First off.....very nice playing, I enjoyed that a lot.....
But for my personal opinions of these guitars, I currently own both. I acquired the Yamaha SLG200N first, and only because I wasn't fully happy with it did I look into a Godin. Both SOUND great.....it's other factors that make a difference for me. The Yamaha has a traditional FLAT fingerboard. I play a lot of chords higher up the neck, and the intonation of the Yamaha is very imprecise up there. Even after having a compensated saddle made, exact tuning isn't possible. The controls on the Yamaha are a bit more difficult to access, especially since I use a pick. I like the onboard tuner and effects on the Yamaha. The Godin (I opted for the Multiac Encore model, so no multi-pin synth capabilities) was about $1300. I use a D'Addarrio Micro tuner on it, and my Fishman amp has reverb and chorus, so I still have those effects. The fingerboard is slightly radiused, making it a little easier to play. The intonation on the Godin is almost perfect, with no set-up needed from the factory. The controls on the Godin are much easier to use. So, the "playability" (which I know is subjective) is much better on the Godin......the intonation (which is critical to me) is much better on the Godin. The price is higher on the Godin.....I paid about $700 for the Yamaha, used but new condition, opposed to $1300 for the Godin.....but for gigging, being comfortable AND in tune is absolutely necessary for me. I love the unique appearance of the Yamaha, but not enough to sacrifice quality. In short......my Yamaha SLG200N is now for sale, the Godin Multiac Encore Nylon is a "keeper". Thanks for posting this.

I fully agree with you. I own Godin Multiac ACS SA Nylon and Yamaha SLG200N. I think the Godin is more comfortable guitar. The intonation is perfect and it sounds more brighter than the Yamaha. I also don't like the flat fingerboard on Yamaha and I want to sell it.

I'm not have any intonation problems on my SLG200S, perfection to the last fret. I usually just pick one of the fundamental harmonics to tune with to eliminate finger pushing error and it is spot on top to bottom on every fret.
Guess I got lucky with my bridge.
That said have a competent luthier replace the bridge with a good solid bone filed properly to compensate and it'll be gold I am sure.
Never had a guitar I haven't had to tweak in some way over my last 53 years playing but my Yamaha is so close to spot on I can just live with it happily.
I'm adding a couple of Lollars to it after Xmas, gold foil neck and Johnny Smith bridge, so I can use it as my main guitar performing in a prog fusion band, I think it may become my main guitar once that is finished.

@@ExpatZ266have you tried the nylon? Steel string has more accurate intonation than the nylon. Most of the time the saddle is also compensated or angled. For Nylon, SLG200N i also experience intonation problems even after several attempts on truss rod adjustments.

I'm not a guitar player. Just a keys guy and producer. A friend will come this week to record some nylons on a song and he asked me what guitar to bring between these exact two guitars. I'll tell him the Yamaha no doubt. It's so smooth.

I own the Yamaha SLGNW and love it. I have very large hands and need the wide nut. I did not care for the nylon strings that came on it because of the very long sustain in the lower strings. E and A strings so I tried a set of D'Addario hard tension and those string worked great. took care of the long sustain in the lower strings and crisp up the upper register. I'm very happy with the sound now. $15.00 fix. The review was great, thank you.By the was you can hear Stephanie Jones play the Yamaha SLG200N. Stephanie sounds fantastic on it.

Your playing, presentation and summing up are spot on. Firstly, I would add that I agree wholeheartedly with you about the quality of an acoustic guitar and the Godin is sublime. Where you say 'a little harsh', in the mids, I would say 'bright' and this is likely to mellow with age. That said, $1,000 [price difference] is a big lump for many people, (myself included). On the other hand, among the many points in favour of the Yamaha, try putting the Godin in the overhead locker of an aeroplane.
    Great review, thanks.
PS I've just bought a SLG110N from ebay and I'm impressed. Maybe one day I'll have a Godin.

I switch around Ovation Elite 12string, Hohner G3T and Godin

Excellent video, playing, format, execution and content. I prefer the sound of the Godin for its openness as you say, it is more natural sounding to me. The Yamaha has less definition and "string" sound. It is as if the treble was turned down, muffled somewhat. When the highs are not there to begin with, they can't be added back very easily. BTW I have the Godin although I haven't played it in quite some time, so, I feel like I am listening with fresh ears. Again thank you for an excellent video!

The Godin is more brilliant on the highs, but the Yamaha has a lovely mellow sound, like a real instrument played near the neck, but it lacks that sparkle in the highs. Of course nothing can replace a real classical guitar sound, but they both are great in their own way. After all, they were not created to replace a Ramirez but they do the job. Great playing technique, anyway.

So nice, unfortunately it has a few flaws and it's not a professional instruments and your experience confirms it..

multiac SA with RMC preamp have very soft and warm tone, it sound good too for me, but it have less "woody" sound than duet ambiance.. but multiac SA have 13 pin for synthesizer.. so we can explore more sound with Synth.. 😊

I had also both, I kept the Godin (favourit neck - with a slight radius/ curve = easier to take barré chords). The Yamaha I sold, because I like the older version better, SLG 100N - that has a bit thinner neck, and better response. Wonderful guitar. Better woods I believe.
But, all of them sounds a bit plastic, and need some good eq. My solution was Fishman Aura stomp box, an advanced eq that removes the "quack" from the piezo.

Just like you , had to use mostly piezo to be able to hear decent hi and low sounds, and the same with the equalizer. Even with the effects off there are still some. I ended up returning it. Haven't tried the Godin but it is not as portable as the yamaha. You make both guitars sound really good. The guitar is very unforgiving if you don't play very well, it makes weird sounds. Wow, nice review. Very cinematic, love the editing style.
I had both of these guitars. And Yamaha is my prefered one. Not only it is very portable and light, but to me it sounds more natural and warm. Ofcourse, I was abusing the built in reverb, that is Amazing in my opinion to have. Also it has a Tuner, very handy. Reverb effects are great. The downsides of it for me was a screw-in mechanism to attach the other part of the guitar (dont know how to explain it well) the screws that tighten the loose wooden part are not holding really well, they unscrew. Also if you dont use the amp, and only the headphones directly into yamaha - dont expect a great sound, but it works for practise in general and very useful in some situations! The other thing where Godin is more considerable to me is that is it has a model with a nut width for electric guitarists. Yamaha comes only in fat, wide necks. I guess it does not matter if you are used to classical. Godins Midi - i never used it although my guitar had this option, maybe if you want to experiment with some strange sounds then consider Godin. In my case i needed a silent practise guitar with a round warm tone and i liked yamaha more. After that i sold them both and went for an electric guitar route 😉

    • @FabioGrando
      @FabioGrando  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey thanks for sharing your experience, very interesting.. Tuner and reverb are just a wonderful feature for the Yamaha, which is imho an amazing practice guitar, so easy to setup and play at any time, also at night in a condo.. I know the trouble about the screw, but that happens to my just with one guitar strap and not with the other one, which has the hole a little bit wider and more loose.. I find it to sound good with headphones though (it's important to use quality ones of course).
      Thanks again!

I've had both. The Godin is my current go to guitar. Far superior. However, I love the sound and play-ability of the Yamaha. For the price, it's amazing. I also currently have the Yamaha steel string silent. It's great as well. I have no need for another acoustic guitar right now. The Yamaha does it all and sounds amazing. I may get another Yamaha nylon just for playing at night. Playing through the head phones is magic. It really shines. Blending the mics is my favorite sound.

It’s hard to say how long it lasts, it starts flashing with a red led inside when you plug the jack to alert you that it is running low, but you still have your time to change it, maybe even a couple of hours, I’ll pay more attention to it and let you know.. then when the situation is more severe it starts flashing while in use and that’s when you actually have to worry

I have the slightly newer Godin Nylon Deluxe Multiac which has a real mic instead of the emulation. I just ordered the Yamaha Nylon though for travel because it is more airline and travel friendly. It won’t be as good, but it will be decent, and I can bring it as carry on on a plane, or leave it in car in the sun if I am traveling. It also does that headphone thing for hotel room practice without driving my wife nuts.

Hi, great video! I'm thinking of getting one of these for live gigs with a jazz group (for bossa novas, Earl Klugh-type stuff and such). Do you have any observations as to which of the guitars cuts better through the mix in a live band setting? As solo instrument, I think the Godin sounds better, but I feel the more open sound can get more easily lost in the mix. Any thoughts?

Firstly, Your piece Jasmina is beautiful, Ok the sound, the Yamaha had a slightly less synthetic sound, perhaps a little better tone, Godin had a bright direct clear sound, almost as if the difference between Spruce and Cedar on Classicals, on the 'Nail Chord' the Godin was by far the better sound , Yamaha sounded muddled, overall the Godin is the best of these two, when you add the Playability ( as you mentioned) and Comfort, I've not tried either, so thanks for the Video

Excellent video, thanks. I own both models. The Godin is by far the best for playability, no set up required. The action is fantastic. However, the sound definitely sits in the mid to high range no matter what EQ you use. This is fine for some styles. The Yamaha has a much higher action (despite set up) and is less playable. Not terrible just not as good as the Godin but then it’s only a third of the price. The sound of the Yamaha is better in my opinion. Play it through a decent set of noise cancelling over ear headphones and it’s spectacular, particularly on second reverb and about 80% piezo pickup setting. I love playing both but tend to switch them depending on the style of music I’m playing. If I could blend the playability of the Godin with the sound of the Yamaha I’d have the perfect instrument in my opinion.

I have played the Yamaha for several years and with careful
set up and attention to truss rod adjustment and bridge height
it is possible to make it very comfortable to play. The original factory
set up was was not good. I bought another bridge piece from Yamaha
(I didn't want to mess up the original) and filed it down, fitted it and filed
it down again, refitted it and eventually got it just about right. It plays beautifully.

You might find this link helpful : th-cam.com/video/QRSAQocR_rY/w-d-xo.html My approach was
not quite as scientific as in this video, I adjusted the truss rod first to make sure the neck was perfectly flat
and then I removed the saddle and sanded it down 1 mm at a time. I didn't remove the strings, I just loosened them
and retuned. I did this several times until it felt right.

@@FabioGrando I actually bought the Deluxe here in Central Asia. However, I am only comparing it to the sounds I’ve heard vs the Duet Ambiance on TH-cam. I really think that the microphone modelling is a clever feature and the positions actually sound quite different from each other - at least on TH-cam. The internal microphone on my Deluxe isn’t all that impressive. That being said, I am able to obtain some very decent sounds using my AER Classic Professional amp which was specifically designed for nylon string guitars.

I would say that the “made in china” factor is irrelevant for all medium to high-end Yamaha guitars. Regarding this particular yamaha, yeah, the construction/built might be an issue, it is very tilted for travel/home practice.
The Godin has a different audience I guess. It’s a working instrument, lot’s of professionals use it on stage, the built is extremely solid and high quality.
Regarding the sound, they both sound synthetic (fake) and are only good due to the convenience and simplicity of playing live. I myself have a Grand concert.
Summary: the sound of both doesn’t justify the price difference. The built, and as a result the place where you’re going to be playing is what makes the difference. Travel/home vs stage/home.
    Great video!!

I have the Godin, but the Yamaha SLG200N sounds great. Godin can do much more with the built in synth connector. I don't think the Yamaha can do that, but I just like the price and natural sound which speaks a lot. The only drawback is the knobs placement. I've always like their acoustic nylon affordable guitars. Those are solid and the sound projects very well for playing in church choirs.

I was listening through headphones, and I thought the Godin sounded better. The sound seemed fuller and more natural somehow, while the Yamaha sounded more artificial. Perhaps the difference was the mids as you suggest. One thing though, there is a huge price difference between these two at least here in Australia where I'm from. It costs about 3 times as much. Really, for the price of a Godin, I would put that money to a better Classical. Unless of course you are a gigging musician that needs the Godin.

Godin has a more natural sound on the bases and that is what really counts. What you dont want is that scooped Ovation sound on the bases. The Yamaha has that, and that is a no-no. I think can both be dialed using an eq pedal. But by default for me the yamaha sounded more natural, the Godin's mid freq is so pronounced but it already has a built in eq that can be scooped to sound more natural. The only advantage that i can see here for the godin is its body that can be tapped. For the looks ,portability and price yamaha wins for me.

The Yamaha has a clear melodic sound, great for jazz but one has to be careful with the bass balance . Chords nice and warm. The Godin a more acoustic but synthetic sound which cannot replace an acoustic nylon sound. And it makes adifference what type of amp you use. An acoustic or a jazz valve amp.
For my taste nylon jazz with a jazz valve amp the Yamaha wins but a natural acoustic quality nylon is better and even here you have to pick the right one for the job ,not necessarily the most expensive one. And the Yamaha is the less expensive way by far...best regards guitar lovers
