Quick update: I discovered later that, unlike most weapons, there are no mods for the black powder weapons. So sadly there's no point in looking more than one, as scrapping them does not produce new mods.
When I came to the battlefield museum later, I also found a black powder rifle.
I thought that by walking to the Mr. Handy I had already joined the confederacy, but it looks like you can switch sides at any time during the countdown. So if you wanted to defend the fort instead, race up the hill before the countdown timer ends to join the Union.
And yes, I am pronouncing Philippi correctly! It can be pronounced Philipp-eye or Philipp-ee. I was taught -eye.

Ox - the town pronounces it -Philipp-ee because they want to differentite from the Biblical town of Phillipp-eye. I learned this first hand when i was deployed there for flood duty in 1996. ~ 7ohn

I transferred to an Artillery unit in Maryland, that is where i take my TH-cam name from. :) *** Everyone is in Phillipi was very nice. My appendix went south on me... spent time at Broaddus hospital. :p

Dude I may have met you. I worked for the City of Philippi during the 96 flood and talked to alot of MP's. I was one of the city truck drivers hauling debris to Clarksburg. Small world sometimes.

When I first came through here in the BETA for the Battle That Never Was event, I didn't spend much time there, but I was a little put off by the fact that they said Prickett's Fort was the site of a Civil War battle. It wasn't.
As Ox went through the place I winced at every historical anachronism and inaccuracy. But then it occurred to me: I think this is intentional. Bethesda did their research pretty well on other locations. All it takes is a simple Google to know Prickett's Fort wasn't looking out for the British or the Confederacy.
With all the ads, the place probably ceased being funded by the government in the Fallout timeline and had to sell out to keep operating. These companies were far more interested in profit than preserving culture and history. So what did they do? They tried to make the park more attractive by shoehorning it into major American events like the Revolution and Civil War, rather than the Native vs. Settler conflicts that actually occurred here.
They perverted history and Appalachian culture to sell products. I think that's what actually happened here.
And it really fits the cynical tone of pre-war fallout. A supposed utopia that in some respects, was worse then what came after the bombs dropped.

Prickett's Fort figures more into the French & Indian War/Lord Dunmore's War era, than the Revolutionary War. And being a frontier settlement area, it does have far more to do with Settlers vs Indians than anything else

I like the story of the dead soldier. My personal theory is that the dead soldier, was actually a tourist who died during one of the reenactments, seeing how the Mr. Handy stated they we're using real weapons for authenticity. The tourist died 20 years before the reconstruction of the fort, and wasn't found until recent. The mayor sends in a team to dispose of the body quickly, but they never got there, because the bombs dropped first.

There is one major problem with that idea. IIRC Fallout 76 is set in 2102, *25* years after the bombs dropped. So in addition to the mystery of the vault opening later then it was supposed to we have all this material that happened 5 years later then they should have.
@@Maximara what I'm suggesting is that the bones you pick up are actually 45 years old when you pick them up. If the Mr. Handy's internal processor were damaged when the bombs dropped, their internal clock might still think it's 2077.
@@ericcolbear2373 That idea has the flaw of why would there be someone dressed in a Civil War uniform to get killed in a reenactment *before* the fort was reconstructed? It was strongly hinted that the mock battle was part of the *reconstructed* fort. You are right that something is wrong with the Mr. Handy as it says the the body should be 200 years old which at best would put you at 1877 some 11 years *after* the civil war ended.
@@Maximara Maybe, but there would be no reason for the bones to also be radioactive unless the body died very recent to the Bombs dropping. Here is what we do know that leads me to my theory.
1. The Fort was going through a renovation (02:53), which leads me to believe that the fort was already existent, but might have been going through some reconstruction to fix the fort. It explains why the land mark earlier is also already there.
2. Nobody believes the body is as old as what people are saying. Grafton's mayor doesn't believe it's that old, but simply wants good press. The Mr. Handy's were pre-programed to think it's from a civil war, but there own scanners tell them the bones are only 20 years old, We know the bones could not have died after the bombs, since the Mayor of Grafton would either be dead, or not care about the fort after the bombs, so the body must of died at or before 2057.
3. The bones are radioactive. We could say it's because of the bombs, but the pre-war world was filled with consumable products filled with radioactive materials for preservation (Cram, Fancy-Lads, Nuka Cola), it's not hard to believe that radioactive material is absorbed in the bones of people living in that world.
4. Prickett's fort never was a part of the Revolution or civil war. As a commenter previously stated on here, the Civil war story was probably a fabrication by the sponsors of the Fort (Abraxo and Nuka Cola) to draw in more tourists.
5. Bones from the Civil war era would have decayed by the point the bombs dropped (212 years) especially bones not put in a proper casket and exposed to the elements as the game leads us to believe. Likely hood is the body dying at 2057 seems much more likely.
I have some bad news for you Ox. You haven't been using your scrounger perk. At all. Not even when you said you were.
You have to hit space to search the box a second time to get the extra scrounger items. Sorry man, lot of other people didn't realize that too.

Lathan Church there’s a revolver that looks like western style. Soooo... maybe that’s it? (I have no idea what’s the design difference)
There is one but no one gotten yet. There was a “bug” that stop questline here. But really they didn’t want people finishing the game in the beta.
There are single action revolver rifles
They exist, I found an army singleaction, the droplist is leveled. I visited the graveyard on higher lvl and found a bunch of blackpowder rifles instead of pistols.
What about that ultra powerfull pistol that takes forever to load?

Ox, I noticed that you didn't mention the outhouse behind the blacksmith shop. There was a corpse of a Vault Dweller in the outhouse when I went there.
Yeah, might want to hold off on doing too many of these fallout 76 lore videos so early! It's easy to miss important things for these lore videos when we haven't found all the minor details at every location yet. Worst case imagine if a quest takes us back to a previous location you made a video on, or some crate you were unable to lockpick contained some important holotape
@@starrysock Plus they might change tweak and change some bits. For me, the responder corpse outside Vault 76 was different when i first came out the Vault to the one seen in the Greenbriar run through. But you know what this means.........even more Oxhorn Videos! Given they will likely be tweaking and adding more content as time goes on like with ESO it should be long time before we finally escape Appalachia
@@anarchyantz1564 I doubt we're going to be seeing any major changes to any existing locations now that the game is mostly finished.
New content will probably be given to more minor locations that don't have much of a purpouse yet like it was with fallout's creation club by my guess.
Obviously doing a video on one of the vaults before it opens or whatever would be a bad idea, but I don't think we're really in much danger of changes. Missed content on the other hand though... well, just look st the comments.
I think he did not mention this because he could not see the back number on the suit. I remember watching one of his streams where this happened, so he may have purposely withheld saying where the dweller is from in case it is a dweller from a vault other than 76.

I can't believe they didn't feature the Philippi (Pronounced Philipp e) Covered Bridge. It's a West Virginia landmark.
And one of the only covered bridges in the us that still works as a main road.

I think the Bridge was built in 1856. I know it was built by Lemual Chenoweth of Beverly.

Pretty neat. My wife’s ancestor was the Prickett who built the real fort prickett. We also do battle re-enactments at phillipi every year.
I have family on both sides in the civil on my mom's side, its cool seeing the fort and where my relatives were at one time. Another great video Ox!

Not at all, roaches are WAY more resilient then rodents. They are one of the oldest species on the planet and even survived the Yucatan catastrophe. Like most said here, at that size they would be damn near un killable! It would take bullets upon bullets to take one down, and it would have to be in a fleshy spot thats for sure.

Oxhorn, I’m always so shocked to see how hard everyone is on you about your pronunciation! Whether it’s the name of a place or whether bullets are caliber or mm. Don’t sweat it. You do amazing work and put in a lot of hours to make great lore videos, the best out there. I have been following you for years, and you’ve never said anything so wrong it upset me or that I couldn’t understand you which I think is what is important. It seems so insignificant to dispute. I wouldn’t even pay attention to those kinds of comments. Only address questioning of lore or if you miss something significant someone else catches. Love you Ox

Four what 76 is, I personally am finding it to be a solid game. I actually like what they have done with the open microphone because you can meet some pretty good people from all over the world. First day I met a man from Nova Scotia, another from Spokane Washington. Grouping with others made it a lot of fun exploring.
Listening to someone talking to his family, or child crying, dog barking, music playing really makes to wish for Push to talk feature :(
When I went there, I found black powder rifles instead of hunting rifles. Don’t know if it’s leveled to your character but I found it when I was lvl 15. None the less it was freaking powerful and helped me kill a scorched beast later in the BETA. It was nice.

Ox, Figured I give a broken quest warning (don't know if its fixed in the full game). In Grafton the mayor will give will give you a quest, something like "Prepare for Tourist Season", where you go around Grafton and fix up / clean some attractions. One of those quest spots is at Pickett's Fort. The quest will tell you to fix the token machine in front of the Greeting Lodge, this is the broken quest step as there is nothing to activate at the token machine.
Its neat to see WV represented. I live about 5 minutes from Pricketts fort. The geography is all over the place as it takes about an hour to get to Phillipi from Pricketts Fort. Grafton is closer to Phillipi though, but still 40 minutes from Fairmont where Pricketts fort is. I'm not complaining, I understand you have to condense to even remotely make this work. Just interesting being from a place that is now in a Fallout game. (Grew up around D.C. originally as well so Fallout 3 was interesting too)
The 76 map is a bit confusing, I have been to most of the places in the game IRL but get lost in the game, lol

You can do a "get all the pies" run through if you are a real sadist. Just be sure to farm a full set of luck boosting armor and get the luck boosting rifle from Far Harbor.
When your luck is in the 20s all the time, you don't have to work the things nearly so much.

My family and I used to do living history re-enactments growing up. If you visit a fort unless it is stone most times than not they are re-creations because the original structure was burned or destroyed for "progress". So the fact that one in game is a re-creation is realistic.

If you look up the fort on the Fallout wiki you find out that the fort was never attacked by the British during the American Revolution but was instead used to protect colonists during the Lord Dunmore's War between the British Virginian colonists and the local indigenous peoples in 1774 BEFORE the revolution.
I can't play this game yet, because I pre-ordered the tricentennial edition, but I love your videos
To see Pricketts Fort in a game is pretty badass, I went there in like grade school. I applaud Bethesda, They really did their homework when it came to the history and lore of WV. Other than not having references to Bridge Day for the New River Gorge day ( The day the bombs drop would be Bridge Day of 2077 ) this looks amazing.

I actually worked at pricketts fort for a few years. It was built around 1774. And was long gone by the civil war. I cried a bit inside when I found a mission about a CIVIL WAR battle. I know that's part of the fallout quest humour but it still hurts
For doing this quest, I got a piece of Legendary Regenerating Leather Left Arm... needless to say I was excited

I just wanted to mention that the .50 ammunition is expensive and rare, but crafting the ammunition at the tinkerer's workbench does not cost much resource-wise.

Oxhorn, I just realized how cool spots like this will be if they add large scale pvp. Picture this: LARGE SCALE CIVIL WAR REENACTMENTS..
Hey Ox, your voice is silky smooth, but the sound of bullets is really jarring and loud. Going from one to the other is a really weird transition, and I think it would be more enjoyable for me if the gunshots were more muted. I don't mean to be rude or anything, but it's something I noticed that other people might agree with me on.
The gun sound volume was addressed by BSG and there might be changes in game for it.
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but to make use of the Scrounger perk you have to "search" by pressing Space when looting an ammo container.
The lack of human NPCs kill this game for me. I don't even need dialogue options, I just want some characters to make the locations more interesting.
Noah Alexander plus every mission is the same... go to a place, listen to some holotapes or terminals, and defend from a couple of waves of enemies who spawn... how fun! (NOT)

I'm not trying to ruin the game for anybody else, and I have the game pre-ordered. I'm just a paying customer voicing my opinion about what could be improved. The game is fun I just don't agree with some of the design choices they made...and these are things they could actually add with DLC in the future.

When I killed that yao guai, I got a broadsider, so, yes, they are in the game. Wish I had more inventory space for it.

A West Virginia native here. Interesting fact. Everyone I know including my Aunt and Uncle, who actully live there, pronounce it "Fill up Pee".
I don't want to spoil anything, but I noticed during your stream that you were trying to get the "full story" of the Palace; some parts of the Main Quest send you through there, and might have lore only accessible through the quest.

@@oxhorn FWIW I wasn't paying 100% attention to your stream so I don't know if you got it, (I was playing at the time too), but I know for a fact that there's lore about the place that isn't on site; there're terminal entries at a nearby ski lodge that refer to it.

Well I know where to go to stock up on Flintlock pistols in my playthrough. And I’m not gonna do the re-enactment until I loot the place, and finish the Buried With Honor quest

honestly i can see one problem here. certain weapons in game are so common you soon learn to not even notice them til you actually stare directly at them for a few seconds. you missed 2 pump shotguns. one of which you went back for later whilst trying to search the room again.
When I was a kid you could still see the "Burma Shave" signs along highways (I don't think there are any left these days) and it was a highlight of the travel time as we drove to our destinations when we went on family vacations.
I found it absolutely hilarious that during the assault of Prickett’s Fort an Union protection said that Union soldiers choose the refreshing taste of Nuka - Cola
The game actually looks much better than I was expecting it to, but I still wish it was a spin-off title similar to New Vegas. Really surprised and glad that it looks so good as it is though!
Oxhorn I believe you got a mistake in 11:13. I think the time you spent waiting is the time to let you get to the fort and join the union (Which is going to be sweet in multiplayer). Talking to the robot didn't make you join the confederecy but because you were at the parking when the battle started.
Fun fact: Philippi WV is the site of the first land battle of the US civil war. At the covered bridge down town.
