Hello, I have a heart murmur! I don’t remember when I was diagnosed, but the last appointment I had with my cardiologist was when I was 11 or 12 years old and she said I should grow out of it. I’m 22 years old now and still have it. Learning more about this is interesting!

I'm part of the murmur club ^_^
I'm a 34 year old male, born with a hole in the heart (still not entirely closed), diagnosed in my mid 20's with pulmonary stenosis and aortic regurgitation. I've been monitored once a year by my primary cardiologist for the last 10 years (as well as regular visits with my GP/General Practitioner... not sure if you call them the same over there, I'm in Australia), and it seems pretty stable. He is waiting for it to get worse so he can replace both valves at the same time (or look at doing something if it significantly impacts my life).
It's always interesting to see the look on the faces of new doctors that I see from time to time when they find out that someone my age has pulmonary stenosis, it's usually met with a "Is it alright if I have a listen?". I actually participated in a Cardiology Exam a few years back, it was an interesting afternoon... even if I had to sit around shirtless for a few hours in a cold hospital, lol.

Almighty shippo 🤨😑Uhhh did you say he's waiting Arooound! For it to GEt! WoRRse!? 🤦‍♀️I feel sooo sorry for the people. You do realize that your health care practitioner knows exactly! What to do so that it WOnt! get worse right!?.However he'll let ur health deteriorate RIght! before his very own eyes, all because there's money in sickness. I'll put this nicely as I can....News Flash....Your doctor doesn't want you well sweetheart. There's no money in getting you well. Think about it. You depended on sick people ,surgeries, perscription writing, to feed you and ur family. Would you make good health for ur patients your top priority??🤔 no you wouldn't. Doctors are devils in white coats. ask him how much about you does he know without looking at your CHART. Next visit , listen at the door to hear when the nurse places the chart in the basket and sneak out and grab it. I bet the bank he or she won't no shit about ur last visit or health issues. In some cases they may if they've been ur doc for yeeears. other than that people are simply a file and ginnie pigs to use experimental drugs on which a new one gets created every month!.

Really interesting video, I'm not a native English speaker, so I didn't know right away what a heart murmur is (in Spanish we call it "soplos del corazón" or "soplos cardíacos"), and even though I'm aware of the concept and I've met people with the condition, I only knew one of the three causes that you explained, I genuinely like your videos, I hope you keep on doing more...

I have been looking through all sorts of cardiovascular terms and videos to fully understand what my situation actually is/was.
    Here's the tally:
    - Congenital Heart Disease: Ventricular Septal Defect (The hole in the heart the good doctor has been telling us about.)
    - Aortic Regurgitation: Mild-Moderate Leakage.
    - VSD was patched with one open-heart surgery.
    - My first surgery had the VSD patched with some synthetic material and part of the Aorta was replaced, but not the valve (still have the regurgitation).
    - Second open-heart surgery cleaned up the scar tissue from the first.
And all of this leaves me with a very strong murmur, which leaves me to be used as a prime example for any resident or med student who is fortunate to be in the same ER as I am when I come in.

I had two holes in my heart (which caused a heart murmur), my mum also had one or two. The doctors originally said they would close naturally, which one of them did. The second ended up being a malformation on my heart where one of the veins was connected to the wrong part so the surgery had to be done to repair & move the vein to link to the correct place. 12 years later & I lead a relatively normal life and discharged from the hospital since 2014. As far as I know the murmur is no longer there.

Hi Dr. Great explanation of different forms of a heart murmur, but I wish you had gone into more detail in the video about living with a heart murmur. You mentioned at the start about your experience hearing about it as a reason for denial into the military, which is also where I first heard the term. Are there activities people with a heart murmur shouldn’t do? I expect this depends on a case by case basis.

    • @punzelle

I've had an "innocent" or functional heart murmur all my life; new doctors always hear it, and ask me if I know I have it (yes), but I've never been advised not to do anything I wanted to because of it. I used to be a jogger and runner in my teens, 20's and 30's, and had three large babies by natural childbirth in my 30's also. I am now a senior, and I'm having an echocardiogram tomorrow because a new doctor heard the murmur. Of course, as you said, all cases are different, but if you remain otherwise healthy, it doesn't seem to adversely affect your life.

I have one and so does my mom and I know my mom was once advised against going scuba diving due to the heart murmur but I've never heard of anything else she hasn't been able to do. I think just be aware before doing something if it mentions that it could put on a strain on your heart and/or people with heart problems could be at risk, try and figure out if a heart murmur is included in those problems. i also know that mine is very minor so it may even go away as I am still quite young but so it also depends on the severity of your heart murmur. Just be aware and look out for it, ask your doctor if you're ever unsure.

Very cool video, very simply explained indeed. I wish this was common knowledge... so many time people assume that my condition is not very serious simply because they know someone else with a murmur and there doing just fine... I am going to share this for sure!
In my case the murmur was detected at birth and my parents were told that my aortic valve was not formed normally... I seen it being referred to as stenosis but also bicuspid valve so I am not entirely sure the exact term but it did not look and worked the way it was suppose to. I ended up needed surgery to replace the valve when I was 25. They did a switch with my pulmonary valve and I got a donner`s valve to replace that one (Ross procedure).
An awesome video would be how having a congenital hearth decease affect family planning , how does the hearth get affected by pregnancy? Does it need to pump more "blood per minute" to support the fetus? What type of questions a women with a murmur should ask her doctor and/or cardiologist? etc...

Hi I am new to this channel and I was diagnosed with mitral regurgitation at the age of 14 and I am 19 years old and my condition is at severe stage and soon will have an operation. I was born with it. It’s hard to live with this condition because my symptoms are worse and I can’t do others things in my daily routine. When I see other people doing fun stuff and being active at my age it’s make me upset.

Hi there! Just read your comment and had to write something back... I know it`s upsetting having friends and family around being able to do all the fun physical stuff while getting out of breath at the fourth or fifth stair , not being able to just go for a run... it is not easy. Also being young and feeling unable is hard no doubt. I guess my point just I am there too, same issues but a little older now and my operation was 7 years ago, and will likely need a new fix in a few years... I feel you... you are not alone :)
