I made myself plant my fall garden earlier and it is going much better. Will be harvesting our first broccoli in about a week. The fall/winter garden is my favorite garden. Am in a mild climate in southern Arkansas. Hopefully we will not have an arctic blasts or polar vortexes this year--last two years we have had freak storms that really set back the winter growing.

Last year in Michigan I started my tomatoes too early inside. They grew like monsters and I ran out of room, so when the forecast was clear for a few days, I planted them out a month early. They did great! I had hoops of ladder remesh so I could put plastic over them, but never needed to. (one thing to remember, the bigger the plant, the better able to handle swings in temp.)

Hi Ben, Potatoes are weird. They are a cool season crop, but can’t take a frost, and they can’t take Alabama heat. 85F and above is a no go for them. That gives me a narrow window to get them in the ground, Feb 20th to Mar 1st. Even that is iffy. Some years, the heat comes early. Actually, I think it is most years. I can protect them from a late season frost, but not the heat. This year, I am trying something different. I am using my potato bed to grow red cabbage. After that, I’ll plant a quick crop of Malaga Radish and Tokyo Bekana Mustard. In April, or May, I’ll replace them with sweet potatoes. They love heat and humidity. After I harvest them, it will be close to planting time for red cabbage, and the cycle begins again. If it works out like I am hoping it will, that will just about give me year-round use out of that raised bed. It is a new raised bed in my garden this year, so I am still figuring out how to get the best use out of it. Four new raised beds are being used for growing broccoli and cauliflower in the fall and winter seasons. In the spring, I’ll use them for growing zucchini, lemon squash, and crookneck squash. During the peak summer heat, I can grow bush beans in them, so they are covered for maxim use. That leaves one last bed, of my new raised beds this year, to figure out. It is tucked back in the corner of my garden; it is not in the best place for sunlight. It is, however, in an ideal location for growing cucumbers. Cantaloupe do okay, but will do better where they get more sunlight. And there is definitely not enough sunlight for watermelons. So, cucumbers it is. Lettuce will probably do good there too. I need one more crop of something that can benefit from partial shade. Maybe snow peas? I’ll figure it out. Altogether, I have sixteen raised beds, and three GreenStalk towers that I can plant in, so I am not hurting for space in my garden. It only needs to feed two people. Yeah, just a bit of overkill. Oh well, that is what neighbors and chickens are for. What the chickens can't eat, the neighbors will. LOL.

Potatoes are weird. I planted 5- 5 gallon buckets of them last spring. 1 never came up. I watered it anyway when I watered the other 4. After harvesting on Labor Day (I'm in WA, it's much cooler here) I noticed the 5th bucket finally decided to grow. It's growing right now. So weird. Lol. The ones I did down in the orchard grew so much better, longer and bigger potatoes were the result. Definitely throwing them in the ground from now on.

All the cherry tomato plants died but each one produced more then my house could eat gave away sooooo many again nothing but banana chopped up in some rain water 💪🏽🤠🤙🏽 & I brought all my pepper plants inside & have under grow lights for my 1st attempt at keeping them alive all winter & producing peppers. a little slower producing but still doing very well 🫶🏽

Hi Ben, I'm getting my second fost Friday and Saturday-way late! I need it to kill off garden pests. I'm finding a lot of aphids on the underside of leaves. This time of year, I don't use sprays. As a general rule it isn't needed. Cold temperatures kills off pesky bugs and fungi. Yesterday, I harvested out my Komatsuna and processed it. The bare soil has been covered with a layer of chopped leaves. The nitrogen is depleted in this area, so I'll probably throw in a hand full granular fertilizer to give the soil a boost, and to speed the decomposition of the leaves. Today is Tatsoi day, and Saturday is harvest time for the Yellow Heart Winter Choy. I also need to take a look at how the turnips are coming along. I'm sure I have some ready to pick. The broccoli has started flowering. Yeah! The cauliflower should start flowering soon too. Only 30 days of fall left, then the winter season begins. I'm not sure what I'll still have growing, carrots, cabbage, and parsnips for sure, and maybe beets? The garden plots have been planned out, and soon it will be time to break out the grow lights, heat mats, and begin sowing seed starts for the winter and spring seasons, onions, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, chard, mustard, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, flowers, herbs, and more. (Sylacauga, AL)

The things that work for me (in zone 5a Iowa) are calendula and swamp milkweed specifically for aphids, and Brussels sprouts for cabbage moths. Hi Ben, I've tried companion planting without much success except for one thing-cilantro. Cilantro stinks, plain and simple. Planting it among tomatoes will help to keep hornworms and armyworms from the tomato plants. It works better against the hornworm moth than the armyworm. Vigilance is still essential. Spinosad helps too. With marigolds, I think they are more for soil nematodes. Deer don't like them, so planting them in a flower bed among other flowers may help to keep the deer away. I'm not sure. It isn't a big concern for me. If deer eat a few flowers, so be it. As long as they don't get to my food. I have plenty growing for the pollinators, so a few eaten flowers won't discourage them . It is raining here in Sylacauga AL; the first time since September. Yeah. It is also harvest time for me. I've harvested my first crop of Pak Choi and Swiss Chard. I'll have more Pak Choi ready in about two weeks. Also ready to harvest are Komatsuna, Tatsoi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, and turnips. The broccoli and cauliflower are coming along, and will be ready soon. The red cabbage and Napa Cabbage are forming heads. It won't be long. Also growing are beets, parsnips, and carrots. It is enough to keep me busy for the next few weeks, then it will be time to break out the heat mats and grow lights, and sow seed starts for next year's garden. As a rule, I have cold hardy plants in the ground by February 20th. This year has been weird. If I don't get snow, and it turns out to be a mild winter, I may try to get an earlier start.

I have found that cilantro helps to keep away bad bugs and I just love it.

I have the same. Its purpose for us is to raise seedlings and propagate cutting. I use heating pad for cold nights on a timer. By summer, I empty the gh. Plants do so much in the gh than on my windowsill. No regrets. My floor is also salvaged brick which is nice.

I have a small garden so I grow my sweet potatoes in 30 gallon containers. I put three slips in two containers and four in one container. We harvested 23 potatoes over two pounds, twelve 1and a half pounders and a bunch of small ones I’m saving for next years slips. Most right a the top but we also had quite a few trying to grow from the bottom! They were in containers 123 days, we live in zone 8b, I stopped watering in early August except for really dry soil
