  • This is a video for Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 enthusiasts. In the video Vikrant Singh talks about upgrading the motorcycle's suspension and why one should do it.
    The INT650 is a great motorcycle. But it has its flaws. And one of not-so-good things about the Interceptor, is its suspension. It works at slow speeds and low load conditions. But for anything more serious, it lack refinement and control.
    Thankfully, there are suspension upgrades available for the 650Twins, which includes the Continental GT650. Two companies make these bolt-on upgrades that are available in India. And both companies are pretty well known, well established, and expensive. You have Öhlins and YSS. Vikrant went in for the latter because it offered a higher degree on control. Though cost wise there's very little difference between the two.
    In this video Vikrant Singh talks about what's available in the YSS Suspension Upgrade Kit. How easy it is to install the upgrade. How to set it up. And finally, how it feels to ride.

    Your rider sag calculation is SPOT ON, but.... you want to use Front Fork TRAVEL vs. space from fork to triple. Front Fork Travel is 110mm. So you want 1/3 (as a baseline) from 110mm based on your weight with gear. I believe if you use the "gap" you are closer to 140mm, which will not be as precise as you are closer to bottom out by 30mm. Great detailed video. YSS front upgrade is a MUST!!!! Great price and great feel after install.

    Hi , did you add any top-up fork oil with your method ? Can you please share if you felt the need to change the oil later ?
    I was planning to follow Stuart Fillingham's method of removing the forks and changing oil , but am a bit intimidated by the process.So happy to find your video that provides an alternate easier method.
    Thanks for creating and posting this video !! Really helpful
    I have the YSS kit in order and will be doing this upgrade soon.

    I have no suspension knowledge at all, so the selling point for the YSS kit was its simple drop in package. I did change the oil ( used the syringe oil level tool to get the legs even ). Hesitant to say the weight of oil as there is no consistency in viscosity manufacture to manufacture so a 10wt from one can be dramatically different to another (Maxima (59901-10) 165/150 Grade 10WT Zero Drag Formula Racing Fork Fluid, for reference though not sure on its world wide availability ).
    The results are stunning, I aim for bumps & ruptures and its just glides over them. I had changed shocks previously and have been happy with the improved responsiveness over OEM. As you say suddenly the back end is harsh in comparison where it had been improved....
    Well worth the money if you ride long stints in the saddle....

    I have got one concern, the YSS uprade kit comes, besides to others parts, with two YSS PD Fork Valve named "5" in the YSS instructions sheet. When you remove the stock springs isn't there something similar to the YSS PD Fork Valve that need to be also removed and then replaced with the YSS parts? Hope it is clear what I mean. Thanks

    the static sag value please? (bike fully extended - on motorcycle weight[no rider])
    35mm total sag is aggressive numerically... (my view)
    since the rear shock is upgraded it be reasonable to increase the sag to 40-45mm for the front.. for a plush riding experience.
    hope it helps

    Did you bore out the compression damper before adding the emulator valve? From what I understand, the job of the valve is take over compression damping duties, and for that the rod has to be made higher flow by boring out the holes. Good video btw, very informative.

    • @vikrantsingh6916
      @vikrantsingh6916 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. The emulator valve is the same Dua as the inner tube. So no boring required. The spacer tube though is shorter than the stock to compensate for the space that the emulator valve occupies at the bottom of the tube.

    • @abhishekjmadan
      @abhishekjmadan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vikrantsingh6916 That's not what the drilling is for. The compression damper has horizontally drilled holes that control the flow of oil from the lower into the stanchion cylinder. This flow is what creates the compression damping. These holes are fixed in size, and thus do not offer any adjustability of compression damping. The valve emulator is meant to sit on top of the compression damper and do the work of creating damping by controlling the flow of oil, by creating a variable sized hole that is controlled by a spring. But for the valve emulator to be sole owner of this responsibility, the horizontally holes on the compression damper need to be relieved of it first. Thus, they need to be enlarged so that they become free flowing and do not actually create any compression damping.
      Fixed hole compression dampers do not deal well with square hits. Thus, if they are not enlarged, then they will continue to over damp the compression on square hits. So if YSS is recommending not drilling it, then the square hit characteristics of the fork will not change, which means that the fork upgrade only fixes the problem of the suspension being under-damped in regular riding, and does not fix the problem of it being over damped on hitting obstacles a little too hard.

      @@abhishekjmadan Vikrant,you are 100% correct! He needs to drill out the holes in the compression dampers.I have an old Yamaha xs650 and have the Emulators also (not YSS) The original manufacturer and designer of this product. The difference with the holes drilled out is dramatic even without the Emulators. But with Emulators u get the bast ride possible in everyday in compression and rebound and control.

    Hi! Great videos and very informative. huge help to set the sag of my Int 650. Thank you. One question: you say that the sag is calculated on 1/3 of the travel but on other sources it is said that is 30%. So in the case of the front suspension would have been 33 mm and not 36... which measurement is right?

  • @vinaynandal733

    Is is better than trying for usd forks?

    • @diaryofawanderingboot4058
      @diaryofawanderingboot4058 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      USD forks will handle way better. Here the springs have been updated for better handling of bumps ,an emulator valve is added for a small amount of compression damping adjustments and a preload adjuster is added. As a combo they handle bumps of all sizes better at speed, give the rider an option to set compression damping the way the suspension absorbs an undulation and preload adjuster gives the rider the ability to load up the springs .
      The USD forks are a whole other ball game. They'll handle flex much better than an regular fork. But the level of adjustment would still be left to be desired as tailoring the suspension to your weight is always worth it.
