To think that the songwriters said “No” to John recording this but he went ahead and recorded it anyway (getting full permission afterward) is still absolutely mind blowing, especially as it became such an iconic Aussie song to this day almost 40 years later!

He hits those notes at full power at 70 years old at the Fire Fight concert with Queen 2 years ago. He gave it everything and nailed it at that concert. He was out of breath for a little bit after which is understandable, but he gave it everything and smashed it better than most in their prime can hit. He is a freak of nature.

I was there at the Sydney Cricket Ground and saw it live. Absolutely phenomenal atmosphere. The reason Farnsey and Coldplay were on so early in the show is because Coldplay were touring Oz at the time and volunteered their services for the bushfire relief concert and had to fly to Melbourne to do their own show that evening so good on 'em for for that.

On the US market, John once said (like in the early 1990s) that he knew if he wanted to make it big in the States he would have to live there, and he liked living in Australia, and was happy with the level of success he had there, so chose not to make that move.

Perhaps that decision is what enabled him to be the grounded, lovely, content and happy family man that he is. I love watching the clips from his shows. He's not a singer who has gone on stage to just perform, he's s artist who is having a party and wsnts everyone to join in and have a bloody good time.

Farnsy and this song are so powerful that kids as young as 8/9 to elders well into their 80s/90's, know every lyrics to this song. I'll never forget going to my first Farnham concert and being amazed that as a 20 something year old, I wasn't the youngest person there. Thank the writers for such a powerful songs with brilliant lyrics! You’re The Voice was written by four British people (Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder and Chris Thompson) on the day of a protest March for nuclear disarmament that was held in London’s Hyde Park on 25th October 1985 but Thompson slept in so they all wrote the song while watching the protest on TV 😀

Sound Relief was a charity gig put together in very short time and all the local artists and any international artists in Australia donated their time to raise money for victims of the Victorian and New South Wales Bush fires the took hundreds of lives and wiped whole towns of the map, and why these 2 states were burning, Queensland was drowning.
There was 80,000 at the MCG in Melbourne and 50,000 at the SCG in Sydney, alternating sets between the venues that were also telecast to the other venue. 2 bands played both Melbourne and Sydney

No, no Oprah Winfrey or Ellen. They were Aussie centric really. Both of them did venture overseas. John did sing in America with Little River Band, but he was happiest at home . Barnsey too. And weren't we the lucky ones eh? His live concerts were unbelievable. When we finally let the poor bastard go home after all the encores, there was the happiest vibe walking home out of arena to get to our cars or public transport. Everyone was on a high. I can imagine Farnsey and his band having so much adrenaline that would not have been able to sleep properly. He was an electric performer. You couldn't quite believe what you were hearing. Nowadays it would be all mixed and pitched by electronic devices, back then it wasn't, it was just him. His voice is a gift to us downunder and we still love the big Dag.

John went to the states with Little River Band... but came home when that tenure ended... A lot of LRB fans wanted their original singer (Glenn Shorrock) back as they deemed John too much of a 'fussy' singer (Glenn tended to sing very 'straight' to fit in with the bands harmonies... unlike Johns backing singers who have perfected singing 'around' Johns runs.... ) Jimmy formed his own band after Cold Chisel ended and chose American players to tour the US with... he came home too. His single Lay down your guns did quite well over there and I'm sure a fair few people knew of and supported Chisel over the years so probably knew Jimmy's name when he went solo at first.

Have enjoyed your reactions to his songs especially " Your the Voice" I think he has visited America as a solo artist, I remember reading he was mistakenly introduced as Jack Phantom at a club in the U.S. so he started using the name Whispering Jack Phantom.
Fun fact he was the only Australian Artist to have a number one record over 5 consecutive decades.

John only has gum when he's not 100% well , a way to keep voice lubricated when had cold/sore throat there is a Germany concert in Whispering Jack era , when relentless touring late 80s when not want to disappoint and never cancel , can see the gum a lot and hear a bit of extra raspiness in the voice

John was in the usa when he sang with Little River Band. But most Americans had no idea who he was. I was a Huge LRB fan growing up but didnt know any of their names. I just remember a different lead singer and i loved his songs. Had no idea MANY years later, i would discover John in a reaction video of LRB. I was like, "Hey!!" Played the recorded version of "Reminiscing".. john performed that song. Glenn Shorrock sang it.

There are two uploads of this performance on YT. One has better audio, the other (this one) has the extended intro.
This was for the 2009 Sound Relief concert, a fundraiser in the aftermath of some serious bushfires in Sydney.
I absolutely love the sing along with Chris Martin. John shifts right down to first gear, and whispers along to give Chris a chance to be heard, then goes straight back up into the Farnham stratosphere to finish it off.
Jimmy and Cold Chisel tried to break America, record execs stuffed them around, hence 'You got Nothing I Want'.
American radio couldn't figure out how to pigeon hole Farnham into a genre, he had one or two songs with some minor chart success but that's it. In the end he chose family over trying to relentlessly break the American market, and I think that's something that a lot of people here really value and appreciate about him.
This isn't John's only performance with international superstars. He recorded 'We Will Rock You' with Queen for the London Olympics, and big fan that he is, Bryan May performed this very song with John at another bushfire relief concert, right at the start of the pandemic. Celine Dion has also performed this song on tour in Australia, and John joined her as a surprise in a concert a few years back. Heart also covered this song and some chart success with it.

John Farnham is an international star, he was in musicals and performed in the U K, and I think, around Europe. I don’t know about America but the world is so much bigger than just the USA. Coldplay is an English band who are popular and perform all over the world. Jimmy Barney’s is Scottish/Australian and has also performed internationally, please stop dismissing countries that aren’t America.

From memory, this was in about 2009. John had had a couple of years off performing and (I think) he did a tour late in 2009 for the first time in around 5 years. I remember being so so excited as it was then the first time I was able to see John live after we all thought he had retired from performing. So his voice was a little rusty (by his standards) with Coldplay. I’d say his voice sounds even better 10 years after this performance. I’m sure others may correct me if I’m wrong 😂

John could've had or did have a tour in America, if I'm not mistaken, but HE chose to go back to Australia to be with his wife & kids! THAT is the main reason, other than his incredible voice & personality, that I love & respect him more than any other singer!😊 By the way, John was about 60 in this video. If you'll notice, there are no stupid cell phones in the crowd, only a few cameras! 😄

John belts the song out. Chris Martin sings his part insipidly and John has to basically whisper to ensure he doesnt totally drown him out. Then John gets straight back into it and blows everyone away.

John Farnham and Cold Chisel tried to break into the US market in the 80s but they didn't have a lot of support from record labels etc. The Sound Relief concert was in 2009, when John was 60. Still had a killer voice! I love how you go all fanboy when you hear Australia's best vocalist ☺
