At 72 years of age I have no intention of 'getting a job' in any field but I must say that I find you and Neil extremely interesting and informative. I just watched this for my first time. I'm 37 just starting to getting into the cyber security field. I have always been interested and had a passion for it. After many years of being a Chef, I'm looking forward to the change. I would like to say this was so helpful that I THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR TIME. I remember messing with computers when the screens were green and all the changes they went thru. knowing now I'm going back to something I truly enjoyed as a kid. I could not be happier. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INFORMATION.
These questions are exactly the questions that have been on my mind. It’s great to just hear from a professional who’s already in the industry. Thank you for the content.
49 yrs old, a firefighter/paramedic for 18 yrs and I’ll be retiring in a few years. I’m deeply interested in this field as a career change and I’ll be putting these techniques into action. Outstanding video. Very informative and encouraging.
I switched over from the medical field 3 years ago. Went back to school. Got an IT degree. Focus on Cyber Defense. Graduated. Got my Sec+ and finally after almost a year got my first job in IT. Security is tough to get into and will take patience and time. Clear your schedule to learn ethical hacking. It’s a rabbit hole. Fun but a rabbit hole. Find a good mentor to help because sometimes reading isn’t enough.
Awesome interview! Being of the older generation and knowing that its possible to get into this field without having to quit my job and attend a college full-time, has just put a fresh wind under my wings. So glad I found this interview!
How amazing is this, was trying to find out how to enter the cyber security industry and this video suddenly popped up on my recommended. This seriously helps a lot. Thanks a lot to both of you.

I can't watch this video without jotting down some vital point from sir David and the NSA guy thanks to him also for being brutally honest and straightforward with his answers . He didn't show any sign of pride or something related to that based on his intellectual abilities in the ethical world. You both are amazing
I am 32 years old and considering to make a change in my career from drilling industry to IT. Cybersecurity always interested me. Then, i found this video and offered me the most important steps to take in order to get into the field. Thanks a lot, David and Neil for this most valuable advices! 🙏👏
Thanks a lot for the encouragement. Two days ago i had my first session of CCNA course as my learning path. Congratulations for attending the college. The age is just a number when you have ambition. Best of luck. 😉
Been going to school online for about a year for IT with a concentration in Cyber Security. Never felt like I was gaining practical workplace knowledge. This video has helped me figure out a path I can start on. Thank you guys so much. Definitely felt represented as a 28 year old who just left the construction industry to pursue something better and more interesting to me. This is a big help!
Hack the University; as well a putting a backdoor on your teachers computers adjust your marks. Spend your time doing something more practical. If you get caught; at least those in the industry will know you worth. Enough said.
One of the most interesting parts in this video is David Sir asking the absolute right questions for beginners. This is a great video. Gonna smash the share button!
Great video David! After getting hurt at work a couple of weeks ago I've come to the realization that my days as a delivery driver are numbered so after seeing this video I've really developed an interest in Ethical Hacking/Pen Testing. I started an Ethical Hacking course on Udemy and so far I've really enjoyed it and I'll be switching careers hopefully sooner rather than later. At 48 it's a bit scary switching up careers but based on what I'm learning so far I'm really enjoying it. What I like best about your channel is how thorough you are with your questions and making sure that your viewers get all the information we need to get ahead and succeed in the IT field. Keep up the great work!
Thanks David and Neal one of my favorites from your channel, I'm 43 and have been in and out of IT for years but nothing has really captured my eye like cyber security, I wish I had started sooner but no time like the present.
Whaooo! This was blessing in disguise cuz I've taken security+ & repeating the Pen Test course to get the certs while I come from a non-IT background. Awesome to you BOTH....hat off
One of the best IT-related channels anywhere! You cover deep technical subjects and career-focus subjects. The time it must take to record, edit and maintain this - it's just amazing that it's free to us. Thank you!
I’m 41 and I’m about to take my CompTIA A+ just to start, because I’ve been involved in computers since I was a kid. Then I’m going into hacking and cybersecurity as a major career pivot. No fear. Thanks for all the helpful information you two.
What a great video - and I appreciate how David is considerate of his audience by making sure Neil break down and explain the high-end terminologies for beginners to comprehend. And thank you for going even beyond and adding all the meaning of the abbreviated words and terms used by Neil in the video 🙏🏽
Digital gold as always my friend! Thanks Neil and David! I’m almost done on my Micro Bachelors. CCNA, AWS, Computer Science here I come! Let’s get motivated everyone!
@@davidbombal Anytime. Thanks for clearing up the social media being important. I used to always be against social media, but I knew it was only matter of time before I came to terms with its benefits.
@@wilfredoperez1804 For now it’s the “Intro to Information Technology” through WGU on www.edx.org/microbachelors. I probably don’t need it, but I’m a stickler on fundamentals.
David, Neal, I've personally endured 3+ years of targeting by an unknown group. It has sparked my desire to learn to protect myself and others. This resource is among few, of sufficient quality, to truly guide newcomers in this field. Thank you.
It’s rare to see an interviewer asking really great questions in conversations, but these were great questions on topic every time, never leading to a totally different topic
I have only recently got intrested in cyber security due to my phone getting hacked from going on a wifi signal. I have instantly got hooked and have been studying everyday to unstand what happened! I am 30 and a social worker so my knowledge on this is basically zero ! Glad i found your channel. I cannot wait to learn this art it is so fascinating

I am 2 years late. I hope nothing big changed from the time this was released. I want to go into cybersecurity I am 27 and this video is so amazing answers a lot a questions. This video motivates me when he said that there are people from different backgrounds. I currently do construction but I want to change careers. Thanks so much
The part about home labs and participating in capture the flag events, just the importance of hand on experience in general was super useful. I would have applied to jobs until old age with no idea why I'm not hearing back. Thank you both
Thank you Gents! I have over 25 years of IT experience and finally decided to focus on Pen Testing certification last year. I truly want to prepare myself to pass the OSCP. However learning that the eJPT could be a valuable stepping stone into becoming a certified JR Pen Tester is very intriguing to me right now. Kudos gents!
Awesome, all of it. Especially the last part about imposter syndrome. I'm a long time sufferer myself. People tell me I'm smart, but I struggle a lot with my self image.. Listening to this interview, I've made a bunch of notes and started outlining a path towards getting into the field of cyber security. Thank you again David! ❤
Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you on behalf of myself and everyone who forgot to say it.. I would say I wish I had known this 25 years ago but I don't regret everything else I learned having done certifications along the way as you can always put the knowledge to use, specially in pen testing
Mother amazing one-on -one stellar interview. I fired up a linkedin invite with Neil and before the video was done. I got accepted on Neil’s Network. Amazing David!.
As a 15 year old interested in cyber security I can say that this is the best video I have found so far. I am homeschooled and a junior in high school so it can be tough to find advice/info that applies to me. Thank you so much!
I too was Homeschooled as a teenager, and loved every minute of it because I learned HOW TO MASTER Linux, Adobe, Navigate through Microsoft windows on all sorts, get into APPLE, etc. All of this was taught to me via my dad, and a few family members in the U.S. Government/U.S. Military via my dad's side of the family. I Am now almost 38 yrs old and always learning new exciting things about this stuff which I love with a passion.
im 15 too! granted, i go to a public school so it’s not the same, but they only offer one basic computer science class so in my spare time i want to start looking into stuff i can build off of as well
Damn I'm actually about to cry. I'm 33 and have always had an interest in computers, especially the hackery side of things. I'm in a completely unrelated field, doing low intelligence work. I've almost completely given up on living, but watching this video just gave me some realistic hope and a reason to go on living. You help people more than you know with honest, practical content like this. I thank the both of you and sincerely hope the information in this video is still relevant.
This video is what I needed. I am a few years from retiring from the military and have been going hard at attaining a BS in Cybersecurity, but I always have known deep down inside that experience in the field is more precious than a degree that doesn't give me the experience needed to be successful. I have taken note of all the training sites, enrolled, and will train on my off time along with the eJPT. Thanks David and Neil.
I am that 17 year old that you mentioned. I just finished H.S. a year early. I got interested in C.S. through college courses I took in H.S. I am taking an AS degree in cyber security remotely. This video was immensely helpful to me. Thank you both, for putting this information on YT. Wishing you both all the best.

I am a little late here, this video was out in Jan 2021. Only found this gem towards the end of 2021. The advice and road map in this industry given by Neil really open up my mind on how I should navigate into Cyber Security. Of course, you are a good host David! Great insightful content!
I am 27 and started learning cyber security now. I get discouraged thinking that i will always be behind people who started at like 18-19. They will always have 10 year head start. But thanks for give me motivation.

I’m a cybersecurity analyst trainee right now, and I’m going to graduate in 3 weeks. Red Team are hackers/attackers while Blue Teams are defenders. I’m currently doing both, but I like Red more. 😊
I love this, i appreciate the casual conversation about this. The type of environment I come from is and has hacking as a thing thats shine down upon. I just looked at jobs today in cybersecurity in Seattle. Every one of them, from entry level to advanced, required a four year degree. Don’t lie to people, please. At the end of the day, you will benefit from a degree in the long run, but also in the interview process. The recruiter puts you on top as a result. Those that don’t have degrees, need certs and qualifications.
This is an amazing video and despite my experience in the field, I have learned a lot about the best part of IT, and what the barriers of entry are. I thought CEH was the entry barrier in the field. I have taken roles that assume many parts of blue team role, but never looked at it like that.
You are actually changing my life, these interviews are so valuable to us students. I am no longer coasting along in my degree, I am actively applying myself.
What a video! I am a 3rd year Cyber Sec student and was looking for this video to help me get a bearing on what I needed to do next. Thank you to you both for a very informative segment!

Keep hearing the industry is no longer concerned with degrees - and there are people with degrees who can’t even land a job. I have A+, Net+ & Sec+ and can’t even get a help desk interview (attending WGU) and have worked as a QA manager for nearly 10 years + security background. @Daniel the Maniel Because you have more job security and you learn from teachers. And i live in the Netherlands, if you're a student here you get around 1500 euro's from the goverment to pay for college each year.
@Daniel the Maniel If you work for a company and someone applies for it with a degree, you will most likely get fired. Because you don't have a degree in IT. So in general it is better to have a degree for job security.
And now in 2023…all the job postings I am seeing are needing at minimum a bachelors degree + certs like the CCNA, CompTIA A+, Security+ all in lieu of experience and even with experience. I am a product designer looking to switch to cybersecurity. Built a career over 20 years, worked at Google, Dell, Verizon, Gartner to name a few and am over it and want to do something that truly matters in this world. But there are some excellent points and great advice in this video. Definitely building a home lab. Going back to school for my Bachelors in Cybersecurity. Getting my Certs. Listening to podcasts and videos every day, am learning on HTB and THM and am going to do CFT’s and bug bounties when I feel ready.
Davids got a great course on Wireshark and Kali Linux on Udemy
I've sent this video to so many HS grads that want to know how to start. Love this video. Thank you!
Thanks David and Neal one of my favorites from your channel, I'm 43 and have been in and out of IT for years but nothing has really captured my eye like cyber security, I wish I had started sooner but no time like the present.
Neil is incredibly well spoken. A true professional.
Whaooo! This was blessing in disguise cuz I've taken security+ & repeating the Pen Test course to get the certs while I come from a non-IT background. Awesome to you BOTH....hat off

I'm 18 years old and starting my bachelors in Software Engineering
@Oh Canada i hate how age is always visible and shown in todays world. Its like you cannot do anything without it impacting you.
@Oh Canada but one thing is it too old to learn things
@Daniel the Maniel Because you have more job security and you learn from teachers. And i live in the Netherlands, if you're a student here you get around 1500 euro's from the goverment to pay for college each year.
@Oh Canada i mean why does age matter so much. What is the reason?
