I didn't catch that until now, but that's Hanse Davion putting some hurt on the fake Death Commandos that attacked New Avalon during the 4th Succession War. Pretty sweet!

in a single map, lance vs lance typical game, the Locust is useless. If you face one, just ignore it and fire on other targets - the firepower of a Locust is negligible unless it get to your rear arc - it will be zooming around very fast, probably hitting nothing. In case the Locust makes the mistake to be at melee range, just punch or kick it once to cripple it.
In campaigns it has other uses and is very good for scout if the terrain is plain enough to not require jump jets. The classic 1V model is very good against conventional infantry with 2 machine guns

I just took out a Locust 1M last week, that thing was a pile of scrap in three turns

The 1M is a gimmick mech specialized in killing stuff that moves 7/11 or slower and has nothing longer ranged than 3/6/9. If it can use its range band to force the enemy to roll 13s while it hits on 11s it's just a question of whether its ammo or their armor runs out first. Playing it in a mixed lance the way the intro box promotes it's pretty terrible, but playing a meeting engagement between two light recon lances on rolling map sheets it's a single serving mini gouda.

If the Locust 1M is played correctly, it is almost impossible to hit.
It will have a +4 movement modifier and will stay at medium to long range for most return fire.
If the player takes it for a mini-Archer and remains stationary it is toast of course.

Every time I play with a locust it gets absolutely shot to pieces
I usually have it run around like a headless chicken trying to make my opponents miss shots with at least +2. The only time the locust has ever worked for me was when I had one dodge every dice roll, get behind the enemy lance and cause such a distraction that it was the only thing getting shot at

You're not getting to long range against a PPC unless you've got an LRM lol

If I could, I would use Steiner scout fast mech: Atlas.

YA some one who gets that a light Mechs armor is its speed and it should always run are jump if it can. only move less than its max to set up shots in rear armor but be careful of getting close to physical attack range.

You can find the BattleTech starter on the Catalyst Games website, on Ebay, or even Amazon. It runs around $60. Vehicles you can get from Iron Wind Metals, but be warned that they are expensive. You can get them at a little better price on Ebay.
