I loved this video! I sell second hand and vintage goods online and have noticed a number of similar resellers running live auctions via Whatnot. One of the reasons I sell second hand is I think it’s more sustainable and cheaper. However if you impulse buy a load of second hand items you don’t need that could still create debt and waste. I am uncomfortable with the whole concept of live shopping, and this video helped crystallise my thoughts. I had no idea just how crazy it was in China! That’s a whole other level of madness 😮
thank you for watching and sharing your perspective as a secondhand seller! totally agreed on your thoughts around secondhand being more sustainable but not great when impulse buying tons of it!
So i thankfully haven't been sucked into massive hauls on amazon/temu ect or live shopping on tiktok. However when my friend did, I found that removing her card or not saving it helped so much. When you have to get out your card and type everything in or even take a picture it makes you pause and think "Do i even want this". So nowadays she never saved her card anywhere and she's made far less impulse purchases than she had previously.
I don't know if you have ever done a video on Title Loans and how predatory those companies are, but if you haven't, please do! Title loan companies interest rates can easily been as high as 588%!
Its crazy this has only now become a trending topic to talk about. I used to follow a chinese online shop and I remember them steaming live shopping on facebook back in 2016. Its definitely been amplified in China since the job market has suffered post covid
Some time ago I set a goal for myself to limit online shopping. I noticed how looking for the cheapest deal took way to much energy and saved me 5€ max, so I went back to getting all essentials offline. I feel that online shopping is, like you say, a lot of impulse buying and I don’t like it. It’s different if I got it on a lovely trip with friends and while i don’t need it, it reminds me of that trip. Live online shopping in addition to the impulse to me seem almost like gambling, especially with limited quantities and I fear it’s part of the concept. That’s why I stay away from it.
Joke's on them. My attention span is too short that I could ever stay long enough on one of these live shopping channel. Already got tired just watching the example clips.
I’ve been doing the 72hr rule, before buying something. It’s really helpful to see how much of the products I try to buy just because they flashed crossed my screen.
I keep an emergency fund but the problem is it gets drained by major expenses. Last time it was my car, which I was still paying off, having major issues not worth fixing (including the transmission dying) so I had to dump a bunch of money into the next car. Now my emergency fund is severely drained and it will take probably a year to get it back up. Then some other emergency will no doubt arise. It's never ending.
Of course I know about shopping on Tv but wow, I've never seen/heard of this shopping way on TikTok, that really is something totally different! Seriously, I'm not sure personally why people enjoy them. They seem to be very fast, very loud and very flashy.
The only good part of this, for me, is that as someone with AuDHD I get overwhelmed at the drop of a hat, and these types of videos will literally turn me off instantly. Fast talking, loud noises, fast movements, over-bright colours... they literally might as well be spraying water in my face going "no, no no!!" until I run.
This is fascinating! I had no idea this livestream shopping content existed. I actually work for HSN and my job is to set up the product displays, put them out & swap the displays during the live show. I wonder if the higher-ups at HSN know about this TikTok stream shopping and if they’d ever give it a try. I have so many ideas for new things we could try but I’m such a low level employee that I don’t even know who to pitch them to.
Put it in writing, send it in an email to at least 5 people who work separately but have meetings together. That way, you might at least get some credit for your ideas.
Will never install Tiktok, or buy from a livestream. It's not appealing to me at all. I prefer to physically see and touch an item, try it on, check quality and think things over first. -a millennial
I hope you never find the strength to stop yourself from online scrolling, because that’s probably how you get a lot of ideas for your awesome videos! 😊
I’ve been really trying to look at things I like and say ‘I’m so glad this exists’ and move on. With craft materials it’s so much harder, especially fabric collections, jigsaw releases and weekly diamond painting drops. I’ve had to unfollow many of the companies I love because I just can’t resist sometimes and it takes over. I even curbed my ebook impulse shopping by subscribing to kindle unlimited and using Libby. I get the feeling of shopping without actually spending more than the subscription fee and the one time bus fare to activate my Libby account.
I think the whole aspect of live shopping is very cool, but the caviat (I might have spelled that wrong) is it feeds into the FOMO culture we are now living in. The sellers are super excited about the producers, they are talking fast, and loud, they interact with the consumer. The bad part of the live shopping is the sellers have a genius way of making the consumer believe they are going to miss out on a great bargain if they don’t buy now. Kind of like when Black Friday shopping gears up. Tons of ads telling you of the latest and greatest deal, telling the consumer you’ll never get these deals or prices again if you don’t shop now. The one rule my mother taught me growing up is if I truly felt like I wanted or needed something to wait a week. If at the end of the week I still felt the same, it is safe for me to go ahead and buy it, but if it happens to be that I forgot about said item I truly didn’t want or need it. It was an impulse buy. Live your content;
In addition to talking about third spaces I would love to hear you talk about how shopping has consumed so much of what we do now. Hobbies, family outings, traveling. It seems like so much of going out of your house now revolves around shopping. What are the alternatives? How did it get this way? My sister and I want to take a trip but all the places she suggested the only things were eat and shop while we're there. Why travel when I can eat and shop where I live?
I agree, we should prepare ourselves to handle not falling into these things. Though we ourselves are not largely at fault. Even the smartest and brightest of us can get sucked into TikTok doomscrolling. It might be hard to understand, but these companies are fighting for your attention. I don't know who coined this word, but I feel like "Attention Economy" is the right way to describe it. We as individuals need to talk about this, so that legeslation can get up to speed with this landscape. Our governments need to keep us safe, that is one of their jobs. The reason I deleted TH-cam from my phone, the reason I never installed TikTok, and the reason why I disable TH-cam shorts are all the same. I don't want to get sucked into it. These are things you have control over. Don't let them get into your life. Its just like (online) privacy, the less information you give, the more secure you are. To be fair, I am still very much addicted to TH-cam on desktop, but I am working on improving that. Nobody is perfect, and it is okey to have a crutch, but realize that these crutches might not have your best intrests in mind.
I have some issues with impulse buying, but the main things I get are also things I can't wait on if I want a deal because that's how secondhand markets can be sometimes. In that case, I'd say know the things you want and what you're willing to pay beforehand. Sometimes I'll pass on a thing at $20, but know that if I ever catch it for $10, that's a price I'm willing to pay.
The popularity of mindless online shopping also substantiates my thought that the outrage about global warming is all superficial. While I'm not saying climate change isn't happening, I do believe people are faux-outraged at climate change, because otherwise, they would drastically decrease their consumption of fast fashion and cheap goods.
I‘ve never seen a live shopping stream, but I sometimes impulse shop. Most of the time it’s stuff for my son. Toys or clothes mostly. I‘m pretty minimalistic when it comes to myself, but when it comes to my son I sometimes can’t control myself. Last example: Nerf guns. He wanted one for quite sometime, but now I bought 4 😅
I do worry that this kind of sales tactic is far more predatory for neurodivergent people. I (not neurodivergent, afaik) have the self-control to save items to a tab on my browser and maybe go back to them later, but my friend who is autistic and has ADHD is CONSTANTLY buying and draining his savings through live shopping, Amazon deals, and TikTok shop. And none of it is stuff he needs. NERF guns, toy lightsabers, kitchen gadgets that don't work, stuff to go in his car that never actually goes in his car. His parents have had to take over paying his rent because he would spend it otherwise. Another friend spent nearly $1000 on clothing in a 'flash sale' on Instagram live, when already $20k in debt. I'd flown from London to the east coast of the US to visit her, and she complained the entire time that she was too broke to take me places, and had to work overtime instead of spending time with me, but she spent well over $2k on clothes, psychic readings, tarot readings and Loungefly handbags in the time I was there, all of it on various lives and flash sales. Again, she is neurodivergent. (disclaimer, I am not a psychologist)
I think it varies from person to person, not all neurodivergent people have trouble controlling shopping impulses or are even attracted to useless stuff. I have a friend with autism that doesn't show any interest in acquiring possessions that don't fulfill a basic need, so if his shoes are extremely worn down, but still theres a thin layer of sole between his foot and the ground, he'll refuse to buy new shoes and refuse gifted shoes, because his still work. He isn't stingy and he buys high quality things because he wants his stuff to last.
Being AUDHD myself I can see how someone similar would fall into the rabbit hole. We get dopamine from buying cool new things. I’ve only bought one thing (a purse) from a live 2 years ago but that theory is interesting for sure.
I can see what you’re saying because I know some of my friends with adhd would struggle with this but for me specifically, I’m lucky. The overwhelming nature of these videos (fast talking, lots of comments and text everywhere and colourful graphics) makes it so I physically cannot watch them. It’s one of the few benefits of sensory processing disorder.
@@lonelywife7468 oh completely! My cousin is also autistic and he's very minimalist- his money goes on luxury holidays and nights out with friends. Great video! I'm a big comic book guy & live selling is killing the comic book collector industry. Books that have a value of about let's say $200 can suddenly go on Instagram Live or what not for $500 or $600 because it's just a bid between people. I've seen at some of the conventions I've gone to recently people will just put those books at a huge mark up because they know that that's what they can get for them if they were to take it to auction online. For me, personally, I'm not much of a collector of those kinds of comics too much, but it is hurting comic bookstores and the industry in general.
At some point some of these over consumption trends need to simply be labeled as bad and unnecessary. I dont mean to sound like a boomer but not everything has a positive side to it, this is crazy
OK I don't want to defend it because it's over consumption and all. HOWEVER the most famous of those ladies kinda have a flow. Sure she's selling cheap garbage but there's an almost comedic sense to her videos that I kinda respect. Also not on topic but with your videos I do believe I've been able to consume way less stuffs over the month. Even as I'm stuck in bed with a broken leg right now so thank you.

Live shopping is completely stupid. Waste of time, waste of money and a waste of life. Its a pity when a human has no other things to do but rather than watch a live stream and buy stuff spontaneously. Online shopping is already aggressive enough, and there is absolutely no need in a "fun" live shopping. To avoid spontaneous shopping, I save items I want to buy in notes and I WAIT for months and months to buy it. As a result, I end up NOT buying most of the stuff I saved! As an example, I want a mixer machine for smoothies and cream soups. Its in my notes, and there is even a discount now for the mixer that I want. 6 months has passed, and I haven't bought it yet, constantly postponing it to the next months, because I dont go over the monthly budget. If I would buy stuff whenever I want, my house would become a mess and the wallet empty. I wouldn't have money for the hiking trips and healthy food I truly need and enjoy. People, we are not monkeys. We CAN and should control ourselves. If not, our lives and money will be washed out into the wallets of corporations. And IT IS a big problem for a human, in my opinions.

For me personally breaking free from the consumption lifestyle (14 years and counting) to a minimalistic lifestyle has been the best decision ive ever made and it gives me more flexibility to understand the final few words from the same song the Grand Illusion Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on earth's this spell we're under We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are!

I've seen some people say that you should pay off credit before saving anything but I've come to realise that I'm better off doing a bit of both so that I'm less likely to use credit for something through instant access saving, once I use the card for something I'm so much more likely to keep using it because it's on my mind
it’s called discipline. i exclusively use my CC (i get points) but i make sure i only buy what i can afford. treat your CC like a debit card and it will change your mindset
love that mindset! ^^
@@ToriUptown I am autistic and ADHD, and was never taught how to manage money, with the way Im approaching things now I am actually making progress lowering my debt and spending, no amount of discipline can get me out of burnout so this is just what is working for me
I think that advice tries to avoid high interest rates on unpaid credit card debt. As long as it's there it keeps piling up.
It reminds me of when I was in secondary school and one of my teachers would just online shop on the projector instead of doing class and ask us our opinions (and yes he unfortunately had a shopping addiction)
oh wow :o that's crazy
Oh, thats the first time i hear men having shopping addiction
@@gethina-come7885 my neighbor has a shopping addiction he gets 2 to 3 packages everyday they even pile up outside his house
Did he get fired?

Please talk about third spaces. The “ Not just Bikes” channel
Covered it and it needs more discussion.
Title loan companies interest rates can easily been as high as 588%!
oooh such a good idea! adding that to my topic inspiration list, thank you!
I am so glad I found your channel!
Its crazy this has only now become a trending topic to talk about. I used to follow a chinese online shop and I remember them steaming live shopping on facebook back in 2016. Its definitely been amplified in China since the job market has suffered post covid
Those rooms at 1:05 are literally straight outta Lookism
Live infomercial is back and it's in the form of TikTok lives? Truly a time to be alive
Auctioneers can go to auctioneer school - really! They learn everything about the craft.
woah! who knew that’s so neat!
Joke's on them. My attention span is too short that I could ever stay long enough on one of these live shopping channel. Already got tired just watching the example clips.
The have sudden death 10 second auctions for you ! 😅
Does anyone else want Cara to write a "finance made easy" book? That's the one and only thing I would purchase without thinking. ❤
SAME. all the tiktok live shit automatically turns me away bc it’s way too much, i just find it an instant repellent
hahaha it's true! i do love (and hate) my scrolling - also thank you!!
I think the whole aspect of live shopping is very cool, but the caviat (I might have spelled that wrong) is it feeds into the FOMO culture we are now living in. The sellers are super excited about the producers, they are talking fast, and loud, they interact with the consumer. The bad part of the live shopping is the sellers have a genius way of making the consumer believe they are going to miss out on a great bargain if they don’t buy now. Kind of like when Black Friday shopping gears up. Tons of ads telling you of the latest and greatest deal, telling the consumer you’ll never get these deals or prices again if you don’t shop now. The one rule my mother taught me growing up is if I truly felt like I wanted or needed something to wait a week. If at the end of the week I still felt the same, it is safe for me to go ahead and buy it, but if it happens to be that I forgot about said item I truly didn’t want or need it. It was an impulse buy. Live your content;
Why does it have to be fast fashion cloths? Why not used books?
I did not know this even existed and I feel like I am now doing something right lol
And another cousin with autism who saves all his money for plants 😂 he has the GREENEST of thumbs, that kid doesn't even know how good he is.
But other autistic/neurodivergent relatives- including my mum- definitely struggle to resist the shopping impulses, to a point where it's harmful.
I think you would enjoy the book The Day The World Stops Shopping if you haven't ready it already!
I think more people need to ask themselves "Why would I buy this?"
1:00 thought I would translate the Vietnamese text for fun
"Chinese livestreams are something different"
I have a credit card that it's only purpose is for when i need to take my car in. I can legit only use it at the mechanic i go to it's from the mechanic company so i legit couldn't use it elsewhere if i wanted to and as someone who struggles financially it's a life saver when i get a flat or need to take the car in.
Thank you for also talking about the emotional/psychological drivers that feed into this. It's so widespread and the fact that it is feels so bleak and hopeless and sad
(sorry to be a downer 😞)
I rewatched the clip of the lady with orange boxes like 10 times 😵💫
I need to write a research paper about this topic and I wish my professor hadn't banned us from referencing TH-cam!
Like an auction, i think its feeding into a desire to be at a bazaar, where purchasing is a social act. I also think since it feels like an auction, you feel like you 'won' when you buy it 😂
Great video 💯👏
all the data that was gathered from online gambling is ruining everything
this is so dystopian
Yeah, the way she just looks with a frozen face into the camera and then slides off a piece of clothing or something else is mesmerizing.
Still ain't gonna buy that, thank you very much.
RIP skymall 😭
The great thing about these live shopping streams is they’re maddeningly cringe. It’s so easy to avoid them because they aren’t sneaky about it.
I do the 24 hour rule to wait to see if I still want it, and now I have tons of bookmarks of stuff I wanted to buy but never did lol
You have to practice your auction voice speed, accuracy, and clarity.
I see that Amazon live feed sometimes on my Amazon app on my gaming pc. I just laugh because a lot of stuff they sell is just not what I want anyway.
WHATNOT omg the amount of money I've spent on there AAHHHH!
I never knew of live shopping before this video 😅
7:04 I don't know what third spaces are so i would appreciate a video, at some point
I dont mean to sound like a boomer but not everything has a positive side to it, this is crazy
wow, this is crazy and sad that humans have went backwards!
I never bought something on live selling because I’m scared 😂
OK I don't want to defend it because it's over consumption and all. HOWEVER the most famous of those ladies kinda have a flow. Sure she's selling cheap garbage but there's an almost comedic sense to her videos that I kinda respect.
Also not on topic but with your videos I do believe I've been able to consume way less stuffs over the month. Even as I'm stuck in bed with a broken leg right now so thank you.
It’s 100% a scam. Whatnot iś a great example. They make bidding so easy that you don’t think at all until you’ve spent the money. eBay iś bad too, but at least they have a fail safe that makes you stop and think before spending. It’s scary how easy it iś to lose your money online.
Have you read Stolen Focus by Johann Hari? It has some really interesting ideas about why we struggle to pay attention.❤
I haven't read that book but I'll add it to my personal recommendations list! thanks :)
I’m a live seller. I started two months ago with my moms jewelry company. Ask me anything:
Online live shopping holds no interest to me fortunately. Though FOMO on short period preorders... well thatbis a different thing 😢😅
Great video, you look very good btw 🥰
The song the Grand Illusion comes to mind with these words
But don't be fooled by the radio The TV or the magazines They show you photographs of how your life should be But they're just someone else's fantasy
The illusion of consumerism is all a ego driven fantasy, in short egonomics drive economics and we've been trained well with this mindset since birth that the only reason we are here is to consume without a thought about where things come from nor care where they go to die.
For me personally breaking free from the consumption lifestyle (14 years and counting) to a minimalistic lifestyle has been the best decision ive ever made and it gives me more flexibility to understand the final few words from the same song the Grand Illusion
Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on earth's this spell we're under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are!
I'm trying to be minimalistic too 😂
I’m guessing it’ll be a taxidermy dog.

High speed liveselling. How much more greedy will we become?
I love buying random crap. but im a lazy mf and I don't want to go through all the process of trying to get rid of my random crap if it's not right for me. so I buy less bc I'm avoiding doing work 😂 like I don't want to bin it bc that's wasteful. gotta donate it. gotta go to the op shop TO donate it. if they have a policy to not accept certain items I have to make a listen on fb marketplace then get harassed by 'is this availables' all day. then have to sit around and wait for them to show up. its too much for me lol
if i were a live seller, the first thing that I would sell would be my little brother

Cara is queen of listing 10 negative aspects of something and briefly stating 1 potential positives argument in favor and still straddling the fence on whether she likes it or not
haha I reject dichotomous thinking & love some nuance what can I say - also I personally wouldn’t say I list out pure negatives but point out things that are interesting and worth considering the impact. but ppl love to project on my vids 😅
@@thefinancialfreedomgirlit’s kinda depressing how the internet views having a balanced and nuanced idea of something like this as a bad thing now. Being impartial to a concept that isn’t to do with human rights etc. means you can 100% list the positives and negatives without letting your own personal opinion get in the way of it and I respect you’re willing to do that.
Its just another way of TellSell or QVC. It’s pure dread
I got caught this week. I bought some lip oils on a TikTok live. It was a rough week, I was very anxious and I failed to resist. At least it was from a local seller and made locally. I feel bad but at least it was an ethical purchase.
