What about Brussel sprouts in 6B?
Great Clip as I am in zone 8B South Carolina question where are you getting your hoops for your garden beds
Sacks are full 😂
*sigh* I wish it was in the fifties here in Person County. It's been 30s/40s during the day for the last week or so. Thanks for the reminder though, I have some cabbages I need to get going myself.
Does medical plants count?
sure if you need to start them

PLEASE DO THE SEED STARTING ON CAMERA.
Great vid! Looking forward to info on ndoor seed starting and the potato prep for seed starts. Trying potatoes this year and maybe peas.
We will get to those potatoes soon, they're a lot of fun.
I have white potatoes in my storage room that are sprouting. If you want a few notify me…I can send a picture if needed. I’m in Raleigh.
I have a mailing address in the description if you want to send a few. I am not sure they will sell them locally this year.
What is your growing zone?
I don't do zones
Thank you for the video, I am also in Coastal Carolina and wanted to know what I should start!
Hi I'm in zone 8B in the Carolinas I have to say you cannot go wrong with some lettuce Believe It or Not shocker I know and also mustard greens you can eat them as a salad or you can cook them like spinach just a light bit of a mustard taste Raw cilantro Believe It or Not also does well I couldn't get it to come up in the spring or summer but it came up late fall if you want I can give you some seeds let's stay in touch
Wishing you a very Happy New Year. It's almost time to start planting seeds here also. I start mine inside a clear tote that I can cover and that works great for me.
Jeff here. Looks like a big cold spell is coming for January. Last year it snowed 8 inches and was down to zero degrees on January 15&16th! That’s got me slowing down a little. Real cold is coming!!
I don't see anything like that coming here but I wouldnt be surprised
Hoping everyone enjoys a bountiful harvest in the upcoming season! May your hard work in the garden be rewarded with plenty of fresh, delicious produce and the joy that comes from growing your own food.❤🧤🌱
Wow! So much greenery you still have there! Great seed list! We’re in MO zone 6a. 😊👍❤️
lol I tried golden beets thinking it would taste better. Nope I said they all taste like earth lol 😂
I think it's a lie we have been told
Hi Ben, Tick tock, tick tock, I'm counting down the days to seed starting time. I'd start seeds on January 2nd, except it is my birthday, and I celebrate it by doing absolutely nothing, so January 3rd will kick off my my seed sowing session. The first batch will kick off with onions, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. It will be followed by tomatoes, peppers, basil, dill, and cilantro. I'll finish with Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Romaine Lettuce, Pak Choi, Swiss Chard and assorted flowers. Usually, around the Feb 20th, I start direct sowing seeds, but if the weather plays nice, I may get an early start. I'll start with snow peas, shelling peas, radish, and I'll fill in some gaps with assorted lettuces (Merlot, Black Seeded Simpson and whatever other seeds I have mixed in). This is also when I plant my cool weather seed starts. This morning, I cleaned out the chicken run, and spread a fresh bale of chopped straw. Three five gallon bucket loads of decayed straw mixed with chicken poop went onto the top of my compost piles. I also cleaned out the nesting boxes and lined them with straw, and cleaned out most of the bedding inside the chicken coop, and put down fresh pine shavings. There is another full five gallon bucket, mostly poop mixed with pine shavings for the compost. The chickens went nuts, digging in the straw, and exploring the nesting boxes. Maybe this will convince Trixie and Ariel to start laying? Trixie has been squatting for about a week; Ariel squatted for the first time today. The next thing on my to do list is collecting eggs. Goldie and Bella have been steadily laying six eggs a week. Oh, cleaning the chicken coop and run is by far not my favorite chore. Tossing in a few handfuls of cat litter into the bedding has drastically improved the odor.
I have beets, radishes, cabbage, broccoli, cilantro, onions, carrots, and turnips going in my green house. Also lettuce.
Sounds like you are off to a great start!
Happy Holidays! I too have never been able to order seed potatoes, onions or garlic from any of the catalogs because they ship too late for my zone/area. So frustrating to say the least. Local garden shops either sell inferior or getting away from buying big orders cause they can't sell enough to justify the cost. We want to start cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, peas. Rutabagas if we can find seeds! I plant out my beets direct-4 per sq. ft. or 3-4" apart in 2 rows 12" apart. I try to pack them in in rows. I'll cover them with frost blanket. Already feeling like I'm running behind schedule! I'd love to plant/start seeds "with you" live it will help my overwhelmed brain to focus and motivate.
Just an idea. If you can get organic potatoes and garlic at your grocery, you should be able to grow those. Onions you can grow from seed; make sure you get the right type for your area.
Yes, to watching your seed starting!
Glad to have you along!
Good morning. I'll be starting onions and peppers in January. A heat mat is a game changer for peppers. I love pickled beets my dad always canned them. Have a great day.
Since beats grow in clusters of 2 or three or even four I plant mine around 8 in apart and I start them about 4 weeks ahead of time inside
Inside of where? You start them 4 weeks before May?
Good morning ben. Glad that you're having a video today I was going to go through withdrawals
You are safe today
I would like to see the seed starting for flowers on screen. So we can see what varieties. I will tell you what, i have very low success with flowers over the years. So i would love to see what is getting starting in the cold and what not.
Noted
4:30 in the morning on the west coast and it already has 53 views.
☺️
Have you tried roasting beets with olive oil and butter that's how my wife got me to eat beets😊 keep up the good gardening my fellow gardener
I haven't tried mine. I grew some and they have been in the fridge awhile now. That sounds like a good way to do it.
I love beets, but this method transforms them into something truly delicious.
No but I will
You scared to eat them @danlowmusic
@@DanlowMusic They are super good roasted like that and put in a salad with diced apples, goat cheese and a little balsamic vinegar, they are just amazingly delicious.
beards looking Awesome. hope you had an amazing christmas.. stay warm n dry. ugly windy here in n. calif. been raining for abourt 20 hours
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thanks for all your garden info and encouragement! Days are getting longer now!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!
#1 top, ever, pumpkin pie pumpkin is "Winter Luxury Pie." Really. Fantastic for bread. muffins, pancakes too. Ever.
I will put that on the list
On eggplant, I highly recommend giving Japanese White Egg a try. It’s small. Highly productive, thin skinned, and perhaps best of all, it actuall makes sense to call it an eggplant, which can’t be said of most other varieties lol.
Merry Christmas Ben & family!
Merry Christmas to you too!
It’s all about knowing your space, your climate, and your goals-every seed is a promise of growth, so pick the ones that excite and inspire you the most!🌱❤
Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Merry Christmas Ben, I uncovered and checked my garden this morning. I have a few broccoli heads still developing, but most are ready to pick, just in time for Christmas. The cauliflower need about another week, and will certainly be ready in time for New Years. The carrots, parsnips, and beets can be harvested any time I choose. I still have chard and red cabbage growing too. Well, I made it year-round again. Seed starts for my winter/spring garden begins on January 3rd. The Grand Marshall tomato did very well for me last year. They are a very meaty tomato that is great for making tomato sauce and salsa. I suspect it was discontinued because it worked so well for me, and in my area. I'm giving its replacement, Jolene Tomato, a try next spring. If it does well, great, if not, it is back to the Ace-55. They did okay, but were producing in the hottest part of summer, so it wasn't a big harvest from them. If grown earlier, or later, they would have done much better. Alabama summers are miserable. I'm going to experiment with a few different types of zucchini next spring, Round, Italian Striped, and Golden. I'm looking for a variety that knocks my socks off. Dark Green Zucchini has been a solid performer for me, and lasts late into the season. While it didn't seem like it at the time, last year's summer squash harvest was twice the amount as previous years. I can tell by the lack of freezer space. I'm using the last of last year's rutabagas for Christmas dinner, so time to plant another crop. A few more days, and it will be time to get busy. Bella and Goldie are laying six eggs a week on average. Trixie is squatting, so should start laying any time. Ariel is being stubborn about not wanting to lay eggs. I'm not doing anything to induce egg laying. I'm just letting nature do its thing. I let them out about 7:30 AM, and they are back in the coop, locked up at 5:00 PM. So, nine and a half hours of sunlight is all they are getting, ten hours on a good day. And yet, they are still laying eggs.
Thank you, Ben! Us northerners run around in shorts and T-shirts and 43°! Have a blessed Christmas
Yeah I remember that. Y'all are crazy
Merry Christmas Ben! Lucky to be alive. My Wife and son and his friend were hit head on by a drunk driver Saturday night. She was very hamskied, she hit us at about 50 mph our Yukon was her brakes. Luckily my eife pulled off the road the best she could so the car behind us saw what was happening so he didnt plow into the back of us. It took off our entire driver side wheel and assembly. But we are only hurt a little. She got out of her car stumbling all over, spitting blood and blood pouring from her head looking like a Rob Zombie movie. My wife handed her some napkins and she said she was "fine". She failed the sobriety tests. She also spun a Tesla about 200 yards ahead of us before she traveled down our lane. We had cars in the other lane and a very small shoulder. We had an Angel eatching over us for sure. So Merry Christmas everyone and have a safe holiday season.
Dam you got lucky hope your all doing ok. Have a Merry Christmas.
@54cal54 yeah sure was scary. Our lives definitely flashed before our eyes and we all were hyperventilating after that one. My son bit his tongue a little bit, the seat belt got him good. His stomach hurts real bad the first night. Then his collarbone chest area on his left side starting hurting the next day. My Wife sprained both of her wrists griping the steering wheel, the right one more so. She's a hairstylist. She's giving it a go today because she feels she has to. My back and neck are so but not too bad. Especially considering the circumstances. Definitely buying another Yukon for the next vehicle. That Denali held up really good. If we were in my Challenger, we might not be here. We were just going back from dinner for my Son's birthday. It wasn't even that late. (7:54pm)
@54cal54 and yes Merry Christmas!
So glad it was not worse than that. Will be praying for you all. Merry Christmas to you
Man I'm sorry that happened. It truly is a blessed Christmas! I'm glad y'all are ok
Good morning. Im starting onions and peppers after the holidays. Cutting back on tomatoes this year just 10 fingers of Naples paste, rutgers slicer and coustralee beefsteak. That peanut pumpkin was a winner this year, it thrived through the heat and drought. I always let the kids pick a couple seed packs to try. Wishing you and your family a lMerryChristmas.
I wish you and your family A Merry Christmas! Thank you Ben for the knowledge. Looking forward to getting your seeds in the ground 🎁🎄⛄🧑🎄
Merry Christmas!
Great video! I grew the Lipstick peppers for the first time this year and loved them. I mixed a few in with my cayenne peppers to dry and grind into hot paprika, and they added a really nice sweetness and intense peppery flavor to balance out the heat of the cayenne. Thanks for the heads up on the seed companies. I’ve never bought from Baker Creek because the vibes were weird, but I should be able to replace the one seed I still buy from Ferry (a pelleted carrot) pretty easily with something similar from Johnny’s. On the subject of going back to classics, do you have any recommendations for beets? I’ve planted Cylindra two years in a row and had bad crops both times, so I’m thinking about just planting something like Detroit dark red, possibly with a row of Early Wonder to compare.
I have Detroit s too. And yes definitely a weird vibe. Google them and you'll find some things about them
I grow a lot of hybrids. Mainly because they do better in the desert southwest. I also have found baker creek and ferry morse to be unfavorable. I mainly use Hoss, Johnny's, Botanical interests, and Burpee.
Good call
Im always trying to get the right timing thanks for this.
I hope this helps you!
Hi :) why don’t you order from baker creek anymore? I tried looking through the podcast and old vids but I can’t find it. Thank you! Also for FMorse?
It's not labeled why I don't but it pops up in conversation from time to time. Do some googling you will find out why
Thanks for the Intel, I plan to from some of your recommendations. G90 corn definitely!!
I am going to hold you to it for the corn this year!
you're starting your seeds now? when is your last frost date?
yup and its in april
I'll plant in april too. you think now is the time to start seeds? I always thought it was too early. @sandybottomhomestead
Good morning thank you very much for your dedication on your education and informations of your videos It help me alot I hope the best for you and your family thankfully MS. Rubi
You are very welcome
Jeff here. One plant that you have not talked about much is cherry tomatoes. They are quick and produces a ton. I love cherry tomatoes! Sunsugar .
I dont grow alot of them so they are not high on my list. We focus on husk tomatoes instead
We`ve had a lot of frosts and there are still caterpillars on my greens.
they are hardy thats for sure
Butternut squash is the only "pumpkin" variety I can grow here in Louisiana and the vine borers still damage them but the vines keep rooting and producing usually. But here if we need rain...we get drought...and if I don`t need rain it floods. If we need a normal spring we get unusual cold followed by a sudden record heatwave and then an extreme Arctic blast or two in winter. Cherry tomatoes do best here. Big tomatoes do ok in the late fall. There are so many invasive pests and caterpillars now that growing a garden is usually a 90% loss. The bad drought and heatwave last year wiped out predators and my garden was infested with pests this summer. Last year I got one pot of peas and my garden was covered with several summer pea varieties. From 80 okra plants I got about 5 pods each day. I`m hoping my fruit trees and berries make up for the unpredictable weather and pests. I`ve improved my soil a lot and fall/winter gardens are showing promise. I got a decent harvest of Red Ripper peas this fall after the pests left so that`s the plan next year. I`m gonna wrap my tomatoes in row covers and cover my garden too and try that. But without stable weather I don`t know what to grow anymore.
I planted sweet potatoes after my peas, what an amazing harvest of sweet potatoes!
Thats awesome!
I'm on a budget so I am making my own little tool like you're using. Out of an old hoe.
