David Salle (2) 'Tree of Life' series is an expression of the beauty of life

David Salle wants to convey that life is wonderful and beautiful through his Tree of Life series. Initially, three years ago, he concentrated on imagery and facial expressions in his paintings. However, he later expanded his interest to include color, line, and color schemes.
Peter Arno, the legendary illustrator who made The New Yorker famous, inspired his approach to portraying people in this series. Arno's drawings boast intricate details with a minimalistic touch, bringing the figures to life through their expressions, postures, and attire. Each figure is endowed with a unique narrative, lending Arno's caricatures a sense of both human drama and contemporary elegance. It is for this reason that David Salle used Arno-style caricatures to convey the story in his Tree of Life series, as he believed that the elements of humor were sophisticated enough to translate seamlessly onto canvas.
Salle considered finding Arno's paintings as a stroke of luck. His light-hearted caricatures and abstract components in split-screen paintings portray the interconnections between art and life.
