  • Playing about with my analogue video art rig to create some beautiful feedback. Featuring the Synthwave Killah from ‪@mezkalinvideogear6210‬.

    I post all of the music I make, including WAV stems; sample packs; Dirtywave M8 song bundles; collections of video textures; early access to videos; and a whole pile of other stuff on Patreon. I know I know, I hate doing this as well, but if you like what I do and want to get more of it, while also helping me offset some of my ludicrous gear purchases, this is the best place to do it:

    If you just want individual sample packs or downloads of video footage to use in your own projects, get them on Gumroad here: gumroad.com/al...
    If you're in the market for new gear, my favourite place to find new and interesting synthesizers and other electronic music gear is Signal Sounds. They are based in Glasgow, but ship all over the place and often have stuff nobody else does. Find them at www.signalsoun...

    Your best video in a while. Remember doing this the very cheap way back in school.

    So cool getting to see how some of this stuff works, i would get lost in your Lab for hours, probably days! lol And I totally dig the piece at the end here man!! 🙌🐀

    Really cool stuff! And congrats to own a Synthwave KILLAH (which currently is out of stock - I wish I would have been earlier to the party...).
    Which TBC do you use (or how do you stabilize your signal)? Whenever I enter the V4 with a slightly glitched signal, I end with a blue screen.
    Keep up the great work!
    Cheers

    Good video!! I was wondering if use a Time Base Corrector with your Synthwave Killah?

      I try not to as they often change the character of things. I have to if I am using an HDMI capture card, or the Roland P10... and sometimes even running into the Edirol v4 direct as its TBC sucks. But here no additional tbc in the mix other than the Edirol's built-in one!

    Oh man.. I'm way interested.. I studied fine art video in art school under Tony Oursler.. we didn't too much explore this rabbit hole.. but.. you VERY much get me excited about doing something with this stuff.. I have an idea for a kinda crazy video style that's very.. idk, animation / visual effects.. and I feel like I need to find some kinda a way to bring this sorta stuff into that... but for the moment I'm too poor to afford anything.

      That's super cool. I have literally zero artistic education - just messing around. I'm curious to hear more about your idea for animation/visual effects!!

    God I love video glitch. I remember the days of wanting to be a VJ back in the 90s... Now someone just needs to make the Kiki wipe from the Video Toaster as an OBS plugin....

    That CRT flickering in the background is almost uncannily 3D, I guess it's the way you have your camera set and how it is able to capture the pulsing of the CRTs.
    It almost reminds me of the really bad 80s FX of Dr Who.

      I think I know what it is, given the screens are not perfectly flat, where seeing the afterglow of the regressing image, but the screen on an angle has a bulbous effect due to it being a lens of sorts, so where seeing the dimming image off angle and it gives a remarkable effect.
      I miss my CRTs.

      It does look pretty 3D in this for some reason. Glad you noticed!!

    ah, I used to make videos for my band with various recursive feedback techniques, sometimes involving DVEs, caption cameras, oscilloscopes & whatnot. this one was done with a couple of channels of Abekas A53 DVE & the matte generators on a GVG-300 vision mixer, & 'seeding' it with noise from somewhere, possibly a detuned off-air receiver.
    the few benefits of doing night-shifts in a broadcast studio (this was at Mtv in the early 90s)...

      @@StephenMcLeod ... I did not use them together yet... they have different flavours... 3trinsrgb is video vhs glitchy goodness and brings me back to max headroom... hypno is a math monster and has all of my attention at the moment.... but sooner or later I will start to mix them... by the way, photomosh is an awesome software for video mangling too...

    • @StephenMcLeod
      @StephenMcLeod  ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on what you're after! Cheapest way is to get a camera and point it at the screen you are recording. Run that through something like Lumen on Mac and you can get all sorts of crazy things. If you want hardware options, it gets more complicated, but things like the EYESY from Critter & Guitari and Hypno from Sleepy Circuits are both grand.

    How does the Synthwave Killah compare to the Opti Glitch?

    • @StephenMcLeod
      @StephenMcLeod  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Analog gear like that is very difficult to compare, as there is often not really shared words that we can use to explain the effects. However, Synthwave Killah is a colour processor, so it has significant colour shifts at its heart - whereas Opti Glitch is more of a video enhancer that's been bent, so it's less focussed on big colour changes, and more... glitch. To be honest though even that isn't quite accurate. It's too hard to describe!

      The buttons and front dials do work, yeah - though not as they originally would have been intended. The switch gives slightly different effects depending on the setting.@@SPOD_ZONE
