South Dakota late season pheasants! Cattail madness!

- Back to South Dakota with my 2 german shorthair pointers Shilo and Oliver! Saw a lot of late season pheasants and got to hunt a little with my good friend Mick and his lab Rexxy. The weather was a little up and down but definitely warmer then North Dakota was!

Only true hardcore bird hunters will dare to hunt in snow that deep. You're one of them. It's not for those weak of heart, literally. One has to know his own limits and there are times I think I must be crazy when my 5'3" frame is waste deep in snow, 1/2 a mile away from the truck, exhausted with cramps pulling on my leg(s). The thrill of anticipation for the next flush, the constant scanning and interpretation of the dog's body language, the listening for the beeper to go off or his statuesque point keeps me moving. Yet just one flush magically restores my energy level to Full and pushes me on. Just in case that flush never comes, I always carry Snickers bars. They've saved me many times and gives me the energy to get back to the truck. Thanks again for another great video!

First flush =“Wow!!” Snow,cattails and pheasants,the perfect ingredients.
Those big late season birds remind me of WW2 warbirds that were called Avengers when they flush.Super cool.

Thanks Brad, I could barely move when that flush happened, it was so close! A lot of fun hunting in the snow for sure, once you get past the drifts on the edges of the cats it wasn’t too bad. After the first day we hooked South a bit and West and the snow wasn’t as deep thankfully.

Super footage. Your vids are second to no one and I am so happy you guys went after that bird. Too many won’t especially in those conditions so thank you. Also like that you are quiet as I believe it makes a HUGE difference.
I live in Wisconsin but go out there quite often and am hoping for three trips this coming season.

Thank you so much for the kind words Brad! Being quiet is definitely huge, those older roosters are cagey and wily and not always easily fooled. There was good numbers of birds out there late season so I’m hoping for a good hatch!!
I used the boss 3/5s last winter in SD. Dog had to get both acls repaired so had to hunt without a dog. Got a limit each day without him using those shells, all except for 1 were stone dead when they hit the ground. Used the 5s in a sxs 20 gauge early season and thought they were pretty good but wow - those 3/5s impressed me. Highly recommend them if you're getting runners at all. Take care, love the videos

Thanks! I've retired him from pheasant (he's only 6), but grouse and woodcock shouldn't be an issue. He's an incredible dog and was a dream on roosters....1st class on woodcock though and that's just as fun for me. He'll have a few more years of fun in the woods. Enjoy the upcoming season!
@@joshb.6166 should be a good year for both of those I hope, I’ve seen 3 different grouse broods so far in the last 3 weeks or so, so far the nesting season has been pretty favorable it seems. Good luck this season!

Yeah, WOW! That was a whole lotta birds getting up all at once.
It shocked me at the time, all I could do was watch them all fly away, wasn’t expecting it at all.
@@timwagenmanuplandadventure8270 I know! I've had that happen where a bunch of birds get up and you don't know what to do. I had this one time where I was trying to flush one bird and a bunch of other birds got up instead and by the time I swung around they were gone and then the one I was trying to flush was gone too.
@@SimpleHunts it’s why I love bird hunting, those memories stick with ya the rest of your life! Sometimes the birds you don’t shoot are the ones ya remember the most!

Thank you, their such a beautiful bird and dang good table fare too. I like to show the hens at times, glad you like it, it’s part of the story and I really like some of the close flushes I get with them, sometimes at your feet!

Hi Steve, it's a Benelli Montefeltro. I wanted an automatic with a wood stock but were so limited it seems as left handers. Was very happy to find it. I love the gun though, honestly the best gun I've ever owned.
What choke tubes and cylinder are you using with them Boss shells? Thanks
2 3/4” #5 shortys, modified choke. I’m really happy with the knockdown power of Boss shells.

I love it when Rex is along, Rexxy’s a good boy! Before the shorthairs I had a lab named Jake, miss him to this day. #5 shot, modified choke.
What is the chock and ammo you used?
Modified choke and I switched to Boss last year. I’m shooting the 2 3/4” #5 shorty and will never go back to my old rounds. Copper plated bismuth and they hit hard!

I so enjoy watching the videos as a Pheasant hunting nut. I am up there in age but still in good shape. I realize looking at my 14 year old dog laying by the fireplace that I don't remember her best moments any more. I would like to start video taping my hunts with my new teammate. I also want to send my hunt videos to my hunting son who lives in L.A. where pheasants don't abound.
Would you give your opinion on the Go Pro you have and how you mount and/or any suggestions for equipment you would use please.
Some have said the latter versions of GP beyond 8 are heavier due to larger battery life because battery is larger.
Any help or thoughts would greatly be appreciated.

I would recommend the 8 or newer go pro, the 7 is very nice too and I shot a lot of video on it but the newer ones are a little better in my opinion. Go Pro makes a head mount and a chest mount bracket and I would recommend both, the head mount would be my first choice though. It is fun capturing those memories for sure and sharing them with your son is a great idea, if you read my channel info, I stated how much I wish had that of my dad, very cool your going to do that.
What size shot are you shooting at those late season roosters, and through what choke?
I have just started pheasant hunting, and have a hard time getting close enough to birds for a shot. Any tips?

I use the Boss 2 3/4" "shorty" #5s with a modified choke. Im a quiet hunter for the most part, Roosters in the late season especially, depending on where your hunting of course are cagey, they've been shot at and kicked around most likely for awhile so I use my collars and controller for the dogs rather then yelling at them to keep them in line. and whenever possible, because its just me and the dogs usually, I use the cover to my advantage, for example if theres a point coming off a set of cattails or thick cover I will push that cover towards that area so when the birds get to the end they'll hold or flush.

Brutal, I agree, some of those late season hunts can be dang cold, I love that late season though. I wish we could add pics to comments too.
What area you hunting me and my brother hunt Aberdeen have had a rough go of it the last few years seems like the birds are getting harder to find it’s almost as if you don’t get on them in the first or second place it makes for a long day trying to be the crowds been thinking about new areas but don’t want to just drive all over trying to find less pressure or more public hunting
Hunted all public, it is frustrating at times when it comes to getting away from the crowds though.
It is and I’m not saying that it is a bad thing it’s good to see that people are out there using the opportunity to hunt I guess my thing is just thinking about trying new area just not real sure what way to go I have looked the map over trying to find places with a lot of public but it’s a risk when you take a week off and drive 12-14 hours to hunt too find few birds what is a good zone to look at we have talked about going west to get on grouse but not sure if we can find a good number of both birds Not trying to take over anyone’s spot just trying to find a good spot to look and I love watching your dogs work and it is tuff in the cat tails 2019 was bad with all the ice fell through several times up too waist deep
@@mattcollier616 I fell thru that year 4 or 5 times too and up to my waist! The ice never really got solid that year during the season. If you end up going to Western SD just make sure you have an OnX. You should find sharpies….you’ll find pheasants too and sometimes good numbers but they seem to be more in pockets. You can also get on Huns as well. Be careful of the walk in areas out there though, a lot of that is nothing but cattle pasture.

#5s, the shorty it’s called, I’m sold on them and not going back to any other shells I’ve used in the past they hit em hard.

Kinda tells to join the fight to protect wetlands! If you haven't already.
Scott I wish everyone would join that fight. Hunters seem to carry a big part of that responsibility. It seems so easy to me for our government to do more to protect and restore wetlands and habitat of all kinds. Thank god for Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and all the others doing their part or we wouldn’t even have left what we do have. I went to an event recently, I had a picture in my phone of a sharptail grouse. I always wanted to ask random people if they knew what it is. I asked somewhere around 20 people, not 1 person knew the name of it or that it was a native bird to America, not one. 2-3 guessed ruffed grouse so at least there was that. Our national news should report on this and educate people constantly about these things rather then report on celebrities, sports, etc. Seems easy to me, yet so damn many care more about shopping malls, reality shows, etc. then they do our environment, sadly.
