Double Rainboom was *not* a love letter to the work of Lauren Faust. It was an animation student's attempt to boost his resume/portfolio by dipping into the works of popular Cartoon Network shows from the past. He then used the brony community to hype up his work. The reason it shifted into the Power Puff Girls universe (and had the characters from other shows drifting through the void) was to showcase that he was proficient in multiple styles of animation. He was able to do all this while using the animation school's budget and facilities. The reason the story sucked is because the creator of the episode didn't care about making a good story. He cared about making good looking animation to impress his prospective employers.
***** On the subject of admiration to Lauren Faust, it really *would* be cool if someone were to make a fan animation with Firefly interacting with the FIM cast. That would be an actual reason to open up a portal to another dimension. Plot synopsis: "Twilight invents a magi-tech device that rips a hole in the fabric of reality, pulling a random pony from that dimension into this one. It turns out to be Firefly." There we go. Off the cuff, I've just written the synopsis for a better fan episode than 'Double Rainboom'. If that post you linked to is true, then Zach is more of a jerk than I initially suspected. He may have pulled the fan episode, but on his personal website he still takes credit for making it, bragging about it.
I'm really annoyed because my friend who has Netflix and I've told him a specific episode to watch instead searched my little pony episodes on TH-cam and watched Double Rainboom. Now he thinks that's what Rainbow is like, selfish and stupid. This episode can give a really bad first impression for a non Brony
I completely understand! I was trying to get my friend to watch my little pony (she's super into creepypasta) and when we watched it together, she started going on and on about how she hated pinkie pie because of what she did in the creepypasta Which has nothing to do with the show. It's so annoying and about a 3rd of the fandom does that :/ so I feel your pain.
In defense of the whole "nuking the town" thing, in the show there's never been any destruction caused by a rainboom, so she'd have no indication that a double rainboom would cause a nuke. The lack of remorse on the other hand is unforgivable.
Double Rainboom didn't feel like a regular episode. I know that goes without saying but with all the stupid references and Powerpuff Girls crossover, they should have known better that the show would never do those things. It really is a FAN episode in that regard, I expected something completely opposite from what we got like I dunno, something remotely close an actual episode of FiM?
This is why I don't get people(In some cases Tommy for enjoying the fandom stuff so much) On how how they say this and other works should be worked into MLP because I can tell you that it will kill the show in one shot and no mercy.

CrittersRule247 You know how most of season 4 when tackling new tropes in a fantasy setting, the one thing that most reviews seems to can't handle is how when dealing the tropes, they seem to have a rule saying that if any fantasy comes in, it atomaticlly sucks. At least that is how I seen.
The problem with fan-fiction is that people assume that its only purpose is people indulging their own fantasies, and forget that it is a legitimate textual medium.
I spent the part of the review after you said talent enhancers seemed like a good plot point thinking about how it might work. Rainbow Dash finds Twilight making the potion. Dash wants to try it, but Twilight says it might be dangerous. Thinking she is already talented enough, and respectful of her friends desires, Dash flies away. Later, she needs to help one of her friends with something (I don't know what, again I've only put about 20 minutes of thought into this), but discovers she can't do it. This could create an interesting character moment, with Dash doubting her abilities. She remembers the potion, but that brings up a huge problem. No matter if she decides to take or leave the potion, she'll be staying loyal to one friend while letting down another. In the end, she takes the potion, but the after effect of having no talent prevents her from helping her friend. Dash disappoints both of her friends, and it ends with a moral that trying to please everyone, usually pleases nobody, along with a good friend won't ask you to keep promises you can't keep (notice the word can't). If you have anything to add or criticize, feel free. Again, this took 20 minutes of thought and I'm sure it has problems. Please be constructive and respectful in criticism, I despise people who mindlessly hate and insult.
Well, that seems like it would work much better than DR's story. However, I'd think that the situation would have to be something extremely important for Dash to break her promise. The trick would be to find a situation that is both important and yet not desperate enough that Dash would have little doubt that Twilight would be fine with her drinking the potion (basically, the situation shouldn't be life or death). As one idea that might work (though this one does have something of an importance imbalance), a wyvern (or some other fast creature) has been terrorizing the town by scaring or simply keeping awake citizens and non-sentients (but hasn't been hurting people), and Fluttershy is trying to get to it to convince it to stop. The wyvern is, unfortunately, too fast for her to catch up to and get the attention of. Twilight has been gone for some sort of important meeting at Canterlot; so the town doesn't have their resident expert mage to consult for a couple weeks (no one wants to bother her because the matter is very important [this one could be life or death]). Fluttershy thus asks RD to help her catch the wyvern, but even RD is too slow. She remembers the potion from a couple weeks earlier (long enough for situation to have gone from annoying to relatively pertinent), and she decides to take it and help the town, despite the dangers involved. Unfortunately, she gets caught up in the power rush, expends a good portion of it, tries to help Fluttershy and fails. This idea has some problems too, but then again, I didn't expend too much time on this either.
That's a good idea. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like raising the stakes would weaken the moral. If it feels like something that has to be done, it'd be hard to blame her for doing what was needed. Basically, instead of "Which one do I help, and which do I betray?" I think it'd be more "Well, I need to do this, so do it." That's just my opinion, and I do agree that the stakes need to be higher than normal, just not quite as high as a wyvern terrorizing the town. I also like the idea of Dash getting caught up in the power, it gives a believable excuse as to why the potion wore off before she could help her friend. Maybe Fluttershy finds a wounded bird in the forest. She knows them to be incredibly fast, but she can't talk it down to her. She gets RD to try and catch it, but even wounded it's faster than her (that could help when she's doubting her abilities, something like "I can't even catch an injured bird") Not wanting to disappoint Fluttershy, she remembers the potion. She doesn't want to steal from a friend, but after hours of trying she gets desperate and sneaks out of the forest to Twilights house and takes the potion. She flies so fast she gets caught up in it, forgetting about the bird until she passes Fluttershys house. She goes after the bird on equal footing, but before she gets it her wings give out. Fluttershy takes her to Twilight, who recognizes the symptoms of her potion. RD confesses, and we get the moral.
Aah, I remember when Double Rainboom first came out. I saw comments like "Hey, this wasn't too bad," and "You should make more episodes." I was in the then minority that thought the episode was horrible. Keep in mind that I go in with an open mind no matter if I'm looking forward to something or not, so I didn't go in with the highest of expectations, nor was I expecting it to suck. What I was *not* expecting was it being the horrendous fanwork that it is. I'm gonna get this out of the way now: Rainbow Dash is my least favorite of the Mane 6. Since I was bullied heavily by people that were like Rainbow, I grew a bias towards cocky, arrogant characters, and while Rainbow is nowhere near the worst example of this type of character, I'm not a huge fan of her either. You can imagine my disgust at how Rainbow was portrayed in this. I get that Rainbow isn't the smartest pony in the world, but she has common sense, even more than Twilight most of the time, so me buying that Rainbow would just out of the blue drink Twilight's potion? Yeah... not buying it. Hell, that last sequence with her remarking "Yeah... get Spike," pissed me off so much. You just destroyed Ponyville, potentially hurting the economy and ponies there, and all you can say is "Yeah... get Spike?" God, that irritated me so much. Then we get the Internet memes... I hate when Internet memes are forcefully put into fanworks like these, since they have no place to be there. I kid you not, when I saw the troll face in that smoke cloud, I said to myself "A troll face? ...This is gonna suck, isn't it?" I also found a lot of the gags like the Scootaloo chicken joke and Bulk Bicep's "YEAH," to be forced as hell. Want to know why Slice of Life worked so well? Because it was an episode that wasn't meant to be taken seriously, kept the main characters out of the picture, much like the background ponies are, and despite being called "Slice of Life," it was the exact opposite of that, while still having a good story behind it. This was expecting the audience to take it seriously, and I don't know about anyone else, but as soon as the troll face came on screen, I stopped taking everything seriously. Then we get to, in my opinion, the worst case of false advertising since the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. Calling it the first fan-made episode (even though I believe Snowdrop was the first) and saying that it will strictly be MLP, only to have a crossover with the Powerpuff Girls for no reason other than "Lauren Faust made both series, so they MUST crossover!" You know what the sad part is? I wouldn't mind the crossover so much if: A. They kept the Powerpuff Girls in character B. Didn't have the stupid cliche of having Rainbow's wings break None of the Powerpuff Girls felt like they were in character. When the monster begged for mercy, and when all of them attacked, I couldn't believe it. Okay, I could buy Buttercup wanting to get one last hit in, but Blossom and *especially* Bubbles? No, that's not right. As for the stupid cliche of Rainbow's wings breaking... I should have seen it coming, but at the same time, that's no excuse for a cliche like that to happen. Then we get Pinkie pulling a Deus Ex... as much as I love Pinkie Pie, I can't buy that, especially since it took Twilight 10 minutes to make the same exact potion she was making since Magic Kindergarten. One could make the argument that making it again isn't as hard as the first time, but that's still no excuse. Also, Bloo showing up because Lauren Faust. All I can say is screw this fanwork. It's insulting to Rainbow's character, and having one of the worst crossovers I've ever seen.

the problem with Double Rainboom is that it is too heavily invested in its visuals and animation department. there was zero effort put into the writing, story and voice acting, thus; the story was crap, the references weren't funny, the voice acting was mediocre, and the characters where painfully out of it. started as an art form and quickly became self-indulgent crap... then again most of the art in this fandom IS self-indulgent crap
You know what? I ain't even mad. It's an animation project. It's a demo reel. It's a bunch of animators getting together and saying "Hey! Look at what we can do!" The writing bar was technically set at zero, but they went and blundered ahead anyway just because they wanted to go the extra mile, and even though they failed (miserably) I can't stay angry at them for stepping outside of their artistic department in the name of fan love. Now, as for the people who think it would actually hold up as a canon episode... for them, I simply have no words. Blimey, I'm double-late on this one, aren't I?

The best (and only good) part about Double Rainboom is that it will never have the honor of being the first fanmade MLP episode. No matter how much people deny it, Dusk's Dawn has that pleasure. And to that I say: HAHA! Suckers!
The thing that most annoys me about Double Rainboom is the simple fact that... Well, two rainbooms- wait no, she rainbooms in her first descent- THREE RAINBOOMS, in ONE GO, is a _scientific _*_impossibility_*. To do two rainbooms without stopping, or even slowing down even once, is impossible, because that would imply that she flew faster than the speed of sound, then broke... Another sound barrier?
Well seeing that the rainbow on her tail was going up her leg and then she traveled to another universe i believe she broke the sound barrier (in space somehow) then broke the speed of light which is is still impossible and the third rainboom... I have no idea OR it could be lazy writing
Actually her husband Craig McCracken created the show, Lauren Faust just worked as the storyboard director and writer. But still she has contributed to these two universes. But despite this being the pinnacle of Faust worship since she is pretty much the Animation Jesus (which I totally understand and agree on many respects)... Double Rainboom is a bucking piece of shit
Funny story: I recently read a fanfic that was supposed to have tons of references hidden in the story. It was also terrible. The references were a big part of the problem, mainly because the more obvious ones broke the pacing on top of not being funny or clever, but the story itself had horrible pacing issues to begin with.
I'm more curious as to what was going through Lauren's head when she actually saw this...Judging by how many of her characters were bastardized and warped beyond recognition, I can imagine she said "thank you" to the people who made this through teeth gritted with frustration!

11:00 Um...Josh...You do realize that PPG was one of the most graphic sources of cartoon violence at the time right? For crying out loud, the INTRO TO THE SHOW had Buttercup knocking some guy's teeth out with blood, and basically was 100% beating people up before the show even starts. I will however concede that it doesn't seem likely that they'd go beat up a monster that had apologized and agreed to leave. All I'm saying is that 'innocent" is definitely a bit of a stretch with the way they dealt with most of the villains in the show.
One, great profile picture. Two, it's true. My aunt who works in a hospital met Justin Beiber. He turned up, talked to no-one- went straight to the Kid's cancer ward. Loads of kids came running up to him, one six-year old girl had a scarred face and she tried to hug him- he literally shoved her away. Then he took a little bald girl- she had to be bald- took a picture and then left, crushing loads of little kids hearts. And those kids had cancer.
While I'll respect the sheer amount of talent, passion, and effort that went into it, I will say if Double Rainboom was Canon, it'd probably be the worst episode of MLP:FiM

So you're saying that going too far in being assertive is way worse than causing mass destruction of a town for a petty reason. At least Fluttershy felt bad about doing it. And how did you not rip off Mr. Enter's opinion if he said the exact same thing in Josh's collab with him, which you obviously didn't watch since Josh doesn't think the episode is that bad.
I've noticed in a lot of reviews, people have always talked up the animation, as if it was really great for the most part. I don't get it. The animation has it's moments, yes, but for the most part, it was just terrible. The facial expressions were off for the most part and awkward to look at and the animation is very stiff throughout.
You have some unrealistically high expectations there. The episode was literally the best animation I have ever seen in a fan work. It was nigh indistinguishable from the show except for very sparse choppy movements.

I agree, the animation is stiff, the face in a quarter view doesnt look anything like the show and the highlights are blocky. I know animation is hard but the animators look like they were only focusing on certain parts (eg the "triple" rainboom). Even the Powerpuff Girls look a little better the ponies!
Red Bolt I honestly didn't think I'd have much a problem with the animation because I know it's tough to full blown replicate that of the show, but they failed miserably on this. I just don't get the praise...

Luna was on the moon for 1000 years and she's not dead so it's only Justin Rainbow Dash isn't also later in the episode she breaks the freaking sound barrier and goes to Powerpuff Girls so I'm pretty sure she can survive out there if Luna was there for literally 1000 years one century she was only out there for a couple minutes or less
11:00 Dafuq? If you had ever actually watched a single episode of The Powerpuff Girls, you'd know it was one of the most violent shows of its age rating in history.
This has been my favorite review of Double Rainboom, and most of the stuff you said I took into a lot of consideration. Thanks to the flaws you and others pointed out, I did my own rewrite of Double Rainboom that can be found in the Discussion page of my sappy little channel. Check it out if you ever want to. It's not even close to perfect but hopefully the story and writing is better than an F or F+.
In the end, it may not have been the best thing storywise, but it IS a prime example of the amount of dedication our fandom has. I enjoyed it for what it is, an awesome crossover with a bunch of awesome references, what's not to love?
The part that I hated most about that episode was when the monster agreed to leave the town in peace and yet the PPG killed it anyway. That was what killed it for me, but I did like the animation.
kirara2516 That's actually in-character for the PPG. They did the same thing to Mister Mime after they changed him back into Rainbow The Clown. They went nuclear on Fuzzy Lumpkins (1st time) when he just wanted to be left alone.

Soufriere oh no no this is character for them. They do not kill or fight monsters for the fun of it. Its even been shown in the show if the monster is willingly leaving they will help it out of the city or watch leave they do not fight the monster if it's willing to leave. I should know I grew up watching the power puff girls and the way they were shown to react to the monster leaving and rainbow dash is out of character for them on huge level. The girls are used very very poorly not even my little brother who I mind you has only see 2 episodes of ppg thinks they weren't used right and he's 7

When I first watched this, I thought Rainbowdash died and she went to the cartoon graveyard - and that's why all those cartoon characters were there. It would of been great if they actually bothered to do any explanation like that :/
You know what the worst thing about Rainbow in this Story is (at least for me)... In "Return of Harmony" she betrays her Friends and puts Equestria into Danger cause she thinks her Home is gonna fall from the Sky (so she had to choose between two things she loves equally. Here she just did it for her own selfish reasons. I know it's kinda late for that and maybe someone already pointed it out... but I just wanted to add my Bits to it
Actually the explosions thing is just a myth. At best you're eyes will pop out of your head but the vacuum isn't strong enough to make you're head explode.

You can't just add a Trollface and not have it come back, it's like if I told you that a cat made out of water melons was going to be the leader of the U.S. Army, only for it to turn out that I went back in time with Bill Cosby in the year 1944 and we met Hitler who turns out not to be such a bad guy. See what I did there, that's what Zach did. On top of that why does Kira Buckland/Rina-chan/Girl that voices Twilight Sparkle in almost every fucking MLP FIM fan animation have to always make any character she voices sound so fucking whiny. It's like this even when she is actually getting paid. Don't get me wrong she does have a good voice it's just most of the time she doesn't try very much.

I'm VERY late with this, I mean I first watched this when I was a tween But because of how the video butchered Rainbow Dash, the comedy and the concept of a 'talent enhancer' potion, I'm actually writing a rewritten version of the concept! It's gonna be written like a story, not a script If anyone wants to read it when it's done I'll post the link in the replies!
This is by far, the most entertaining thing you've done Josh. If your collab partners keep hurting you, maybe don't do collabs unless you're decked out in mideval battle armor. Keep up the good work
Great review, although I myself rather enjoyed Double Rainbow and all its refrences. A little strange though, that Twilight says she doesn't know what it does, and then immediately afterward explains that it is a talent enhancer. If anyone else understands this, please let me know. Thanks!
With Equestria Girls you could basically get away with murder a dozen times over and get off scot free as long as you say "I think I goofed a little". I wonder if this fan episodes writer got hired...

The only thing I'd applied that too is Starlight Glimmer unless that's who you were referring too All Sunset did was be an Alpha Witch till the events of EG and as a result she was treated as a Social Pariah and forced to make up for what she did
I wonder if people would have liked this animation better if it had done something similar to one episode of Sonic Boom (where Sonic goes so fast he ends up on another plane of existence)?
Josh, you covered everything I thought when I watched that video. You made your "overreaction" priceless. Though the reactions in the video were probably spot on. I am face hoofing over all of the idiotic comments in the comments section and all of these people need to realize that when reviewers are asked to review something that it's gonna be brutally honest and nit picky. But I love your videos and I can't wait to see the next one, I would also love to do a collab video review with you if possible in the future.

It could be because they couldn't get the license to Zelda but that didn't stop with them with the other references...so...they thought the Domo face would make it funny? :/
Ok I agree that many of the references are out of place but the cartoonetwork character appearances DO serve a purpose. Rainbow Dash is passing through one world to another. She's going through the universe of Cartoonetwork during the time period Powerpuff Girls aired. So it kind of makes sense.
***** True. I remember when I watched this for the first time, I could literally feel the disappointment. All that buildup in the trailers, making me believe that the double rainboom would make something TERRIBLE yet exciting happen...all wasted. Seriously, what a let-down.
He brings up that the PPG's act sociopathic when they beat up the monster after Rainbow lets it go, but they did something similar in the show. When they fought that clown that turned into a mime and turned the world black and white they had to use music to turn everything back. After they turned the mime back to good and he was cheerful and singing and NOT A THREAT they proceeded to beat the crap out of him. So, yeah, that wasn't out of character for them. Also, they're five year olds with superpowers. You can't expect much impulse control or thoughts of long-term actions.
Not only that the Clown basically stole all the color from town they didn't have to beat him up yes but he still had consequences to face better than Starlight getting off Scottfree
Everyone before watching this: "Double rainboom is the best animation ever!" Everyone after watching this: "DOUBLE RAINBOOM IS DA WORST THING EVAR! KIL IT WITH FIR!" I'm not saying i like it, but that's about 90% of the comments.
What I'm really surprise that the creator of this disappointing fan-made episode deleted this on TH-cam and put it on the Double Rainboom website. I think the reason why he deleted it because of hatred of mostly everyone of this and he doesn't want to see it
Nakarotto1 He was the guy that made Fez and suffered from one of the biggest developer meltdowns in game development history. Angry Joe spoke about it in one of his top 10 controversies lists. Can't quite remember which one but its quite frightening just how frustrated Mr Fish got at the time (of course leading to him cancelling Fez 2).
People defending this episode is like defending pink gold peach (internal screaming) in Mario kart 8 or dark pits inclusion in smash, (internal cringing) they only defend it because of the underdog effect... This is why I'm a cat person... (I like dogs though)

Ok this review made me chuckle a lot. And actually the best thing I found in Double Rainbow was that Bubble's impression. That was awesome. As for the rest of it. It was bad. I didn't like it all that much and I have no desire to ever watch it again.

Last i check not every fanfic gets permission to exist. 2: This is why we can't have nice things: "Can i borrow that?" 'Sure' *1 month later* 'Hey you really killed our character.' "I know, i'm sorry . . . can i borrow it again?" 'Haha, F*k No!' 3: Domo is love, Domo is life, Domo is . . . Majoras Moon, wut? 4: "...Love letter to Lauren..." More so to the internet, it was just filled with references rather than meaning.
I think the permission was more for making the episode and not the fanfic itself. Most of the time for fanfics they just stick disclaimers to the top of each chapter.

Double Rainboom was *not* a love letter to the work of Lauren Faust. It was an animation student's attempt to boost his resume/portfolio by dipping into the works of popular Cartoon Network shows from the past. He then used the brony community to hype up his work. The reason it shifted into the Power Puff Girls universe (and had the characters from other shows drifting through the void) was to showcase that he was proficient in multiple styles of animation. He was able to do all this while using the animation school's budget and facilities.
The reason the story sucked is because the creator of the episode didn't care about making a good story. He cared about making good looking animation to impress his prospective employers.

On the subject of admiration to Lauren Faust, it really *would* be cool if someone were to make a fan animation with Firefly interacting with the FIM cast. That would be an actual reason to open up a portal to another dimension. Plot synopsis: "Twilight invents a magi-tech device that rips a hole in the fabric of reality, pulling a random pony from that dimension into this one. It turns out to be Firefly." There we go. Off the cuff, I've just written the synopsis for a better fan episode than 'Double Rainboom'.

I was trying to get my friend to watch my little pony (she's super into creepypasta) and when we watched it together, she started going on and on about how she hated pinkie pie because of what she did in the creepypasta Which has nothing to do with the show. It's so annoying and about a 3rd of the fandom does that :/ so I feel your pain.

In defense of the whole "nuking the town" thing, in the show there's never been any destruction caused by a rainboom, so she'd have no indication that a double rainboom would cause a nuke.
The lack of remorse on the other hand is unforgivable.
Double Rainboom didn't feel like a regular episode. I know that goes without saying but with all the stupid references and Powerpuff Girls crossover, they should have known better that the show would never do those things. It really is a FAN episode in that regard, I expected something completely opposite from what we got like I dunno, something remotely close an actual episode of FiM?
This is why I don't get people(In some cases Tommy for enjoying the fandom stuff so much) On how how they say this and other works should be worked into MLP because I can tell you that it will kill the show in one shot and no mercy.

I spent the part of the review after you said talent enhancers seemed like a good plot point thinking about how it might work. Rainbow Dash finds Twilight making the potion. Dash wants to try it, but Twilight says it might be dangerous. Thinking she is already talented enough, and respectful of her friends desires, Dash flies away. Later, she needs to help one of her friends with something (I don't know what, again I've only put about 20 minutes of thought into this), but discovers she can't do it. This could create an interesting character moment, with Dash doubting her abilities. She remembers the potion, but that brings up a huge problem. No matter if she decides to take or leave the potion, she'll be staying loyal to one friend while letting down another. In the end, she takes the potion, but the after effect of having no talent prevents her from helping her friend. Dash disappoints both of her friends, and it ends with a moral that trying to please everyone, usually pleases nobody, along with a good friend won't ask you to keep promises you can't keep (notice the word can't). If you have anything to add or criticize, feel free. Again, this took 20 minutes of thought and I'm sure it has problems. Please be constructive and respectful in criticism, I despise people who mindlessly hate and insult.
Well, that seems like it would work much better than DR's story. However, I'd think that the situation would have to be something extremely important for Dash to break her promise. The trick would be to find a situation that is both important and yet not desperate enough that Dash would have little doubt that Twilight would be fine with her drinking the potion (basically, the situation shouldn't be life or death).
As one idea that might work (though this one does have something of an importance imbalance), a wyvern (or some other fast creature) has been terrorizing the town by scaring or simply keeping awake citizens and non-sentients (but hasn't been hurting people), and Fluttershy is trying to get to it to convince it to stop. The wyvern is, unfortunately, too fast for her to catch up to and get the attention of. Twilight has been gone for some sort of important meeting at Canterlot; so the town doesn't have their resident expert mage to consult for a couple weeks (no one wants to bother her because the matter is very important [this one could be life or death]). Fluttershy thus asks RD to help her catch the wyvern, but even RD is too slow. She remembers the potion from a couple weeks earlier (long enough for situation to have gone from annoying to relatively pertinent), and she decides to take it and help the town, despite the dangers involved. Unfortunately, she gets caught up in the power rush, expends a good portion of it, tries to help Fluttershy and fails. This idea has some problems too, but then again, I didn't expend too much time on this either.
That's a good idea. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like raising the stakes would weaken the moral. If it feels like something that has to be done, it'd be hard to blame her for doing what was needed. Basically, instead of "Which one do I help, and which do I betray?" I think it'd be more "Well, I need to do this, so do it." That's just my opinion, and I do agree that the stakes need to be higher than normal, just not quite as high as a wyvern terrorizing the town. I also like the idea of Dash getting caught up in the power, it gives a believable excuse as to why the potion wore off before she could help her friend. Maybe Fluttershy finds a wounded bird in the forest. She knows them to be incredibly fast, but she can't talk it down to her. She gets RD to try and catch it, but even wounded it's faster than her (that could help when she's doubting her abilities, something like "I can't even catch an injured bird") Not wanting to disappoint Fluttershy, she remembers the potion. She doesn't want to steal from a friend, but after hours of trying she gets desperate and sneaks out of the forest to Twilights house and takes the potion. She flies so fast she gets caught up in it, forgetting about the bird until she passes Fluttershys house. She goes after the bird on equal footing, but before she gets it her wings give out. Fluttershy takes her to Twilight, who recognizes the symptoms of her potion. RD confesses, and we get the moral.

Aah, I remember when Double Rainboom first came out. I saw comments like "Hey, this wasn't too bad," and "You should make more episodes." I was in the then minority that thought the episode was horrible. Keep in mind that I go in with an open mind no matter if I'm looking forward to something or not, so I didn't go in with the highest of expectations, nor was I expecting it to suck. What I was *not* expecting was it being the horrendous fanwork that it is.
I'm gonna get this out of the way now: Rainbow Dash is my least favorite of the Mane 6. Since I was bullied heavily by people that were like Rainbow, I grew a bias towards cocky, arrogant characters, and while Rainbow is nowhere near the worst example of this type of character, I'm not a huge fan of her either. You can imagine my disgust at how Rainbow was portrayed in this. I get that Rainbow isn't the smartest pony in the world, but she has common sense, even more than Twilight most of the time, so me buying that Rainbow would just out of the blue drink Twilight's potion? Yeah... not buying it. Hell, that last sequence with her remarking "Yeah... get Spike," pissed me off so much. You just destroyed Ponyville, potentially hurting the economy and ponies there, and all you can say is "Yeah... get Spike?" God, that irritated me so much.
Then we get the Internet memes... I hate when Internet memes are forcefully put into fanworks like these, since they have no place to be there. I kid you not, when I saw the troll face in that smoke cloud, I said to myself "A troll face? ...This is gonna suck, isn't it?" I also found a lot of the gags like the Scootaloo chicken joke and Bulk Bicep's "YEAH," to be forced as hell. Want to know why Slice of Life worked so well? Because it was an episode that wasn't meant to be taken seriously, kept the main characters out of the picture, much like the background ponies are, and despite being called "Slice of Life," it was the exact opposite of that, while still having a good story behind it. This was expecting the audience to take it seriously, and I don't know about anyone else, but as soon as the troll face came on screen, I stopped taking everything seriously.
Then we get to, in my opinion, the worst case of false advertising since the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. Calling it the first fan-made episode (even though I believe Snowdrop was the first) and saying that it will strictly be MLP, only to have a crossover with the Powerpuff Girls for no reason other than "Lauren Faust made both series, so they MUST crossover!" You know what the sad part is? I wouldn't mind the crossover so much if:
A. They kept the Powerpuff Girls in character
B. Didn't have the stupid cliche of having Rainbow's wings break
None of the Powerpuff Girls felt like they were in character. When the monster begged for mercy, and when all of them attacked, I couldn't believe it. Okay, I could buy Buttercup wanting to get one last hit in, but Blossom and *especially* Bubbles? No, that's not right. As for the stupid cliche of Rainbow's wings breaking... I should have seen it coming, but at the same time, that's no excuse for a cliche like that to happen.
Then we get Pinkie pulling a Deus Ex... as much as I love Pinkie Pie, I can't buy that, especially since it took Twilight 10 minutes to make the same exact potion she was making since Magic Kindergarten. One could make the argument that making it again isn't as hard as the first time, but that's still no excuse. Also, Bloo showing up because Lauren Faust.
All I can say is screw this fanwork. It's insulting to Rainbow's character, and having one of the worst crossovers I've ever seen.

the problem with Double Rainboom is that it is too heavily invested in its visuals and animation department. there was zero effort put into the writing, story and voice acting, thus; the story was crap, the references weren't funny, the voice acting was mediocre, and the characters where painfully out of it. started as an art form and quickly became self-indulgent crap... then again most of the art in this fandom IS self-indulgent crap

It's an animation project. It's a demo reel. It's a bunch of animators getting together and saying "Hey! Look at what we can do!" The writing bar was technically set at zero, but they went and blundered ahead anyway just because they wanted to go the extra mile, and even though they failed (miserably) I can't stay angry at them for stepping outside of their artistic department in the name of fan love.
Now, as for the people who think it would actually hold up as a canon episode... for them, I simply have no words.

The thing that most annoys me about Double Rainboom is the simple fact that... Well, two rainbooms- wait no, she rainbooms in her first descent- THREE RAINBOOMS, in ONE GO, is a _scientific _*_impossibility_*.
To do two rainbooms without stopping, or even slowing down even once, is impossible, because that would imply that she flew faster than the speed of sound, then broke... Another sound barrier?
Well seeing that the rainbow on her tail was going up her leg and then she traveled to another universe i believe she broke the sound barrier (in space somehow) then broke the speed of light which is is still impossible and the third rainboom... I have no idea

Actually her husband Craig McCracken created the show, Lauren Faust just worked as the storyboard director and writer. But still she has contributed to these two universes. But despite this being the pinnacle of Faust worship since she is pretty much the Animation Jesus (which I totally understand and agree on many respects)...
Double Rainboom is a bucking piece of shit
The story was REALLY bad. I was disaponited by the pony voice acting. However I was in awe about how smooth and show accurate the animation was.
Funny story: I recently read a fanfic that was supposed to have tons of references hidden in the story. It was also terrible. The references were a big part of the problem, mainly because the more obvious ones broke the pacing on top of not being funny or clever, but the story itself had horrible pacing issues to begin with.
... This feels like a nostalgia critic episode.
I'm more curious as to what was going through Lauren's head when she actually saw this...Judging by how many of her characters were bastardized and warped beyond recognition, I can imagine she said "thank you" to the people who made this through teeth gritted with frustration!

11:00 Um...Josh...You do realize that PPG was one of the most graphic sources of cartoon violence at the time right? For crying out loud, the INTRO TO THE SHOW had Buttercup knocking some guy's teeth out with blood, and basically was 100% beating people up before the show even starts.
I will however concede that it doesn't seem likely that they'd go beat up a monster that had apologized and agreed to leave. All I'm saying is that 'innocent" is definitely a bit of a stretch with the way they dealt with most of the villains in the show.

I've noticed in a lot of reviews, people have always talked up the animation, as if it was really great for the most part. I don't get it. The animation has it's moments, yes, but for the most part, it was just terrible. The facial expressions were off for the most part and awkward to look at and the animation is very stiff throughout.
You have some unrealistically high expectations there. The episode was literally the best animation I have ever seen in a fan work. It was nigh indistinguishable from the show except for very sparse choppy movements.

I agree, the animation is stiff, the face in a quarter view doesnt look anything like the show and the highlights are blocky. I know animation is hard but the animators look like they were only focusing on certain parts (eg the "triple" rainboom). Even the Powerpuff Girls look a little better the ponies!

This has been my favorite review of Double Rainboom, and most of the stuff you said I took into a lot of consideration. Thanks to the flaws you and others pointed out, I did my own rewrite of Double Rainboom that can be found in the Discussion page of my sappy little channel. Check it out if you ever want to. It's not even close to perfect but hopefully the story and writing is better than an F or F+.

The part that I hated most about that episode was when the monster agreed to leave the town in peace and yet the PPG killed it anyway. That was what killed it for me, but I did like the animation.

I should know I grew up watching the power puff girls and the way they were shown to react to the monster leaving and rainbow dash is out of character for them on huge level. The girls are used very very poorly not even my little brother who I mind you has only see 2 episodes of ppg thinks they weren't used right and he's 7

But because of how the video butchered Rainbow Dash, the comedy and the concept of a 'talent enhancer' potion, I'm actually writing a rewritten version of the concept! It's gonna be written like a story, not a script

Great review, although I myself rather enjoyed Double Rainbow and all its refrences. A little strange though, that Twilight says she doesn't know what it does, and then immediately afterward explains that it is a talent enhancer. If anyone else understands this, please let me know. Thanks!

Josh, you covered everything I thought when I watched that video. You made your "overreaction" priceless. Though the reactions in the video were probably spot on. I am face hoofing over all of the idiotic comments in the comments section and all of these people need to realize that when reviewers are asked to review something that it's gonna be brutally honest and nit picky. But I love your videos and I can't wait to see the next one, I would also love to do a collab video review with you if possible in the future.

Ok I agree that many of the references are out of place but the cartoonetwork character appearances DO serve a purpose. Rainbow Dash is passing through one world to another. She's going through the universe of Cartoonetwork during the time period Powerpuff Girls aired. So it kind of makes sense.

He brings up that the PPG's act sociopathic when they beat up the monster after Rainbow lets it go, but they did something similar in the show. When they fought that clown that turned into a mime and turned the world black and white they had to use music to turn everything back.
After they turned the mime back to good and he was cheerful and singing and NOT A THREAT they proceeded to beat the crap out of him. So, yeah, that wasn't out of character for them.
Also, they're five year olds with superpowers. You can't expect much impulse control or thoughts of long-term actions.

Can't quite remember which one but its quite frightening just how frustrated Mr Fish got at the time (of course leading to him cancelling Fez 2).

Ok this review made me chuckle a lot. And actually the best thing I found in Double Rainbow was that Bubble's impression. That was awesome. As for the rest of it. It was bad. I didn't like it all that much and I have no desire to ever watch it again.

I think the permission was more for making the episode and not the fanfic itself. Most of the time for fanfics they just stick disclaimers to the top of each chapter.
