Often a forgotten model in the Focus line-up, it was really ahead of its time back in the early 2000's. Today, this models interior really hasn't aged well in our eyes, but the exterior styling and driving dynamics still impress. If you happen to find one of these rare vehicles on the used car market, snatch it up while you can.

    Way too critical. This car was a good looking car for its time.

    I remember seeing 2 of these cars in a track meet I went to a couple of years ago. Those guys drove their SVT to the limit. I couldn't catch up to them at all. My car is AWD and turbo, but heavy and I know they were not boosted at all, all N/A and they just drove amazingly... I liked the SVT Focus back then, I still do now and they are quite rare...

    cogsworth? really?
    it's cosworth. they are a legendary english engine builder. they have worked with ford for decades to make high performance models.

    I miss my SVT :( the design of the interior is like that. curves and sharp lines. They are not gaps. It's like that.

    You are terribly confused. The ZX3 and ZX5 were not trim levels. They were body styles: 3 door hatch, sedan, and 5 door hatch. ZX-4 might actually be a trim level of the sedan, but you'd have to look. You could get a ZX3 or 5 in different trims, for example, SE. There were not three, but four engines. The 110 and 130 hp 2.0 liter engines were completely unrelated (the former, the SOHC, the other venerable, but by that time aged and outgoing DOHC Zetec). The SVT engine was a version of the later. In 2004, there was another available engine too, the 2.3, which carried forward. I couldn't make it past the second minute, so I'm not sure what misinformation came after that point. Don't just make stuff up. Do research.

      2003 had the 2.3L Duratec as well, I've got one in my driveway. It's amazing how much more different the 2.3L feels than the Zetec too.

      Unless it's a fancy brand he hates on the car. Unless it has top of the line materials at a $20,000 it has problems. He sounds so bitchy all the time.

    Easily one of the best handling front drive cars ever ...
    Made my R53 Mini seem awkward in comparison
    The interior is just fine ... This guy sounds like he's talking about an
    Antique ... Really weird.

    I have a 2007 ST. Its the best car I have ever owned. 12 years of reliable trouble free driving and still goes like stink. I did a K+N intake and Magnaflow exhaust. I still love this car. It also has independent rear suspension and apparently some Volvo handling tweaks.

      I’ve had to argue with friends that Ford DID make an ST model in 2007. It’s tough to find. Mine was gray, 5 speed, and had a mesh black/red seats. I prefer hatchbacks like my current 2016 ST, but the 07 year was fun!

    Reminds me of my 2001 Focus ZX3; no SVT, but it's still quick as hell with its 2.0 130hp motor, at least through 45 miles per hour. Can't imagine how much more fun it'd be with that SVT and the 6-speed. Great review.

    I own a 2002 Ford Focus Svt/ST170 and owned it since 2005. This particular Ford Focus Svt in the video has the European Appearance Package having the black Recaro bucket seats and 15 spoke wheels. The 3-door version out sold and was more popular than the 5-door version. The rarest Ford Focus SVT came in Competition Orange. I believe that color came out in the last production year of this vehicle. It's a rare car indeed and you don't see very many of them on the road these days!

    Thanks for the vid, there is surprisingly little footage of the SVT Focus on TH-cam. I have the 03 5-door, 70k miles. One of the most important features of the Focus is the extreme headroom and ability to accommodate almost any size driver. The "tall bubble" shape is pretty much standard for all hatchbacks now. The rear seats are indeed vinyl/leatherette, still made by Recaro. The dash might look dated but compare to other cars of the time: all squares and rectangles.

    I loved my SVT but wish I could have found a clean 4 door EAP version like the one shown here. I've driven the Focus ST and SVT, and I prefer the driving qualities of the SVT more. Sure the ST feels more refined, but for shear driving fun on twisty roads, it was a lot more fun to push the SVT to the limit than the ST. The car is slow off the line, but with a good brake compound I could stop late, and really carry speed through the corners.

    Had one of these a few years ago. Great car! The steering feel on these cars is great, better than my Gen1 speed3. One interesting thing about that engine is that it was originally supposed to be supercharged, Ford decided against it at the last minute, hence the long gear ratios.

    Thanks for reviewing the SVT! Used to own a 2005 ZX4 ST. Had to make a choice between ZX4 ST (less HP but more torque) and this one. I was very disappointed with the lack of torque on this car, which makes it feel kind of like a Honda. I do love the better handling/suspension on the SVT. Hope you get to review a ZX4 ST some day..

    This was back in 2005. I was looking at a 2004 Ford Focus sedan back then. In late May 2005 that I gotten a 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 SES trim level. That car was fun to drive for almost 7 years. I was in a bad car accident in the car. The car accident was caused by the other driver. He wasn’t paying attention. My Focus was a light green color.

    i have almost the same car, i have the 2003 svt 5 door, without the European appearance package, which includes stock headlights, basic svt seats with stock blue inserts, and no traction control, those tires look a little narrow for what it came with, the stock tire size is 215 45r 17 those look like 195's to me (i could be wrong) i absolutely love the thing, sound system sounds great, corners amazingly and is great on the highway, the svt also came with rear disk brakes.

    Zetec, it is a 2.0L version of the engines bigger brother, the Duratec. Which was developed by Porsche and sold to ford in the mid 90's. A 2.5L V6 (duratec) came in the contour svt which are also cool as hell. Then a 3.0L (which I beleive is still offered in vehicles such as the Fusion and Mazda6) was also developed and they originally put that into the Taurus and the Escape.

    • @nezerac
      @nezerac 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So is the escort, mondeo (fusion), xr4ti, scorpio, basically ford has tried to bring their euro awesomeness to the states for over 30yrs now. Also the Focus st is a throwback to the ford escort rs turbo. The rear end and handling and suspension are very similar. Look at motorweeks review of the 1990 ford escort on youtube. They talk about how the rear steps out when you toss into a corner. this was back in 1990 mind you. Before mazda gayed everything up with the japanese idea of performance. What you SHOULD'VE been correcting him on was the fact he keeps say "cogsworth" when it's frickin COSWORTH!!

    • @dilawer321
      @dilawer321 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nezerac Focus ST170 wasnt a throwback to the rs turbo (i owned an rs turbo series 2) it was the replacement for xr3i's, and the xr3i's were the succesors to cars like the mk1 and mk2 escort mexico's etc untill they all turned front wheel drive, but yeah i hate the way he says COSWORTH haha

    • @nezerac
      @nezerac 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      dilawer321
      Ya if you owned an S2 you evidently live across the pond. Not gonna argue Euro Scorts, Focuses, or anything Ford with you. lol. You guys got the best of Ford. How much are RS Cosworth's running right now?

    • @dilawer321
      @dilawer321 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      nezerac Depends which ones, they vary in price as back in the days most people who owned them were street racers lol so most have been crashed and modified etc, very hard to find a standard one nowadays, also it depends which model, a nice escort cosworth you can get for around 15k, sierra saphire cosworths start from around 7k but an original 3 door sierra rs500 can go for 50k nowadays, crazy prices, i wouldnt say we got the best fords though lol if i lived in america i wouldnt care about a 300bhp focus when i can have a 500bhp mustang, or then again if i had the money i would probably have both lol unfortunately i dont :(

    • @nezerac
      @nezerac 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in the states so 500hp mustangs are kind of common. Especially in cali. and is that in pounds? lmao woooww. pricey! lol

    For this generation depending on model year I think, there was the sedan, 3 door hatchback, 5 door hatchback, and a wagon. My grandma had a 2001 Ford Focus 3 door hatchback.

    MsSnEmily I'm super sorry for not replying sooner. Some things you can put on the Focus to make it more aggressive or just a bit more fun to drive are: A cold air intake, like the one Steeda offers that looks clean and gets rid of about 5lbs of plastic! Another good idea is to invest in a new suspension, the one I have been eye balln' for years is the SVT suspension which I know will make the car feel sporty and even improve the handling by reducing that body roll in corners! I know from experience the hatchback with bad/old or even soft suspension will feel like it's going to fall over in any turn you make! :) I hope that helps, if you're even going to get a Focus by the time you read this LMAO! Check out Steeda.com for other parts too!

    My Mum had a 2004 blue Ford Focus Cl 1.8l 88kw of power 5 speed manual (118hp)
    Nothing ever went wrong for 7 years except one engine problem at 6 years nedded new cords that connect to where the spark plugs are. This happened when my mum was driving up a steep hill that we drive up everyday and obiviously had worn the engine out, there was a knock and mum said there was hardly any power but luckily we mad it home. Traded it in and got 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 5 speed manual both great cars.

    This is one of the best handling cars of its class and still today!! cornering is so fun!! And, how can you compare it to the new st? its not turbo!!!!! To me it's the best 2.0 hot hatch you can have. the cams on this engine and the pops when you rev this make it so special! It gives the street racing confidence to take V8s, turbo hondas, nissan z's and cars you generally wouldn't with its competitors. and how bout the front end and that fat rear bumper?

      It was certainly the best handling, what with the ControlBlade rear suspension.
