And a fine example that the American experiment has failed and turned into exactly what it was started over in the first place. If I'm not mistaken, the first words out of his mouth on the 911 call were that he was the Attorney General, so he was already seeking preferential treatment and a potential cover-up. Then an officer arrived on-scene and supposedly, the officer and this AG walked up and down the road, trying to find out what he hit. Considering the fact that the decedent's glasses were on this guy's car seat (and it's reasonable to assume the officer on-scene saw them that night, not at a later date), it's obvious that this guy hit a person and it's absolutely astounding that the officer on the scene lent this guy a car to drive home instead of arresting him on the spot. So, being alerted to glasses (which were not his) sitting on his car seat, he then knew that he hit a person, not an animal. At that point, one could suspect that he stopped searching for the person because he wanted/intended for that person to die so there wouldn't be any witness to the crime (the intent thereby "upgrading" the crime to murder). To be clear, none of us know exactly what happened and none of us know what was going through his mind that night, but when shown the facts, it is not clear that it wasn't murder. I would agree that it sounds like the initial action (hitting the person with his car) wasn't murder, but his behavior afterward, and thus taking the entire event as a whole, certainly could be viewed as murder, in my opinion.

That's just an awful story. HOW he didn't know or at the very least stop and call authorities from the scene instead of after returning to his home is beyond me. Imagine that poor man's family. They will never see justice for their loved one. The worst is that he gets impeached and possibly loses his job --possibly loses his job. It may have been an accident, but why drive home and call 911 and say you didn't know where you were at the time? Those two stories alone should make Iowans vote blue for a decade or more.

I'm very much accustomed to horrible southern politicians, but one reason I've considered retiring to IA or MN for part of the year is the regional ethos that marries ethical executive behavior with an avoidance of ideological extremism. However, I'm becoming pessimistic.
