@allanellis5827 My guess is that when it's shorted, the drivers are charging a little bit of electricity through the short circuit, causing resistance to the cone movement, when resonating with the bass in the room. I often pad my guitar strings to stop them from resonating in sympathy with my system.
I get what you mean, but the vast majority of people will never be able to afford to hear them sound this good, so surely there is also an argument to pair them with more similarly priced components 🤔
PS Audio tech recommended 100 hours for breakin period. My pair arrived yesterday and I will be streaming 24/7 for 4-5 days up to Thanksgiving with the initial listening session on Thanksgiving (I prefer music to football on TGiving!). Interested Jay if you notice differences as you break in the speakers. I am Grateful you are doing this review. You may be the first serious review of the fr5's and certainly the first to pair with the Gryphons. Brava!
I love the idea of connectingthe FR5's to the same equipment that drives your Q7's. I think I mentioned this on your Facebook page, this allows us/you to hear how well they can compete with the Q7's. Obviously, no one is expecting the base from the FR5's that the Q7's produce, but how well do the midrange and high-end match up? How well is the overall performance of the FR5's? This is the way to find out. Excellent.
I just finished typing the question of do you short out unused speakers. About to hit Comment. When you showed the shorting cord! Glad to know you know!
Amazing Jay. Finally you seem to explore what tiny speakers can do in your lab. You are not far away from the legendary BBC approved LS3/5A (I love them). Perhaps you could test Falcon Acoustics Gold Badge LS3/5As on your equipment in the future. Great one.
The public service you're doing cannot be overstated. Thanks, Jay. Quick question related to CH Precision C1.2 DAC you're using now and Mola Mola Tambaqui previously was in the lab: What power cord and interconnects did you use with them?
I mean, I've heard of starting at the source, but his is ridiculous! Seriously though, anyone who thinks that speakers are the most important component in a system needs to ask themselves if this system would sound nearly as good if a $500,000 pair of speaker were being driven by $3,500 worth of electronics.
Mmmm.....(admittedly despite the sound from the video being heard via my humble/rubbish internet connection), it sounds pretty crisp/tight from the outset. This should be really interesting as the new speakers run in over the week. I wonder how much the overall character of the presentation will change as this occurs before it properly settles. By then, what will you think ....?
Am I missing something. Why did you jump the negative to the positive on the highs and lows? Shouldn't it be negative to negative and positive to positive ?
I have Magnepan 1.7i. They are OK but missing depth or something. I'm not an expert, so I can't describe. My Maggie's do fill my living room with sound. Do the FR5's fill the room too ? Thank you & looking forward to hearing your FR5 conclusions.
Out of all the recordings you could have chosen, you choose a modern day Franz Liszt wannabe pseudo virtuoso. Disappointing but I get why you did. His stuff is extremely stylistic and extreme is what you’re all about. Personally, I would have chosen a diverse recording that covers the spectrum in frequency and transients. A guitar is singular in tonal reach. Not my cup of tea. YMMV.
PS Audio proves the maxim: style over substance. I’ve listened to their equipment and have never heard anything approaching musicality. You better hook back up the Magicos before your ears start bleeding. good luck !
A good experiment! It clearly showed that no electronics can pull out budget acoustic systems. As they say: Kharma Veyron 5D for $180,000 with electronics and cables for $50,000 will destroy a set of inexpensive acoustics with electronics for a million. Moreover, without a single chance )
You know Jay, this is a big deal. Speakers need to be tested on a killer front end. It helps the consumer greatly, knowing that said speakers/component can scale up with better gear. We often chase better? sound through not knowing the true potential of what we already own. You should consider this as a public service Jay. Do this more in the future buddy.
8 minutes praise the electronics and 40 seconds playing the FR5 😂😂😂 I wasn’t wrong when I unfollowed you! Wasted 8 minutes just because I like PS Audio
I hope Paul McGowan and Chris Brunhaver watch these FR-5 videos and send you some FR-30 floorstanders. You would be the FIRST TH-cam review. They are probably hesitant since your gear is beyond most of their customers. Also you are the ONLY reviewer I have ever heard of that did not love the BHK 300 amplifiers. Most reviewers purchased their review samples. It will be interesting to see these little guys pushed to their very max. I doubt if PS Audio tested the FR-5 with this level of gear.

Jumper red to red. Jumper black to black. Spk wire red to a red terminal. Spk wire black to a black terminal.
Yep - I fixed it after I filmed it
I thought I had gone to the twilight zone.
Shorting jumpers are the right thing to do when you have an extra set of speakers in the room. Good work Jay.
Can you tell me why the extra speakers needed to be shorted? I am not familiar with this. Thx
@allanellis5827 My guess is that when it's shorted, the drivers are charging a little bit of electricity through the short circuit, causing resistance to the cone movement, when resonating with the bass in the room. I often pad my guitar strings to stop them from resonating in sympathy with my system.
The way you are testing it is the correct way to do it. The component under test should always be the weak Link in the system.
Thanks 😊
I get what you mean, but the vast majority of people will never be able to afford to hear them sound this good, so surely there is also an argument to pair them with more similarly priced components 🤔
Ive done that over the years. From priced matched Amps and speakers too much more expensive amplification to amazing effect. 👍
Totally agree!

This is a fun adventure Jay! Thanks for the content!👊🏽
This will be fun; looking forward to hear how it turns out.
That’s a lot of horsepower on those things 😊

Looking forward to your review. Have high hopes for theese

Jay,
I never thought you are willing to move the Magico. Well done and required to really understand what the ps audio can ro.
Thanks

Thanks man
Jay don't forget speakers need to be broken in to sound their best.
Jay i love the colour of your lab.is that a blue of purple?
Interesting experiment. Can't wait to see results after break-in. Hey Jay, unrelated question: which DAC did you like more, the Tambaqui or the DAVE?
Tambaqui
@@patfrederick7327 wrong. i've experienced it myself and plenty of veteran audiophiles have as well
@@jaysaudiolab thanks!
Jay, a great Piano pusher....ps why didn't you just put those FR 5 's on top of the Magico's ?
lol 😂
Jay, with this place you could use a castle and a place for Magico would be ok. I could use one too :)
That would be cool!
A set of these with a bryston would be decent
Its all the rage wearing audiophile gloves.
I think you need to bi-amp those speakers.
Ask Flemming to send you two more APEX amps.
Get the Sony sscs5 bookshelf speakers and do a review with your front end.
Way to go Jay, but I was expecting you to get angry and turn green, moving those 700 pound speakers!!!
Me too 😂
Again...thank you!
Thanks again!

Like Sesame Street, "One of these things is not like the other".... LOL
If you really want to test those speakers (even the Magico) play Dead can dance -The Serpents Egg….. loud!
I’d select ‘Wind that shakes the barley’.
Looking forward to your thoughts !

Jay, you can title this video “Snow White and the Four Kick-Ass Audio Dwarfs”.
Hahah

I fixed it afterwards
While watching, first thought was fare well to that $100K amp.
Mal Waldron must be wait.C'mon Jay!
Is it just me or do your electronics look tidier and more organized?
They do
If you need a 500k system to drive bookshelf speakers , then the designer seriously doesn't know how to design speakers.
You have done so much Audio group Denmark pr why haven’t you reviewed their gear ? Borresen speakers etc.
Especially those speakers vs the x series

Why the heck would you hook up those small bookshelf speakers to those massively huge wattage amps ?
Because I can man…

I hate to be "That Guy", but I looks like you wired the speakers wrong. Maybe you fixed it off camera.
I fixed it after I filmed. Don’t worry
No, "that Guy" would comment, why this video is still not the actual Review that got teased so many times now.
If you like these can the FR-30's be far behind?
Not sure
So the result will be: These sound pretty damn good on $500000 worth of equipment. Cool. But what can they do on more price appropriate equipment?
Let’s wait and see
