One of the few advantages of living in the US is that FAA requires airlines to allow any instrument that fits in the overhead to be carried on.

That's a simple solution, but for a violin it would be advisable to hold or really cushion the violin. I have a violinist friend who had his vertebrae crushed from impact when the plane suddenly dropped in flight.

@@stephenking4170 always put your violin overhead. Use other people’s backpacks to tighten it.
      Use plywood cases, like Musafia.

Frontier Airlines would not allow me to bring my violin in the cabin and said I would have to check it in luggage for a flight from Cleveland to Seattle.

Not 100% true, it's subject to many restrictions. I quickly checked it and its covered by section 403 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (Pub. L. 112-95, 49 U.S.C. §41724) regarding the carriage of musical instruments as carry-on baggage or checked baggage on commercial passenger flights operated by air carriers.
There's a final rule: «Carriers must allow passengers to stow their small musical instruments in an approved stowage area in the cabin if at the time the passenger boards the aircraft such stowage space is available. Under the rule, musical instruments as carry-on items are treated no differently from other carry-on items and the stowage space should be made available for all carry-on items on a “first come, first served” basis. Carriers are not required to give musical instruments priority over other carry-on baggage, therefore passengers traveling with musical instruments may want to buy the pre-boarding option offered by many carriers to ensure that space will be available for them to safely stow their instruments in the cabin.»
If there's no space, you'll have to transport it as checked baggage.
Ryanair's procedure gives way similar guarantees, but it just wasn't followed. Sad story, but easily avoidable if the passenger bothers to read rules beforehand.

To travel with violin with Ryanair buy a Priority for €22 right before payment.
It include 1 carry-on item + 1 under the seat bag.
Dress you coat, jacket etc. on you.
Take only an instrument case on your shoulder and under the seat bag in your arm with you.
Be on the gate right before boarding begins. Be in the middle of Priority passengers queue.
    Have manners.
We had 3 Ryanair flights in September 2024 with the violin.
Both EU, Switzerland, Norway, GB, Russia, Armenia, Georgia etc. should have the same law as in the USA: if an instrument can fit in an overhead space it should be taken as carry-on.
We all sign in the Petition, just give us a link!

@@adelkharisov so you were fortunate, well done. All it takes is one jobsworth having a bad day to decide to take it out on a passenger. Seems to be what happened here.

It must be so easy for airlines to create a policy and perhaps a price adjustment for various musical instruments that are not so large they need an extra seat. e.g. single violin = fine, cello = extra seat. After all, they accept babes and children under certain age (who often really do affect other passengers) and don't tell parents to put them in the cargo.

You're right about Air China: it has a really small cabin allowance for Economy class (not for upper classes, though). Otherwise I really like the airline, and I flew with them a few times, however I know I need to adapt my cabin luggage to the requirements (less than 5 kg). Most usually I just carry a backpack, and last May flying from Madrid and Beijing, and previous times flying from Beijing or Taoyuan they didn't weigh my luggage, but they did when I flew from Vienna (and that not having any checked-in luggage). That latter flight I mentiond actually was my first one with them, I'm glad I went past that first wrong impression.
However, I also flew quite a few times with Ryanair while I lived in Czechia, whenever I wanted to visit my family in Spain (either from Prague or from Vienna, but in this case the flight was operated by their purchased company Laudamotion, although allowances were the same). I had zero problems because I always make sure in advance about every little aspect (yes, I'm that guy always reading the TOS and stuff), but it's true rules are also strict, as you said in the video.
Regarding carrying a music instrument, and leaving aside the staff could have been more accommodating (it really depends on each specific person *and the way you ask* at that stage of the process, it's better to act dumb than clever), I know she failed to prepare in advance and be ready to show the documents to the staff at the check-in booth, since these are their actual rules and they specifically mention what you need to do when carrying a violin:
    > Sports & Music Equipment Luggage
    > What music equipment can I bring on board?
    > You can carry any music equipment with you onboard as long as it fits within your Cabin Bag allowance. For smaller music equipment like guitars or violins that exceed your cabin baggage dimensions, you can opt to pay an extra seat fare for it. To do this, you must purchase an extra flight ticket and seat. To book this extra seat, the word EXTRA must be entered as the first name, and ITEM SEAT must be entered as the surname. To purchase a seat for equipment, click here. There is no checked or cabin baggage allowance associated with the purchase of an extra seat.
    > If your equipment does not fit in your Cabin Bag allowance and you do not wish to purchase an extra seat, you can choose to check it in against payment of a fee. See our Table of Fees.
    > If your music equipment weighs more than the 20kg allowance, you will be charged at the applicable excess baggage fee rate per kilo. See our Table of Fees.

The same company did the same three months ago with a violinist who currently resides in my home town, Madrid in a fligth to Dublin. Despte she offered to pay an extra seat, they refused to let her in the flight. Of course, the company lied about the situation. The weirdest thing, is that the violinist is Sharon Corr, a member of the probably most famous band from Ireland. I think that 's ono of the keys of being a cheap flight company, they hire really dumb people.

Esther has been working hard on her career and she is really good. Watch her videos.
In the 8ies last century I was traveling around Europe and have been in almost every Airport. At that time I was responsible for the support of our European representatives who sold our nuclear physics measuring gadgets. I always had a quite bulky measurement device with me, sometimes even filled with liquid nitrogen. There was never a problem taking them with me. The unit was stored in a special corner in the cabin. Sometimes the pilot was interested and I had to report to him about the devices. This always ran into interesting discussions about nuclear physics, technology, planes, radio communication and so on. Being set back by how Esther experienced never happened to me.

    • @riangarianga
      @riangarianga วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Ryanair's rules specifically state how to travel with a violin. It appears neither she or you bother to read them beforehand, hence you run into trouble when you don't follow the process, but prefer to blame the airline for your own lack of preparation. For that reason such a complaint would reach nowhere.
A ticket is nothing more than proof of a contract regarding travel services, and it's subject to contractual conditions. Airlines always send them or show them before booking, it's on the passenger to read them.
Lots of adults never had trouble flying with Ryanair, including myself. The only reason why I'll avoid flying with them is they're «upgrading» their fleet to the Boeing 737 MAX series, a coffin on wings. I already changed flight plans with other airlines because they were scheduled on that plane series.

@@riangarianga that and their CEO made an argument that he wanted to not have a co-pilot on short haul flights. Because in his “professional” opinion they simply weren’t needed. Proving to me that he has not got the first clue about aviation. Not does he care about the safety of his crew or passengers. Just his pocket. What a scumbag. After that it was an irrevocable nope from me. And as for the “terms of carriage” ..,,.I could put into fine print that I am entitled to slap my customers in the face but just because I did that and claimed they had no recourse to complain because they signed up to it, would not make me right to do so.

    • @riangarianga
      @riangarianga 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

@@rinkydinkfretboard8737 That's why it's a highly regulated field. The terms of carriage were successfully taken to court in Spain when they didn't align with the law and regulations.
Do they breach regulations when you're about to fly? OK, pay whatever (so you fly) and make a complaint through the formal channels of the flight authorities (there are processes for that, too), you'll get your money back. You can also hire a claim service, last spring I did it with my insurance for 48 days travelling in Asia and they charged me just 7 extra €.
Making an Instagram post about it is the equivalent of children crying when they can't get what they want. She just had to buy another seat in advance (that's what their specific terms to carry violins state). As others point out in the comments, unfortunately she's already been laughed at by other violinists.
Regardless, you can think whatever of the Ryanair CEO (like any CEO ever was a professional in that field!), I also think he's a clown, but the terms are clear and are according to EU regulations. You can study whatever the thing (I infer you aren't involved in engineering), it doesn't mean you'll implement it (you need to lobby and all that; it's rare to have such power and misuse it like the EC president when a wolf killed her pony and she forced the passing of laws against wolves, something detrimental to the environment because they're still a species in risk, but she wouldn't care). Ryanair have the best security record of any airline in the EU (data you can check yourself from the authorities). Despite that, I don't want to test it again with the 737 MAX, though, but that's personal.
About 17 years ago I travelled with an electric guitar to the UK, I verified BA could take it in the cabin. 4 months later I returned, this time with EasyJet, and according to the conditions I had to check it in, so I bought a flight case and I followed the process when booking, paying the extra cost. At the airport they told me I could take it in the cabin if I wanted, even with the bigger flight case. But that was like a graceful move from them, because the flight was far from being full. Otherwise, had I not read the conditions both times, I might have been surprised at the airport.

I booked a ticket on Thai Vietjet Airlines out of Bangkok. And even after I paid for my seat, they wouldn't let me bring my violin on board. They wanted me to check my expensive violin underneath in common luggage, or else book another seat for my violin. I told them that I could carry my violin on EVERY airline in the world. But not with VietJet. I tried to get a refund, for not even using my ticket, and they wouldn't give me ANY refund. Don't ever fly this airline again.

There is such a lack of culture, lack of common sense and lack of kindness! Can't believe it. My daughter was also not allowed to go on a bus with her 300 year old violin. The driver said to put it down, on the bottom of the bus with the luggage. At the end, after we all asked the man to let the violin in the bus (including other passengers) he said the violin could sit on an empty seat with the seatbelt on. (The only one in the bus wearing a seatbelt).

I think its on the musician to check the airline's policy on musical instruments. I took a Ryanair flight one time and checked their policy so I knew I needed to buy an extra seat which I did and had no issues at all. You have never been able to take a violin as an extra piece of cabin luggage with Ryanair as far as I am aware, you have always had to buy an extra seat. Seems like Ms Abrami didn't check so its her fault. You can't blame the airline staff for enforcing the company policy.

Honestly, as a musician it’s on me to check the rules beforehand and in this case I really don’t understand how this could happen because for traveling musicians it’s well known that Ryanair has these crazy rules. Most musicians refuse to fly by Ryanair because of complications with their instrument. Sometimes it’s even part of the contract that they exclude flights by Ryanair because of that. I’m a violinist myself and go mostly by car or train but still I know about this situation and for my Ryanair flights over the last years I bought a second seat ticket. One must have been really naive not to know about these rules. In my opinion this issue could’ve been avoided. I know lots of violinists and they’re all laughing about her. For me it has a bad taste of PR for her next album.

Are people still crying about this story? Seriously? I have been flying with Ryanair on a monthly basis with my bassoon for two years now. Knowing how Ryanair operates before flying with them for the first time I went through all their regulations that are applied to music instruments. Guess what? You Must book an extra seat if the instrument doesn't fit in the everhead bin. I alwayds booked for two and guess what? I never ever had an issue. The mistake was not done by Ryanair but by her not checking if she could bring it on board on the first place. I would also say its almost common sense.. do you really think that an airline wich makes you pay just 17€ for a flight and tries to squeeze every other cash from the "extra services" would let you bring anything other than yourself on board? Give me a break!
It may not seam like it sometime but flying is a privilege and if you want to mantain that privilege you must comply with the rules and regulations and if you cannot its your problem, not the airlines'.
