LOP Ssenyonyi calls for more SAGE money

With Uganda joining the rest of the World to celebrate the international day of older persons today, a section of legislators are calling on government to double the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment, SAGE, a social Protection Programme to support the elderly. Led by the leader of opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, the MPs say the award is too little to deal with older person’s needs. Started in 2010, the program targeted 100 older persons per Sub County but the number of beneficiaries has gradually increased. This year, government lowered the SAGE age limit to benefit more older persons. The call came as the legislators paid a visit to the Mapeera Bakateyamba Home of the Elderly in Nalukolongo.
