    A ricer does a similar extrusion of hir like clay strings and can hold a little more clay

    Nice mug! I think it’d look good if you wiped it back with an oxide or underglaze to pick up the subtle texture of the strings. I like the sifter idea, too!

    Looks great, Ann! I really liked the bean trivit 😂 but I think my favorite was the angel hair, mason-stained!
    I use the small hand held extruders to give me tight coils to apply, keeping it raised to the surface of leather hard pieces. (in the vein of 'arts and crafts' pretty style). My favorite design is to apply it like a fiddle head fern's early growth. I have a larger hand held extruder that I use to make even and consistent coils for coil pieces. Having the same size every time lets me concentrate on the design I'm gong for instead of rolling the next coil.

    My recent teacher’s suggest that a coil be used inside the base of the cup to seal the base joint. I had not done that previously. I see you don’t either. Thoughts, Ann? ✌️❤️

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kathy. Your teacher is right and I usually do put a coil over the seams. The coil is a safeguard against the two sections coming apart. I wondered if anyone would ask a question about that. Jim and I really did talk about that when we were piecing this video together I would have gone into much more detail about construction of the mug but we were trying to keep the video down to 10 minutes if we could and we figured the video was more about the decorating than the construction so I glossed over the parts that were more construction oriented. thanks for watching and happy potting to you and to everyone in your class.

    Can you mix underglaze in clay then do this or will you lose the underglaze once mixed. Sorry new but I’m loving these ideas

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alison. Good thinking. You probably could do something like that, but it would take a lot of underglaze to mix it in and underglaze is quite expensive. It is better to mix the clay with stains I would think. The Mason stains are made for doing this. Happy potting to you.

    I’ve wondered why you choose slumping into a sphere rather than using the same styrofoam as a hump mold? I have a heck of a time getting slump molded clay from folding on itself or they end up wonky and lopsided. Do you have any tips on using a slump mold?

  • @clubfishersd

    If you extrude the little coils using the garlic press, and you just wanted to use them as texture and not completely press them into the main piece of clay, how would you be sure they adhere?

    • @LittleStreetPottery
      @LittleStreetPottery  ปีที่แล้ว

      Tricky...that's why I like to roll them into the clay. You might experiment with putting a layer of slip down before attaching the coils. Love to know what you find out! Thanks.
