Matt is a Gentleman, a very fastidious skilled engineer, and a pleasure to deal with. He rebuilt a pair of crossovers for me that brought my speakers back to life after 20 yrs. Big up the Devon Massive :)
1- Honored and offended for (UN)like the man's opinion of the speakers' great sounding mid ranges when nothing really is ever brighter than the son. 2- Glad some are listening though and might have even rethought their listening ways 2. 3- And @bigblueocean still THE pond across nevertheless...Shema!!!
Kelvin..I have recently tried an unusual combination because of your recent suggestion. I have a Thorens 150 with a Rega RB300 arm & Nagaoka cartridge as front end. I tried it through a NAD 3020 as a preamp with a Quad 303 power amp I had lying around with my B&W DM5s. What a revelation! I would never have done this without your suggestion and I'm thrilled.....thanks (lover of the hifi I couldn't afford as a kid)
Thanks for the review - good to see Matt branching out. I bought a pair of his refurbed Ditton 15s where he totally rebuilt the crossover and used new high quality caps and added modern binding posts. All on video too! They needed quite a long break-in but they sound much better than I remember them sounding back in the day.
One of the first things I do to a speaker is tap the enclosure with my knuckles to see if you are hearing just the tap on the wood or you can hear the enclosure. The less you hear the enclosure the better damped and internally braced/stiffened it is in my experience.
The way you're describing the sound of these speakers is kind of like the way I'd describe the Epos ES14s. They don't wow you at first, but instead slowly draw you in - into realizing that their midrange is seamless.
I have a pair of matts speakers their a 3 way sealed box highly recommended great sound finish quality product great to deal with nice review kelvin great to see you review a good British business 👍
Love you see this. Nice quality in all the details at a decently affordable price. I'd be interested innpurchasing but I'm all set with pretty much everything audio, in many rooms. I have a great, understanding wife! Haha. Thanks for presenting this.
I wondered if you would get to review his speakers! Sounds like you enjoyed them!! I’ve recently off loaded 2 sets of speakers for him to take a look at! He seems like the real deal!
I percked up when Kelvin mentioned the BBC dip! I've remained loyal to my Spendor SP2s for many years. I've owned Rogers LS 6, 4 and purchased a pair of used 15 ohm LS3/5a in 1991 which I foolishly sold! Oh, and I have owned Spendor Prelude and Spencer Hughes' sonic masterpiece, the Spendor BC 1. If these new speakers have the BBC sound, that can only be a good thing - too few speakers nowadays have "personality" or indeed "class"... Hope Matt's loudspeaker business goes from strength to strength.
After 40 plus years I still enjoy my Castle Acoustics Clyde speakers very much . They are in the same room as my Klipschorns and they look very small in comparison . Of coarse you can not compare them to the big horns but they do have a thing going a musicality and detail that still appeals to me after all these years . I don't need any more speakers but your review peeked my curiosity . I'm in Canada so there is an ocean between us shipping would probably be almost as much as the speakers . Great review tho.
Thanks For The Insight On These Ones. Not Many Speakers sound Good Without a Midrange. Or the lady's voice all comes out of the tweeter. So I Hope These Sound Good. . Thanks. And Just Keep The Reviews Coming WE Love Hearing From You Every Week Like A Ritual. Thanks
I think the BIG Companies do two things / they have measuring microphones and software... so they do that first, but they also, listen to them as well... in the past, the measuring equipment wasn't there, but these days its available to anyone, you can download the software for free and then just get a calibrated microphone and have at it, lots of support forums and FB Groups...
The Haycross speakers, ofcourse I recognize them! On listening to speakers: Revival Audio say they hand tune by listening each crossover of every speaker of their Atalante series. I think the Danish speakers are tuned by listening (except Cheap Jamo's I guess, more like Dynaudio and Buchardt, Dali)
Ive enjoyed watching the Haycross Audio website. I would like to know how a revamped Celestion 44 compares to similar size models Graham Audio, Spendor or Even Wharfedale Linton Heritage
If I would have Matt build me a pair of these or the higher model, I would have mine with Cricklewood Electronics (Monacor) polyprop capacitors. I think he used them before.. I’m not a fan of Solen MKP caps..
You can drive it with any high powered amplified doesn't have to be 80 watts rms 3000 watt amplifier can drive it, very unlikely you would damage them, of course you can and you can do that with an 80 watt, can be more likely because you're stressing the amplifier into clipping, for normal listening it would be so loud you wouldn't exceed more than 10 watts RMS 10 watts RMS is really shouting I think about 90 DB. You want to protect your speakers put a light bulb incandescent on the speaker leads 32 volts 300 milliamp you can use a standard mains 5w light bulb you know the red ones they use for artificial fireplaces heaters, but won't have the same protection. I don't know why manufacturers don't put them into the crossover on the tweeter you get it in Pro Gear but never seen it in hi-fi it's a good protection stop your burning out the tweeter an automatically attenuates its resistance so you have a level response. It's an active component That's why these charts are load of nonsense it is set up a very low level the minute you change your level it alters the response of any curve and impedance if it's not controlled actively

They aren't made by some multi million Dollar private equity owned company, but by one man in a shed where it always rains on and the wind is rattling the roof and there sometimes is a cat. After a day of hard work the man enjoys a pint of ale enjoying music from a home made speaker or one he restored or adapted to taste. Kelvin is helping him out so he can make a living out of his hobby.
You can't appreciate the nuances of hifi sound through TH-cam. Sound demonstration videos are misleading and hence a waste of time for both producer and listener.

The Haycross audio TH-cam channel is well worth a look at too. Very chilled vibe and very interesting

Nice review Kelvin, as we have come to expect from you.
I have a pair of Ruark Talisman rebuilt by Matt and I love them . Really nice bloke ..
Lovely things, beautifully made
Very honest review as per norm.

Wonderfully explained, thanks Kelvin!
Kelvin, interesting review thanks again. No surprise that these are great speakers as Matt is a very knowledgeable guy from all I see on his channel

Love Castle speakers - I have a pair of Avons. Very fragile drivers though, and need a sub to really sing, but very 'musical' as you say :)
yes castle don't get enough love
My Castle Clifton's still compete with many bookies..
Castle is underated but they are lively : they deliver 😉

They are cute little chunkers.
Handmade speakers by an engineer, wow. I would probably match it with a modern amplifier.
I'll have to check Costello's Oliver's Army on the vocal. It's always sounded double tracked to me.
it proberbly is

the would be a good show
Wow! A Upgrade:Turntable 😅
Don't think the dip is at "1 to 4 Hz". Think you mean "1 to 4 dB" in the midrange.
Beautiful little speaker but the BBC midrange dip worries me.

yes interesting my distinction would be monocor harder edged
BBC dip f/r didn’t applied to LS3/5a.
That dip ease the sound of early plastic cones. Bad implication for well engineered speaker drivers.

Bitumen!
Tnx kelvin , what about this size of speakers but active with amp inside? 4.5 inch
Did the sound change in this situation
Megawatt maser here😂😊
Time we had some ES 14's on here, sir and a career history of Robin Marshall ;)
yes anyone got them ?
@@stereoreviewx There's a Naim forum thread 'Epos ES14 Anyone?' Might be worth a try asking there 🤞
so how does the bbc dip compare to the harman curve?

Good morning, Calvin. As I sit here enjoying my cup of coffee, I would love to try those speakers with my newly restored SX-1010. Cheers.
It's Kelvin 😂
I gotta say with that huge vintage amp you might like a big vintage speaker .or just big ?
Have you ever heard EMI Model 62 Speakets? Superior Transient response. Try them with the Schiit Audio 10 watt amp.
I said what about me I didn’t do anything ( the reason)
Ok so a review using a bottom of the range budget amplifier that no one bothers with unless your a NAD-O-PHILE 😂😂😂
This is product placement.
