    Never enjoyed the blues or an oil change as much as today.
    Thank you.

    Ian - very artfully done. The good camera work and music made the sequence of an oil change almost mesmerizing. Nice job!

    Very relaxing. After seeing changing the old filter and the exhausted oil, seems to feel the BMW's appreciation ;-) Maintenance is an activity that helps both the subjects involved!!!

      Congrats! I'd definitely recommend joining the Airheads Beemer Club, it's been a really great resource for me to find help (and camaraderie) with these bikes. :)

    Estupendo y didáctico, ver como colocas en orden la arandela de metal y la de goma, en el filtro de aceite, tenia dudas y me las has resuelto. Gracias y un saludo. Jorge

    It’s a good idea to remove the dipstick/filler plug before draining the oil. The oil will then drain faster taking more of the contaminates with it.

    Changing the oil on my bike is one of my favourite things. My wife knows she won't see me for a couple of hours.
    The task has a 3 cups of tea timeline.

    Beautiful bike, I have the same silver r65 I just engine swapped after a valve explosion. Random question, but do your luggage cases touch the exhaust? I mounted mine but got worried when the plastic pressed against the mufflers themselves, should I be worried they'll melt or do yours touch too?

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, my bags have about 2 or 3 inches of clearance between the pipes and the bottom of the bags! They get warm, but certainly don’t melt. If yours actually touch the exhaust, it’s possible you have the wrong luggage mounts, they are model specific to the R65/45. They definitely shouldn’t touch!

    Are you sure that you need the paper gasket? You should always mesure the depth of the canister and do the calculations in order to use one shim or more, and If the paper gasket is needed! :)

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the gentleman I bought it from told me he had measured it and always used one metal shim and the paper gasket on the outside, which is what it’s been running. You’re right though, I should probably trust but verify!

    Your oil filter is not an original BMW spare part. :) The original one looks like two filters one after the other, conntected with a flexible part. How do I know? I had a BMW R65 as a student in the 80ties and I used to buy my parts at a local BMW dealer in Germany :) Now, about 40 years later I ride a BMW again, an R1200RS and I love it.

    • @bunshoft
      @bunshoft ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I noticed that too.There are two types of filters. The two piece filter is for bikes with cylinder head engine bars that partially obstruct the filter opening. The two piece design allows the filter to bend around the bars. I have an r65 with bars.

    Well done. I have this exact bike. Best source for panniers? Thanks.

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ooh, I got lucky with my panniers, got them from a local DIY moto garage. They can be a pain to find, and the racks can be even harder, since they’re specific to the model. I’d suggest trawling Craigslist, and maybe posting that you’re looking for some on some of the forums. Another option is calling up shops that specialize in airheads and see if they have any lying around! it’s definitely a search though. good luck!

    Hello , how much oil have you put on?

  • @richardhall916
    @richardhall916 ปีที่แล้ว

    What kind of tool wrap do you have? Did it come like that. Or did you put it together yourself, thx!

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a Wolfman tool roll. The bike didn’t have its original kit when I bought it, so I had to cobble one together. It’s served me well though!

  • @chrisarvin1715

    Where do you buy your oil filter and gaskets?
    Also what oil do you use? Thanks in advance!
    I'm a recent R100 owner who is riding again after a long layoff. Keep it up, your video is inspiring.

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris! I didn’t realize you had an airhead. :) I usually get the kits from Euro MotoElectrics, they come with the filter and shims and the magic o-ring. They make different kits depending on whether you have an oil cooler or not. My bike takes 20W-50, and I imagine the R100 does too! Some people are really particular on brand, but I’m not, controversial as that may be haha.

    hi, what kind of oil you used? 20w50 or 10w40?

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      20W50 conventional oil! Next time I changed it, I think I used Castrol GTX.

    • @tommasocarlosardo327
      @tommasocarlosardo327 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ihutch92 If I used a 10w40 oil specifically for boxer engines would be okay anyway?

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tommasocarlosardo327 You should use whatever the manual says to! Which I think for all airheads is 20w50, except for extreme temperature circumstances. If you ride a lot in the winter, a 10w40 would be okay, but if you live in a hot climate or mostly ride in the summer, definitely stick to 20w50.

    • @tommasocarlosardo327
      @tommasocarlosardo327 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ihutch92 OK, so if I live at a temperature of about 20 degrees is better a 20w50 specific for motorcycles. Thanks

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Assuming you mean 20° Celsius, yes. :) I just checked my book and it recommends 10w40 only for temperatures between -30 and 5 Celsius. 20w50 is for -10 to 40 Celsius, so that’s definitely what you want!

    hi, when do you check the valve clearance ?

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Every 5,000 miles. I tend to do my oil change and valve clearance together. Valves first, then ride around to make sure everything feels right and warm the bike up, then oil change.

      @@ihutch92 Thank you. I'm from Corsica and i hope to ride a R 65/1980 or a R 60/1972 soon. This place and those bikes would go so well together !..

    You didn’t show the part where you drop the drain plug into the waste oil pan. Along with the bad words.

    • @ihutch92

      This one went smoothly, but the next oil change featured one of the rubber ends of the old filter getting stuck on the mount peg in the case haha. Definitely some bad words there.
