Lisel Crowley, jewelry artist and instructor, visited Cool Tools to show us how easy it is to coil precious metal silver clay and add detail to this pendant. She uses Cool Tools Bezel Templates to create a seamless bezel for the centerpiece of this pendant.

I'm going to have to sell my soul in order for my hands to quit shaking. Or, at least, not to shake so much. That's always been my problem when working with clay. But it will be well worth it. :) Thank you for these tutorials!
I'm going to make a ring, to set quite a large garnet into, for my 40th wedding anniversary. I have big hands, so will enjoy designing something quite dramatic...loved the pendant idea, and will hope to follow that theme. Should point out that while I am an artist and a modeller, I have never used silver clay!! Loved the demo, thank you.

I have wanted to have a go at this for years, but the cost is a bit prohibitive when you are retired. I was going to torch it [after buying a torch, naturally] but am now debating looking at a kiln, as I am arthritic, and holding the torch could prove a problem. GAH! more delay! Thank you. N

I have a question. If you are wanting to use a gemstone like say ruby, citrine, or lapis, or something to that effect, can you solder a metal bezel to a fired metal clay piece instead of creating a clay bezel in this manner? The reason I ask, is that I would like to use these types of semi precious stones in my silver creations but I know they wouldn't stand up to the heat firing process. Anyway, thank you so much for making the tutorial and I look forward to getting a response.
Hi Cathy... Yes, you can absolutely set a gemstone after firing. Once the silver is fired you can solder it. If you have a bezel cup you can use silver paste and fire it in place and then set the stone. Have a great day!
Amazing, I feel so inspired, and also it's relaxing to listen to. Don't you have to connect the clay with the clay next to it, each time it touches clay embellishments the surrounding clay? Or, does it fire and completely connect via kiln? Also, can I use my oven or cone 6 temp. at a kiln I use? Those are my options. Wait, there is a torch there!! How long do I torch it? I'd much rather the first two methods. Do you not need to paint it silver? AMAZING!!
So glad this video was inspiring! Lisel Crowley is using water to connect wet clay to wet clay and wet clay to dry clay. This method works fine. Using a slip is also a great way to make sure that your components get a strong connection. Slip can be bought pre-made, or you can make it yourself by adding distilled water to your clay. The firing process does make the metal particles fuse, and creates a strong bond at the connection points. All clays have different firing schedules. Most silver clays fire around 1650 F give or take. If your kiln will fire at that temperature, you should have good success with kiln firing. Most metal clays can be torch fired, however we always recommend kiln firing. Once the clay is fired, it can be tumbled or polished to reveal the beautiful silver metal. The clay is fine silver or sterling silver there is not need to paint it. Please check out our learning center. There is tons of information to help you get started on your metal clay adventure! Really enjoyed this video, as looking to start some projects using clay. Although, I don't have a clay oven, kiln to set them, but only a conventional oven at home. I know you can do this with clay, but not so sure with this type. Also, does it dry silver, or do you paint it ?
Hi Jojo, this is silver metal clay, so it requires being fired in a kiln. This particular clay fires at 1200°F, however there are many clays that fire higher. Metal clay kilns generally fire up to 2000°F. Once the clay has been fired, the binders burn off and you are left with an actual metal (silver, gold, bronze, copper - whatever metal clay you are using) piece. Hi, Thanks for the note. The centerpiece used in this video is dichotic glass. This product can be fired at 1300 degree F without melting for fusing to the silver. Not recommended for torch firing.

is it possible to protect raw stones that could be damaged (I read your guide) by the fire? Or I read that there's another silver clay for low fire, should it allow to fire every jewel? I create jewelry with raw stones in a contemporary way where metal cover like leaves and waves the stone, the classical setstone isn't really my style! So just to know if it would be possible with this technique creating similar jewels (ex. like simuero jewels). Thank yoU!
Hi Eleonora, there is no way to protect natural gemstones when firing. The only gemstones that can be fired are the ones in our guide. Hope this helps!
After a PMC is fired can the piece be cold worked to adjust the bevels like normal silver or gold. I am thinking making prongs then move the prongs to hold a large stone. Can that be done with the RMC?

how do you make a coil that is thicker in the middle and thinner on the ends?
Hello, you would want to press out the coil with the snake maker, and once the middle is the thickness you desire, slowly move towards the ends and gently place more pressure as move back and forth. This will thin out the ends. I hope this makes sense.
what kind of tumbler like arock tumbler? so in order to do this beside the stuff you have on the table i would need a tumbler and a dehydrator?
Hi Melissa, you do not necessarily need the dehydrator. You can simply let the clay dry on its own. This will of course take much longer however than using a dehydrator. Your kiln may not be firing at the correct temperature. We recommend firing at 1675F for 3-4 hours. We have found through experience, trial and error, that there are some kilns that can or do fire somewhat lower than what the digital display states. This can be due to several reasons (age and use of the kiln being one of them). Regardless, and because of lower firing temperatures, some artists have experienced, when bending post-firing, cracking and even breakage of their Sterling Silver pieces after firing at the recommended firing times and temperatures. By testing with a pyrometer, we have found that these problems are due to an under-firing kiln. That being the case, for those artists who wish to bend the metal post-firing, we recommend firing for 3 or 4 hours at the 1675F temperature. This longer firing time, as simple as it is, has proven to be an excellent insurance policy to ensure the clay is completely sintered, and then, can withstand the additional rigors of bending post-firing- this is especially true for underperforming kilns or for those that may have experienced cracking or breakage when bending.
How big is the CZ used in this video and how was it fired? Thanks
Hi Donna, the CZ used is an olivine cz that is 12mm x 14mm. It was fired open shelf at 1675°F for 2 hours. Thank you for the question!
I am trying silver clay myself, and its not turning orange in the firing process. I am using a firing torch. Does this mean the torch is not strong enough? Pls help me :(

Wait....you glossed over the most important thing! What IS this stuff and how does it work? It's clay? Then you fire it and it turns into metal? You can fire it with the stone inside without breaking the stone? How hot? Do you need a kiln or is this an oven thing?
Hello, this is called metal clay. It's a binder mixed with silver particles, so that when it's fired in a kiln, the binders burn off and you are left with actual metal. There is a wide range of gemstones that can be fired in a kiln, which we have listed in our Gemstone Firing Guide. I got through 6 minutes of your Video and like your style. I just watched an Hour Plus Video before I watched Yours and the 10 year's experience this person had in my opinion was sloppy.. I am a Professional Fine Art Photographer, Artist in Oil ,, Acrylic,, Lacquer with Brush,, Air Brush,, etc and I guess my downfall is I am a Perfectionist. I grew up working in my dads Auto Body Shop building cars and custom painting so you can imagine the tedious job doing air brush murals on Cars, and Motorcycles was.. Now being disabled from an Auto Accident with a Drunk Driver I have been painting on canvas and board and was looking for something more creative and thought Medal Art was something I would like to try .
