I was also one of those who was heartbroken when this didn't come out, but hearing this I feel the need to put on my SC fan hat on for a moment: The Ghost is a STEALTH unit, why would you have that start in an action game. Not only does it lower hp than the others, its not meant to get into direct conflicts. Locking down vehicles and directing a nuclear launch from your silo (the latter of which the ghost who called it has to remain alive until its close to hitting or the nuke is called off) were its strengths, but you didn't build up groups and groups of ghosts. My point is, if your making a spinoff of a game and choose a unit of that game that is suited to stealth, how do you NOT know what type of game it is? Even worse, how do you look at the source material (the SC Ghost) see its ability to stealth, snipe, lockdown vehicles and think "Yeah, this is the perfect character for an action game!" This could have been such a gem. ='(
How sad that the game that Swingin' Ape Studios was developing got killed like that. Considering all the time that had already been wasted on a Starcraft Ghost game it's strange that they couldn't spend a couple of extra months porting and polishing the game for the next generation of consoles.
Thanks for the full breakdown of this Matt, I still remember previews of this game in my D2 booklet and just being excited then slowly being more jaded that nothing ever came up.
To this day, I'm still annoyed that Blizz didn't grab the Metal Arms IP when they snapped up Swingin' Ape Studios. That game had so much potential for a sequel.
I remember talking with friends ages ago about how awesome a Planetside-esque StarCraft game would be, and still think it would be pretty amazing. With Activision involved though, I fear it would somehow wind up even more crammed full of pay-to-win microtransactions than Planetside 2.
This reminds me that at one point blizzard was seen as a great developer, oh most like everything they touched was great man I do miss those days. I do remember seeing trailers for this game and thinking it could be fun but weird spin-off choice and wondering if it ever did get released.

I’m ALWAYS so amazed a studio could pay soo much for soo long for nothing… on the flip side I’m dumbfounded that there are times when studios kill themselves for months and months with no pay and no release. Game development is CRAZY
They just had to do what the Battlefront did for Star Wars - a game that dropped you into the middle of SC firefight as a grunt. It may had been a little cookie-cutter, but as recent Terminator Resistance proved - you can make a mediocre game in a good license, and become both successful and loved. I’m still waiting for this game. I have always dreamt about a Battlefront or even Battlefield style game set in SC universe. But I don’t think this will ever happen with today’s Activision-Blizzard. F2P FPS or TPS with abhorrent monetization, tops. P.S. Also, there were recent rumors about some shooter being canceled deep within the company. That very well may have been a revitalized - and killed off again - SC Ghost. Sad.
I stumbled across your vids a while back, and have been enjoying the Wha Happun series for a bit. Lately (since your avgn crossover) I've been going back and binging them all. Quality content sir.
Wait, so there was NEVER any story developed?! not even a general outline?! Then what is the use of a few completed disconnected levels, even if they looked cool? What was the point of that prequel manga and related novel?
I know great subject for Wha Happun: Syberia 3. Reading every existing review of this disaster was my guilty pleasure. Syberia 3 is victim of 8-10 years development (depend on source), lack of funds, holding onto creative vistion from 2002 and point & click era. High quality stuff for Wha Happun, really.
Both from the footage and also the concept it reminds me a lot of Command & Conquer: Renegade. Basically if you played the whole game as one of the Nod Stealth Black Hand units.
This is something that could still see light in some form. It could have been an interesting stealth-action series. There is space for that in the market, esp with Metal Gear and Splinter Cell gone.
I remember being so excited for this game when I was younger, and literally every year they would get my hopes up and then... nothing. I ended up reading the line of books in middle school though, and remember the story being great in those. However, once I was older I literally screamed when Nova showed up in Starcraft 2.
Everything about this game's development is real freaking sad, although it does got me thinking that the people who made Metal Arms gmGlitch in the System are the same people who made Overwatch.
Let's be honnest here: Nihilistic seemed to be just as incompetent as Blizzard here. They clearly lacked vision and focus. They also lacked direction. The fact that half the poeple didn't like where the game was going should be totally irrelevant. This should be for a few people to decide, and for the rest to execute.
They should have keep it stealth focused, ghost is mostly stealth unit. Besides splinter cell was huge back then. They also could release couple of different genre games. I want battlefront style starcraft game.
Can somebody please tell me where the music that starts at 6:50 is from? i am sure i know it from somewhere and that i used to really like it but i just can't remember where it's from.

I was also one of those who was heartbroken when this didn't come out, but hearing this I feel the need to put on my SC fan hat on for a moment:
The Ghost is a STEALTH unit, why would you have that start in an action game.
Even worse, how do you look at the source material (the SC Ghost) see its ability to stealth, snipe, lockdown vehicles and think "Yeah, this is the perfect character for an action game!"
This could have been such a gem. ='(
So many years... so many questions. Closure. Finally. Thank you
I knew some of it for awhile.
How sad that the game that Swingin' Ape Studios was developing got killed like that. Considering all the time that had already been wasted on a Starcraft Ghost game it's strange that they couldn't spend a couple of extra months porting and polishing the game for the next generation of consoles.
They'd probably have just ended up making this video twice as long.
forgot how good the Terran music was

I see what you did there. 😂👌
Welp. Thanks to this comment, this episode of Wha Happun is completely unavailable to an entire country.
@@autobotstarscream765 this comment isn't even true or funny.
Ashe from megaman zx advent!
Metal Arms really needs the What Happened? treatment. So underrated. It got robbed of a proper sequel.
When I worked at blockbuster in '09 we still had a preorder listing for this game and duke nukem forever
Thanks for the full breakdown of this Matt, I still remember previews of this game in my D2 booklet and just being excited then slowly being more jaded that nothing ever came up.
As always, you're the best at what you do Matt. Still amazed these come so quickly, thank you!
I want a Wha happun about Devil may cry 2
DAN TEE
Yeah that game didn't look that good
@@duce1312 It didn't just look bad, it WAS BAD. The game was not fun to play at all.
I wish it was leaked in a unfinished somehow. Would love to see what it would’ve look like.
it's out sooner than i thought
POST UPDATE: Game was leaked online so its no longer a ghost! Part 2 when?
This Is my favorite series I discovered this year. thank you
I remember when Gears of War came out and all i could think at first was that it would have made for a really good action Starcraft game.
To this day, I'm still annoyed that Blizz didn't grab the Metal Arms IP when they snapped up Swingin' Ape Studios. That game had so much potential for a sequel.
I'd become an indie developer and just make my own game to play something that sounds as awesome as Ghost was made out to become.
I remember talking with friends ages ago about how awesome a Planetside-esque StarCraft game would be, and still think it would be pretty amazing. With Activision involved though, I fear it would somehow wind up even more crammed full of pay-to-win microtransactions than Planetside 2.
I love how you keep churning out these fascinating videos. I think I might have to break my patreon cherry.
This reminds me that at one point blizzard was seen as a great developer, oh most like everything they touched was great man I do miss those days.
I do remember seeing trailers for this game and thinking it could be fun but weird spin-off choice and wondering if it ever did get released.
Before the shoehorning of identity politics and cough cough riots in hk.
@@fattiger6957 WoW kicked warcraft lore off a cliff, never get how people love early wow murdering wc3 characters yet shit on the interesting lore like pandaria being developed
Every time I see Brink, I think of Angry Joe's skit in his review. Those Faces...
I loved metal arms glitch in the system. I got a case of the member-berries now. Thank you!
Sad.
I remember when my mom preordered this game for my birthday! I'm still waiting for it to come out.
Man I actually had Ghost pre ordered back then.
You know Widowmaker from Overwatch? Ok. You know Nova? You feeling old yet?
Have you done an episode on an entire console, yet? Because I think the Philips CD-i would be a good candidate.
3DO's thing as well!
With the name "Starcraft Ghost" one would think they would've stuck with stealth gameplay
I am curious why the gaming world at large is still sleeping on that tried and true Gex ip.
Let be honest here, if there was a new Gex game made today it probably would suck really bad.
I'm old enough to remember being hyped for this game and saddened when it got axed.
After one year, we all know which episode of "What Happened" should be...
Keep it up Matty boy!
Watching this and seeing the near exact same parallels with the Goblins: Animated pilot:
-Complete radio silence
-"Taking time to perfect everything."
I wish we lived in the timeline where Ghost was released.
I love the use of the Simpsons in every episode you make. Please don't stop.
They should have keep it stealth focused, ghost is mostly stealth unit.
Besides splinter cell was huge back then.
They also could release couple of different genre games.
I want battlefront style starcraft game.
2:45 a wha happun on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines would be very interesting btw
Can somebody please tell me where the music that starts at 6:50 is from? i am sure i know it from somewhere and that i used to really like it but i just can't remember where it's from.
Aw man, I remember being so hyped about this game when I first read about it on EGM back in the day. Then all the constant delays killed all hype, to the point that when it was cancelled I barely remembered it was a thing.
I seen the thumbnail. I read the title. I let out a literal sigh and then a sound of sadness.
Another awesome video, Matt~! Not to be bugging you, but may I ask if you plan on ever doing Sonic Chronicles? It's a game i really think deserves a chance on the spotlight over it's developmental history soon. Obviously you got other games on the backlog, but would it be possible Sonic Chronicles would be a option? Otherwise, keep up your good work, and I can't wait to watch more of your videos~!
