Follow up. We can also use the pvc this summer for shade cloth is needed. I was also prepared for death of the beds and planning on next gardening journey but...."It lives"...
😂 we must have the same weatherman they say no rain for days and 5 minutes later it’s pouring down rain !!? And the temperature thing is always an issue with them Granny can predict the weather better !!
Good morning. Looks like you did ok with the cold on your garden. Our weather man apologized for calling December wrong being warmer with less snow. Erie, PA up through New York got 4-6' of snow, im glad I didn't have to deal with that. Getting some sunshine today so my solar weather station can charge up, a nice break from the gloominess. Have a great day!
Yeah 4-6' is nuts! I'm glad I don't get that. We once in 20 years will get like a foot. But usually we only get 3-4" (or less) a couple times every winter. Western WA is pretty mild. The one plus here. Well besides the beauty.
This is my first winter garden. Mostly planted collards, kale, garlic, and radishes. I'm not terribly concerned about losing radishes, but would be sad to lose the leafy greens. Is it worth the cost and effort of bed covers in zone 8? Thanks.
We've gotten down to 29 so far. Everything seems to be fine but I need to get some covers over my beds. I have a feeling we are going to get some really cold weather coming soon.
My greenhouse tomatoes gave up the ghost 3 nights ago but everything else looks good. We had a high of 40 today and expect a low of 19 overnight. NC foothills.
My ground is frozen rock solid. I have a high tunnel with some(not enough) 55 gallon water barrels for passive solar. I need at least 20 barrels total. I have 7. I am planting one 48 x 4 foot row as an experiment. This will be done today. I will also be harvesting broccoli seed and the sweet side shoots. Broccoli, kale and collards were planted very early last spring,so it'll be ok. Growing cold crops through the winter will keep me in fresh produce for the winter. My compost pile in the high tunnel was at 100°. That will be turned today. I have plenty of leaves. Maybe I'll call a local organic coffee shop to see if they will allow me to take their used coffee grounds for a nitrogen layer and make 3 or 4 more compost piles in there. That should heat the tunnel up a bit more
A tip about rebar: If you have a reciprocating saw, grinder or other means to cut it, buy the longest piece you can fit in your car and cut them yourself. It works out a bit cheaper. Here a 2 ft rebar is $4.75, 4 footer is only $5, and a 10 footer is $9. Also: wouldn't be a bad idea to get those orange safety caps for the bars if you remove the hoops. tripping and landing on one will mess you up!
My tomatoes are dead yeah which they should’ve been dead a long time ago but they had grown to almost 10 foot tall and were going out of control and still blooming and fruiting so I let them do their thing. They are definitely dead. Now my onions are loving life and so is all my lettuce! my banana plants that actually Were my favorite plants all summer long I wrapped to my chest in chicken wire and hay to keep the base warm well I didn’t cover the upper parts and they look absolutely horrible like they’re dead so I’m not sure if the the Base made it but the tops look awful 😢. I wish I would have covered them now but ya thought we had another day lol
Growing bananas, are y'all able to grow Asian persimmon? Tried these for the 1st time this year. Where I live I could possibly grow the American variety if I babied it a lot. My sweet potato and Chicago fig is the most I'm willing to baby. They will not grow out of the high tunnel. Seasons too short and cold
No in our area in eastern North Carolina if it is 28° when you go to bed at 9:30 the temperature drops until roughly 5 or 6 o’clock in the morning and then it starts to warm up about 730. I’m a vampire. We learn these things when we stay up most of the night. lol joking about the vampire part but the rest I am definitely not. Your hourly forecast on your iPhone will tell you that.
I mulched my cabbages with shredded leaves and covered them with sheets. Last night was 17 degrees. They're ok but I don't know if the heads will grow anymore.
It was like mild summer, then boom, hard frost for several days with several more to come. I'm probably only going to come out of this with 1 plant in tact 😢
This artic blast here in SC is brutal! One thing for sure is I am finding lots of micro climates on my farm with this weather.😊

That was my intention this year but never had to
We are keeping a monitoring system for our beds, the greenhouse at the animals. Amazing how different those temperatures are for each area.

Eastern NC, doing the same thing. Arugula is fine, mustard greens seem ok. Beets not sure.

Come on over to Western NC Sandy Mush, we grow rocks just like weeds.
Yeah I know you do. It has been recommended that I take a trip

I will definitely do that for the add ons. Wish you would have told me last week 😂

I know a few people that grow them in our area

That's what I was expecting. I was surprised that it stayed that low all night
Cold in Ga too only my onions and broccoli raab left, not sure about lettuce yet… 27 right now at 1120
we hit 19 last night 11 degrees colder than they said.
@ yikes I just don’t wanna lose my fig trees!

If it warms up they should just grow slow

This fall was definitely one for the record books
