Yess!! That is one of if not my favorite song on the album! I think the song has a really important message and sheds light on a somewhat taboo subject, which I absolutely love!
I actually interpreted this song in an essay for my college women's studies course. I think that it is about how society's institutions (church, families, the media) all enforce gender roles, which leads to over-sexualization and objectification of women. Her line “If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)/ If sex in our society (didn't tell a girl who she would be)” asserts that women in particular are still expected to follow traditional gender roles in modern society simply because of their biological sex. Marina wants a future where girls can be free of these expectations, and instead, determine their own futures. That's why she wants to "fight" what history has "given [her]". (Marina does change "girl" to "guy" in the last chorus because men are also held back by these problematic gender roles/expectations) She explains with her opening line “Nothing is provocative anymore / Even for kids” that the over-sexualization of women (and to an extent, men) has become so normal in our society that even kids are being exposed to sexual content at a young age. (Think of how some movies and TV shows use their female characters as love interests who do not actually contribute to the plot) This is harmful because kids are impressionable - girls might learn that they should behave sexually to succeed in life, and boys might learn to expect that from girls. I think Marina is saying that it is ok to be a sexual person, but it should be an individual choice and no one should feel pressured by society to act like that, especially not at a young age. In the first verse, Marina is calling for us to question TV, pop stars, our parents, and even our perception of "good" and "bad". I believe she wants us to question society by asking ourselves "Am I acting this way because I want to or because it is what society wants me to do based on my sex?" Instead of being limited by gender roles and archaic expectations, we should challenge them and not let them hold us back. Again, this is just my interpretation, and I hope it wasn't too hard to understand (I basically condensed a 5 page paper on this song into a couple paragraphs) I love Marina so much and this song is amazing!
