I'm 77 and grew up in Covington, Ky. I remember going down to the Ohio fiver on Sundays as a young boy and listening to the sound of that calliope on the Delta Queen. It was kind if magical because the sound of the calliope carried over a long distance. It was a different world then.
The calliope player you are hearing here is Rosalinda DeLeon who also is the piano player aboard the vessel. We have worked together almost 2 years now and she is the greatest!
I gotta weigh in on this. This lady is the best Calliope player I ever heard. She has three nice sets organized, and she avoids what I call "the dodo bird" accompaniment in the left hand and plays real harmony. This particular set has some nice diminished 7ths and augmented 6ths (I think). She varries the tempo from piece to piece which makes it interesting. And the glissando at the end and the nice cadence is fantastic! The sight of the pipes during the glissando is really neat!
I don't know much technical about music, but that was so neat it made me cry. It was epic in every way. If you can make people so happy they cry, then all of the lessons and studying paid off.
That’s absolutely amazing. For some reason I’m fascinated and mildly creeped out by the sound of a calliope but that lady nailed her performance. Having watched a ton of steam calliope videos online I think this is the best I’ve seen. Video quality is excellent, audio is perfect, no jerking of the camera or any other tricks. I don’t think she made a single mistake here. Really amazing.
when I was a little kid living in eastern ohio...we would hear that music and knew the delta quenn was making it's way on the ohio river..thanks for posting
Yes, I can agree. I grew up in Ludlow, KY which is right across the river from Cincinnati and I used to RUN to the river bank just to wave at her when I would hear her wonderful music! Brings tears to my eyes now. Boy, how I miss those days.
Wow! What a bit of Americana and an ingenious use of steam exhaust. Taking a ride on a paddle boat along the length of the Mississippi River is definitely on my Bucket List. Thank you for sharing this, HiJack1313!
Gentleman I am going to set the record straight about everything said to hopefully ease the confusion. The American Queen is the only Steam Powered Paddle Wheel Riverboat running at this time. The Delta Queen did loose her exemption from SOLAS in 2008 and she was taken to Chattanooga, Tennessee and operated as a floating hotel. She did suffer some damage from the harsh winter last year but plans have been in the works for some time to bring her back out cruising the rivers. She did not re-open as a hotel after last winter due to the plans of returning her to the rivers. She was purchased in March and has been re located to Louisiana to begin refurbishment to return under steam power in 2016.
Oh I loved that and I remember the circus coming to town and walking from the railroad to the circus grds some 16 blks or so and the calliope playing, the elephants pulling wagons with lions in them etc- guess I am getting on! Tnks for the memories (Jimmy Durante-the "Nose" and the best

Because of Manfred Mann's song "Blinded by the Light" I ended up here.watching this most interesting performance on the "Delta Queen". In his song Manfred Mann as a line like this...THE CALLIOPE CAME CRASHING TO THE GROUND....I wanted to know what Manfred Mann's Calliope was; I knew he was not referring to the Greek Godess of epic poetry ! My Dad and I were coming home from a baseball game in St Louis one evening when we heard this calliope music while we were crossing the bridge over the Mississippi River into Alton, Illinois. Looking around we determined it was the Delta Queen going through the locks at Dam 27 which is now located further downstream. Even after 50 years I still cherish this time with my Dad which included hearing this calliope as the cherry on top.
This is a video I always love coming back to! I just love calliope music! Calliope music has a way calming me and making me happy! The lady does a superb job!!
I remember watching her lock through Kentucky Dam in the 90's. As she was leaving, they fired the calliope up and away they went. I miss the days of sitting and watching the boats lock through the dam.
The Delta Queen had the best calliope on the river system in my humble opinion. As a passenger on her many years ago I had the privilege to play a tune on her calliope, got my "vox colliopus" certificate to be able to play on any western river system, still have it but alas, never have had the privilage to use it!
My dad owned one. He used it in parades and publicity events. I was embarrassed to play it but did. That way I had use of the 58 Corvette used to pull it!
The Calliope on the Delt Queen actually was on the Water Queen which was part of a Hollywood silent film "Stage Struck" which was filmed in my home town here in New Martinsville WV
@HiJack1313 The steam is still up on the boat and the calliope was played up untill November when it started getting too cold to keep the lines with steam. She will play again in the sring. Come and visit and hear her sing.
I hope they save it; it’s one of two surviving Californian riverboats the only other is it’s brother ship the delta king Also waiting for the Robert e lee great song great caliope proformance

Well, that makes better sense now. Personally, I couldn't hold a candle to this playing. In this era of overproduced entertainment and lipsyncing, people lose sight of how difficult live playing is. Thanks for posting!
I've heard the American Queens colliapee when it comes to Chester, Illinois. Chester is hometown of popeye, and it plays the popeye theme when it leaves
Sorry to resurrect an old conversation, but I know exactly what show you guys are talking about, and I thought the EXACT same thing. It was called CANDLE Cove. I remember because I would play "candle cove" with my brother before he passed away. His favorite character was the skeleton guy, until he watched this one episode. He never let me watch that episode, though.

God save the Delta Queen! And a very special thanks too Minnesota's Senator Jim Oberstar and Hawaiis Senator Daniel K. Inouye For making sure this making sure the Senate will never even get to vote on this exemption.

And heart I thought I was weird it really uplifts my spirit since I suffer from grief now no one truly understands... 💖💞
Yes
worked on the Delta queen back in 2008 as a deck hand was pretty fun. this calliope has an interesting history as well as the ship itself.
Paul’s Ego brought me here.
I can't even describe how much I love this.

I just love the caliope I could listen to it all day long. It was especially enjoyable on the riverboats as they went up or down river.
Absolutely WONDERFUL! Thanks to the History Channel for helping making me aware of the effort to SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN!
This is the exact song I always imagined would be perfect played on a riverboat calliope.
I miss the sound of the steam whistle and the good music coming from the calliope I really hope to see her back in point pleasant wv again some day.
Paul.
I've never looked at a boat and thought it was cute, up until now.
The songs in this video are: “Waitin’ On The Robert E. Lee” and “Here Comes The Showboat”

"Waiting for the Robert E. Lee". This song always throws me off because the refrain sound remarkably similar to the Alabama Jubilee.

DELTA QUEEN CALLIOPE MUSIC IS SO WONDERFUL MUSIC AND THE CALIOPE PIANO MUSIC IS MY FAVORITE INSTRAMENT AND ANYBODY HERE IN 2021 OF MAY.
That must be really fun. I've played a regular Tangley CA-43 high-pressure air calliope many times, but I've never played a steam calliope before.
So cool! A friend of mine recently inherited an antique calliope from her grandfather. Watching her play it was pretty unsettling for some reason...
