I'm so glad Sesame Street is resurfacing in the meme editing world, and people are finally realizing how funny, and chaotic this show is. Everyone else is doing compilations of Elmo losing his shit over Zoe, and her rock, and it reminded me of the chaotic relationship between these two gay dorks, so I decided to give them some love.
The whole debate on whether or not Bert and Ernie are a gay couple has been going on since the beginning of time, and shows no signs of stopping. After rewatching these sketches to make this video, I can definitely see why. They act like an old married couple in a sitcom (with Bert being the nagging housewife, and Ernie being the childish, dumbass husband), and not to mention how much Ernie simps over Bert. They're in love, stop denying it, Sesame Workshop.

@@BLU-ky6bn yeah they were adopted! they were about five or six when they ran away (they were rescues, so we weren’t sure) the pound called us but we couldn’t pay the fee, so the pound adopted them out to different family’s but all in all happy ending for them

I remember thinking they were married as a kid, because they acted like my parents. Not completely, but they definitely reminded me of my parents.
So much so, I asked my kindergarten teacher if they were married.
Immediately, she got all serious, she pulled me aside and asked me, voice dropped to a whisper.
"Why do you want to know?"
So I told her. "They kinda act like my Mommy and Daddy."
She legit hummed in thought, whole ass face of contemplation before looking me in the eyes and whispering. "If i tell you, do you promise not to say anything to the other kids?"
I nodded.
"Yes, but you can't tell anyone, Ernie's Mommy and Daddy are not very nice and they don't approve of him and Bert's relationship. So they said they were friends."
I was so excited. So excited that I immediately went home and told my parents and made them swear they wouldn't say anything.
Honestly, looking back, it's surprising that I was so open to the idea. Back then I was still the hypo-rabid religious kid that was well on her way to be a great bible thumper. I'm much better now. Still religious, but I'm glad to say I'm no longer a Phobe.

They're both Gen X raised by really religious people so the base phobism is there, but they don't really care unless it's shoved in their faces.
But, don't form opinions of my parents purely based on that. Beliefs only make up a small part of someone, unless taken too far, they're good people so I'd appreciate if you'd respect the fact that you don't know them.

My parents are homophobic and I hate that part of them and do try to explain but I'm trying to ignore that they are because they are my parents,but if it it's a friend,I can choose. If it was a friend that was a homophobe, a racist or anything that a person can't change I would avoid them like the plague. If they don't try to change I just wouldn't be close to them. Parents may not understand but I just wish they wouldn't insult people or support the killing of people they don't understand

1:51 Up until the 50s there has been a period where married couples weren't sleeping in the same bed and only in the same room.
Nowadays married couples also sleep in separate beds when one of them would be waking up by the other while they are sleeping and with Bert and Ernie being very different, I guess this arrangement is better for Bert's health.
Actually I think that was just on tv because it wasn’t considered appropriate to show something so intimate like sharing a bed. The point still stands though.
If Mommy bear and Daddy bear from Goldilocks can sleep in separate beds so can Bert and Ernie

One of the writers, like during the 80s.
But the characters' creator Frank Oz said they weren't. I think he would know better than one writer who came in over a decade later. Sesame Workshop said the same thing. But both were respectful of the other side and said they were glad gay people felt represented …even with characters based more on the Odd Couple than anything.

Here's a fun fact actually: Frank Oz (the original voice actor of Bert and close friend of Jim Henson) supports the interpretation they're a couple. Although Bert and Ernie are based on him and Jim Henson and initially Oz didn't understand the theory, he's since really come around to it. I just think it's really sweet

Just some fun facts for you all about the muppets and LGBT representation:
Frank Oz (Co-Creator and original voice of Bert) supports the interpretation of these two being a couple. Although initially didn't understand it, because Bert and Ernie were based off him and his close friendship with Jim Henson (Co-creator and original voice of Kermit), after looking into it and understanding, he's since really come around to it. He's just stated he didn't feel right playing a gay character as a straight man and possibly getting something wrong.
Professor Honeydew and his assistant, Beaker, have canonically been together since the beginning. Honeydew calls him "Beakypoo" and openly states he's attracted to him. In the ABC series they're explicitly dating, though it isn't touched on very much.
Statler (One of the old men in the balcony) openly stated he dated a man.
Richard Hunt (Original voice of Scooter and had a big hand in the making of Fraggles) was openly gay himself and wrote one episode of the Fraggles that was all about his experience of grief and letting go of the people he lost to AIDS.
Gonzo has been genderless for decades now. There's an official comic strip from 1986 that depicts him as walking past bathrooms labeled "male" and "female" and instead choosing one labeled "Whatever."
So if anyone tells you your LGBT interpretations of these characters are invalid, or that Jim or anyone else involved wouldn't want you seeing it this way, they're wrong.

We don't really need to pretend they're in the same bed- I've never shared a bedroom with a roommate, nor have I ever known another adult to share a bedroom with anyone other than a romantic partner. Also, twin beds were common enough for married couples on television (probably far more than actual couples) for decades.

I always assumed that Bert and Ernie have different sleep needs, so they have their own beds. Maybe they need different mattresses. Maybe one of them tends to kick in their sleep. Maybe one of them overheats easily. It could be anything, really, but that doesn't mean they're not in as good of a relationship as those who share a bed. Also, I think it's very sweet that their beds are close enough for them to hold hands.
