Katy discusses being locked in the house for 30 years, the power dynamics of the group and the abuse she suffered at the hands of cult members.

This is an amazing case for nature vs nurture. Spent nearly 30 years being taught that cruelty is the norm and still had so much kindness in her heart. I wish her nothing but the best in her future what an inspiration 💓

You can still hear the tremor in her voice reliving this CPTSD. What I truly wish for her, if she hasn't already, is to be given THE BEST trauma therapy, psychiatrist and psychologist to helo her bury this horror story. No fee. Private medic. And absent of a waiting time. She deserves this. For the sake of leading a whole life. 💜
You’re so so obviously right it should go without saying… but the NHS waiting lists are huge! I experienced serial sa and physical abuse by dad known to mum and was isolated from school. I had to wait 3.5 years for regular therapy and lost a promised place in a therapeutic community last minute because of funding - on that basis I don’t hold out huge hopes in Katy’s case
It’s the UK, they have the NHS.
I had a chance to interview Katy for my channel and I am glad I contacted her. She is one of the nicest person I have ever met, in addition she is so brilliant.

She’s come SUCH a long way. I’m just so proud of her. I remember hearing her after she was freed (not sure on how soon after) and her language skills were very much affected. She’s composed. Clearly done exception self growth and a lot of work on language and everything else. Just so happy to see this. I really hope she now gets to move on and up and live the life she deserves.
I wish this woman nothing but the best for the remainder of her life. What monsters they must have been.

I remember watching a documentary on television about this cult. She is so extraordinarily soft spoken and also strong considering that she’s here to tell us her story

what a sweet angel. sending her so, so much love and strength, i hope she continues to heal from the pain and rawness of experiencing the world anew after decades imprisoned… seems impossible to grasp to me, but i am in awe of her goodness, it is so clear and seeps through her every word

Very brave. At least she had a team of two, herself and somebody else to reason out the dilemma being wrong to be living that way and for the need of freedom.

This brought me to tears and not just because of the terrible things that had been done to her but because she was able to remain good and decent and her heart remained pure in spite of it all. Someone else said in the comments above this is a perfect case and argument against the whole nature versus nurture. This baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult was physically, emotionally and psychologically abused and yet through it all she never gave in to the dark side. She is the light. I wish I could meet her I have such pure love and respect for someone who has been through so much. I wish I could know how she is doing now … if she is coping and handling life… does she have friends a husband or family now ..? I pray she is doing well. God bless her always.

My parents were generic Mormon for a long time, but as the religious narcissists age, their paranoia really DOES out itself. Everyone is listening in/spying on them, but 'no one listens' to them; they're the 'chosen' but all they whine about is their lack of entitlements (to things a rational human knows not to expect from life).

Brutal story and self portrait inflicted upon this beautiful young woman, which was never her fault in the first place ! Really I think her parents should be put in jail and her grandparents, the same and her brother right there with him. They are sick people and we need to stay away from those kind of people and be kept away from their violence and mental instability..

Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Yet, forgiveness doesn't mean that what the other person did was okay and it doesn't mean that you have to trust them or even like them. God helped me, and continues to help me forgive.

I like these videos about cults because they are really similar to religions. Religions are cults but people will go against that idea, imagine you saw a documentary of a cult where they circumcised children because of some weird reason like it promotes good health (first of all, most beliefs in cultures, key word being cult, have no logic behind it, its just something that was passed down for generations, there is no science to it) We would still see that its completely wrong and unacceptable but that same person will ignore it if it was in their own culture.
I am happy to study philosophy at university m. It healed my mind from so much nonsense in years to come. I see dangers like this in just slightest hints of other people acting. There is too many nutters out there which like to manipulate others to gain advantages.

It is very disturbing the fact that women follow these type of men and submit to them. I am only sorry for kids who are born in such arrangements, like the woman in this interview, but I am absolutely not sorry for the women that willingly decide to go after such men. They are very stupid and do deserve what comes after them.

This woman is very brave. I’m glad she was able to get out, but when her abuser was sent to prison….i would think she would be happy and relieved. Her comment that she didn’t like prison for him because that’s what she was in defies logic to me. He was an abuser….period. He didn’t speak do enough time in jail in my opinion.

Just to say in response to two comments that used this tragic story to try and take a jibe at Marxist theory: all kinds of ideologies can be utilised by dodgy people in order to allow them to establish cult-like organisations. Look at how many cults claim to be the word of Abrahamic religions (i.e. Christian cults). One of the most powerful and notorious cults in the world features an ideology based on science fiction literature (Scientology). In fact, I would put money on the idea that Marxist ideas were hardly common at all amongst cults. Anyone who has actually bothered to read Marxist theory will know that the insane ideas of this man run completely contrary to the ideas formulated by Marx, Engels and others.
