Riding 1,200 miles to Michigan and back on my BMW R65
Every year I make at least one trip to visit my family, specifically on my motorcycle. Most years, I'd go to Indiana, but this year we decided to convene the clan in Michigan.
So I changed the oil on my trusty 1980 BMW R65 and set off across Appalachia and the Midwest to get there.

Going to an Airheads tech day in Maryland
มุมมอง 3.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
We got some bizarrely warm weather recently, and it just happened to be the same weekend as a tech day up in Maryland. So I hopped on the bike and rode up to hang out with some other airheads and to change the oil and seals in my front forks! If you have an airhead and want to join days like these, you can join the ABC at airheads.org. It's really how I've found others keeping these old machine...
Exploring Around Brunwsick MD by Motorcycle

Fall comes relatively late out here on the east coast. When Appalachia’s already lost all its leaves and the midwest only has a scattered few left on the trees, we’ve usually still got bursts of red and orange foliage. We also still get some decent warm days a bit later into the season. And this was one of those days-the sky was clear, the last few leaves were still worth seeing, and I decided ...

BMW Airhead Road Trip: DC to Savannah
มุมมอง 15Kปีที่แล้ว
I recently found myself with three weeks in between jobs to do whatever I want. Naturally, the first thing that sprang to my mind was to go on a road trip. So I laid plans to head south again since the weather was still intermittently chilly here in DC. This time, the final goal was Savannah. The weeklong trip that followed saw me visit a bigfoot museum, break down in the rain, find Venus flytr...

Quiet evening spent changing the oil on my BMW airhead R65

Doing basic maintenance tasks like valve adjustments and oil changes on old bikes is a contemplative task-something to do slowly, with a bit of music in the background, and beer at hand. You look after the machine and the machine will look after you. Not a how-to video, but just five relaxing minutes of changing the oil on my 1980 BMW R65.

So satisfying and to finish with that sweet engine sound, great bike.
Impressive trip on your R65. Congratulations on traveling to see your family, camping, fishing and exploring the countryside on your Airhead. Mapping a route and following it looks like a great way to get to your next destination.
It was a great trip! Tho to be fair, I used google maps to get around, the paper maps were purely for movie magic haha. Though I have been toying with getting an Amish GPS, one of those rally racing direction scrollers.
Man you used to be super fast at the Isle of Man TT.
My Scottish twin always had more of the go fast itch than me I suppose haha
So nice these kind of adventures on a charming classic motorcycle, rather then the cold modern tech-loaded new ones. Enjoyed the video!
Keepin’ it simple’s the way to go. 🫡
Great video, thanks. 😊
Excellent video. Subscribed. Cheers from an oilhead.

At 3:22 yes those are purple Martin houses. Someone probably already mentioned that in the comments. Thank you for your content.
They’re definitely some funky birdhouses. :) Glad you enjoyed watching.
Own an ‘80 with 13-k miles. On market this spring. With Luftmeister bags.
Hey fellow R65 rider.Your look like you had a good time! Where did you get the bungee cords for your saddle bags?
Hey! I got the idea from Bay City Restoration, another TH-cam channel. They’re just regular maritime cover bungees, if you look them up you can either order them online or you could probably find them at a local boat shop. :)
I agree with everyone. You have caught a niche viewers perspective on a very lovely bike. Great narrative too
Mind telling me where you bought the kickstand on your R65? I need to get one for next summer’s riding.
Can’t remember which retailer, I think BeemerShop, but it’s a Brown side stand! Highly recommend. :)
Did you replace the original kick stand? YOu made it look so easy to flip it out. I can never use mine as it has an awkward location and very sensitive springs. No choice but to use the centerstand. Great video. Mine is same vintage with 13k
Sure did! Honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done for the bike. I got a Brown side stand for it. $160 is frankly pretty expensive for the amount of material in it, but I’ve never regretted spending it. Honestly can’t recommend it highly enough. :)
Thanks. Will check on this. At 78, it is becoming a workout to use the center stand.
Hello Ian. I had a similar problem with my R45’s speedo/odo. My odometer stopped working correctly . It moves in 10k KM chunks randomly. Last time it worked was 79k KM. How did you fix yours? All the best!
Mine was simple issue of the cable breaking, I just replaced it! Another thing to check is the spot where it connects to the transmission-there’s a little plastic piece in there that you can rub against the speedo cable and stop it if it’s aligned wrong. If the cable spins freely on either end and the connections are good, then it could be an actual issue with the speedo itself, which would be hard to fix. :(
@@ihutch92the speedo works fine. It’s the odometer that’s on the blink. I’d have to assume the cable from the front wheel to the clock is fine. I will need to open it up to have a closer look, I fear. Thanks for the quick reply and thanks for posting the lovely videos of your trips.
Great videos, Keep calling out the town names it makes it fun to follow your route on google maps. Also your riding style is perfect, like they say… there are bold riders & there are old riders… but there’s no old bold riders! In 2017 I bought a 1974 60/6 in Philadelphia and did a road trip to San Francisco. They are without doubt some of the nicest bikes to ride, also with old tech there is a good chance you can fix most problems with the tool kit at the side of the road. Your video’s remind me that the most amazing thing about the States is you could literally spend your entire lifetime on a road trip and never see it all.
Glad you’re enjoying them! :) Like you say, always plenty more to explore so I’ll keep makin’ em.
These videos are simply excellent! I love the way they are made, from the view in the saddle going down the road, to the camp set up and everything in between. Reminds me of why I am in the middle of my own R65 restoration and the road trips I also hope to make. I might even forgo the motel and get back to camping again since Ian makes it almost look fun again. Just like back in my 20s. Thanks, Ian! And please, keep the video’s coming. I tend to binge on them..!
Love to hear that another R65 will be on the road soon! The more the merrier. :)
Handsome Motorcycle. They really need to bring these back.
Nice video. As a fellow rider, I enjoy when roads and towns are identified. Keep on riding.
You should always bring a spare plug wire. That will ensure that you won’t have a plug wire failure and something else that you don’t have a part for will. 😂
I’ve learned my lesson with this one haha I keep more spares on me now
Love how you take a picture of you snd your wife in your travels. Keep the shinny side up.
The ever present reminder to ride safely. 🫡
i had an 82 as my first bike. that thing was so much fun. i miss it so much. and yes, the suspension did have me feeling a little unsafe in corners...and the brakes in general haha
Yeah the brakes don’t inspire confidence haha. I ended up replacing the rear springs and shocks on mine with some Progressives and it definitely was an improvement on corner stability. Still won’t be touching any knees down any time soon though haha
About 8 weeks ago I bought '79 R65 having watched one of your other videos. Insurance and paperwork kept me local for the first couple of weeks and Berlin's winter is starting to set in the past two, so a longer trip out of town will have to wait until next year. But this video has me wondering: how many country's borders can I cross on the BMW next riding season?
Now those are the kind of questions to ask! Certainly you’ll cross more than me. :) Ride safe
Nice Vlog. What brand/type of Pen is that please?
Thanks! Not sure what you mean though-what pen?
@@ihutch92 The Ink pen you where using to draw on the Maps.
Ah! Sorry, total space cadet haha. They’re calligraphy brush pens, Zebra brand I believe. Had them laying around from Chinese lessons haha
Lovely motorcycle and great video. I really enjoyed watching this.
I love your movies, and whole approach to capturing the experience. Deceptively simple, and organic. Thank you for sharing. I am curious what you use for navigation. There does not appear to be an outboard GPS anywhere in sight?!
Thanks, I try to keep things simple. :) And I use Google maps, avoid highways most of the time. I just turn on the audio instructions and connect it to my comms unit. I've got a Sena to play music and stuff too, the driving instructions are really good to be honest!
Awesome video! What camera equipment do you use?
I logged a lot of miles on a ‘83 R100RS. The sound of that airhead brings back lots of good memories. Love the Krauser bags too. Moved on to BMWs after years of riding HDs. Didn’t know motorcycles could handle so good 😊. Traded the RS and a ‘88 K75S in on a K100RS-4V. ‘91 I think.
When I first put the bags on my bike I thought they looked kinda goofy and too big, but honestly they're so convenient I could never take them of now haha. Love 'em. :)
I was born and raised in Lorain County Ohio and have been to Findlay State Park literally a million times. It was the go to fishing spot for ease of use. Camping in the winter was always fun. My brother still ice fishes there every winter. Safe journeys.
It was a lovely little spot! Not many curvy roads around though haha. :)
@@ihutch92 yep. Had to move to NC to get some curves:)
Never had a beemer, but the old ones do peak my interest.. Be safe
If you want to get into older bikes, they seem like the way to go! There's a really great community around them too.
Bonus points for Salt Creek on the Banjo!
Gotta have some good American roots music. :)
Hello, great Video. I'm a bit jealous because over here in Germany traffic is more crowded and it seems you're able to drive miles without stopping... Your R65 looks similar to my R45 (with sidecar) from 1982. Even the sound of the fuel switch is the same. Great video! Wish I could make it to the US and driving tours like you've done. Gruß von Ralf
See I'm jealous of your location, because in the time it takes me to go from DC to Michigan, you could get to France, Italy, Czechia, so many places! I'd love to do a big Euro road trip one of these days. :)
Seeing you visit my old haunts is making me homesick...keep up the good work :-).
No wind shield? I started mounting a windshield back in the 80's and didn't look back. There are so many advantages, the main being comfort against bugs, wind and rain. A few years back I collided with a turkey buzzard going 50 mph, without the windshield it would have been in my lap. Even an inexpensive handlebar mount is better than nothing, at least you wear a helmet.
Oof hitting a turkey buzzard does not sound fun. I'm sure one of these days I'll end up adding one, just haven't found one I like yet.
Great video! Thanks for posting!
The R65 looks like a decent long tour bike. Thanks for the scenic tour.
It's no Goldwing, but if you stick to backroads, it's a very servicable option. :)
Your trip reminds me of my trips. I have a 03' BMW R 1200 CL that hums along 300 miles a day for that secluded camp ground to pitch a tent and build a fire. My meals are usually freeze dried in a bag, granola bars and gas station sandwiches. Although I'll stop at a bar & grill or a family restaurant a few times. Motels are an option if the price is right and it's ground level with a door. I just got back from a 2200 mile trip to Colorado and back. My wife lets me go because she says I need to get it out of my system. This is my 4th western trip from Illinois since getting back into motorcycles. I've learned to take it easy, stop often and enjoy the views. No more 600 mile days and interstates. I noticed you were fishing and reminds me I forgot to take my compact fishing outfit. Really enjoyed your video.
Ah that all sounds great. I get your wife's feeling of getting it out of the system. When you're home, the itch just keeps getting stronger til you can get out again. :)
Great video. Nice bike. What are the fasteners you are using on the saddlebags?
Thanks! They’re marine cover loops, you can get a ten pack online. Takes a little drilling, but a much better solution than the big straps around the outside. :)
Did somebody slash your seat while you took that little climb? I was noticing that you had that comfy aftermarket seat after the cool church/coffeeshop but no cut in it, then it looked like a cut after the hike. That would certainly ruin what was a great ride-
No, unfortunately it’s just a crack that had started already when I got the bike but finally cracked open recently. :(
Loved this….thank you for this great interview.
Good video. 50 across WV is fun on a motorcycle.
Probably my favorite one near home for me! Excellent pavement. :)
New subscriber! I like your laid back approach I have a couple of questions about your bike,is there a reason you opt for mid grade rather than regular grade gas.And also I noticed that you have modified your side bags with those elastic bands that keep them closed. Please elaborate on how you did that.I’ve got a R100 with identical bags.looking forward to future adventures, appreciate you!
The compression ratio for the R65 is juuust enough to need a bit better than 87, so I usually go for midgrade to make sure there’s no risk of pinging. And the elastic bands are elastic marine cover loops! I just drilled holes in the top of the cases, added some glue, and they’re perfect for it. You can get them really cheap, and it’s a much nicer looking option than the big bands around the whole case haha
@@ihutch92 marine cover loops nice, what did you use for the posts?where can I find them?great idea!
I like your videos and love the old boxer, not a fan of your veiled political opinions. I don’t watch motorcycle videos for politics. On a more pleasant note, I wear Aerostich gear all the time so no need to change in and out of rain gear.
Ah well, opinions are like assholes, everybody has one haha. :) I’ll have to look into aerostitch stuff! It sounds pleasant to not have to deal with haha
I just found your channel this morning by accident. This is a fantastic video with a nice blend of narration, actual motorcycle riding noises, and wonderful footage.
I have a BMW R65 since new, I Love it!I bought it in Maryland in 1984, and brought it to Brazil since then. Its my every Day bike! Very Nice vídeo!
Dang that’s a great service life for it! Glad it’s still providing joy. :)
Let me know when you want to do a cross country trip.
That sounds like a proper motocycle.
Hello from Mexico, dude I love your videos. You should do a video of your gear, would love to do a trip one day like you man keep the video coming plis.
Honestly I don't have all that much gear to present! Though I guess that could be the point. I try to pack pretty light and keep it simple, that's part of the joy for me. :)
Beautiful day for a ride. Thanks for sharing. ...BTW @ the 1:14 mark that deer on the right shoulder spooked me (-
It spooked me too! I think I scared it more than it scared me though in fairness haha

Indeed not, I'm his much slower namesake haha
