makes me want to try branching out. After the flop that was Bunny, Im glad this one by that author ended up being a much better read! Also I cant WAIT for book club this month bc….whewww chile i have thoughts 😭
Bad Fruit was a cover buy for me. I just couldn’t help myself. It was a 4 for me, I wasn’t mad that I bought it and it was weird/ interesting. The emotions felt so first hand that I couldn’t help but think the author must have went through some complicated family dynamics
All’s Well is a book I thoroughly enjoyed!! I DNFed bunny lol. I totally agree with you about House of Hunger. Pretty underwhelming and ridiculous in the romance plot. I think if you liked the feminist nonfiction book, I think you’d enjoy and check out the essay collections Body Horror by Anne Elizabeth Moore and The Hard Crowd by Rachel Kushner
I have an unsolicited book rec for you Kenya! It's called Hold My Girl by Charlene Carr. It's basically two moms who struggled with infertility went to an IVF clinic and one has a child but one has a miscarriage. Turns out their eggs got swapped so they have to figure out how to live life with one mom giving birth to the other's bio child. That's not the best synopsis but the story balances being character driven with also having an interesting plot. I think you'd really like it! I'm reading it now 😊.
i gave both bunny and all's well 5 stars, but i loved all's well more, i'd give it six stars if i could. i think her books have a formula and it works, but all's well was the best execution she's gonna get with that format so she should retire it now. i liked rouge less because i kept thinking about how she did it better in her last book lol. just added bad fruit to my tbr, and i still wanna read house of hunger but i will be getting it from the library
i absolutely loved all’s well, can’t remember how i felt about bunny, but based on your reviews i feel like i have to warn you to stay far away from “rouge”… its her worst book in my opinion, even less grounded than bunny :/
Bunny’s one of the books that got me back into reading in 2021 and i gave it and All’s Well 5 stars 🫨🩵 Bunny needs a re-read tho, I think I might have loved All’s Well even more! I’m glad you liked it though, I’m always disappointed to see people feeling underwhelmed by it 😭
