Wow, the main riff for this track is syncopated to all hell. I'll try to explain as best I can. The song is in standard 4/4 time -but the very beginning starts on beat -*-two-*- of the first measure (this is actually true of every time he starts that riff in the entire song). So the opening count goes -*-2-*- /3/4/1/2/3/4/1/2/3/4... This is very noticeable starting at --4:06-- or so. If you start counting from --4:01-- you will be able to count 4 beat bars quite easily until the riff turns around. If you keep counting 4 you will eventually move into the turnaround for the next passage and it will sound on time again.- It's all about training your ear to hear where the 1 beat is -through all the stressed weak, or 'off', beats- so you can get the counting down (I had to slow the video down for a while and slowly speed it up.) After listening to the original Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly I finally found where the 1 beat of each measure is. On this song, right at the opening, the drummer is hitting the snare on every *off-beat.* The true beats (on-beats) are in-between the snare hits. The song actually starts on beat 1.5 (one *and* ). Once out of the opening riff the drummer switches to playing the snare in typical fashion. At 4:06 the guitar starts the same riff (I checked in Audacity and it is the same) but the snare drum is now *on beat* during the riff until the turn around. This is ridiculously hard to count and even more difficult to play. These guys are beyond amazing.
-And I think I just found out why it sounds so funky. I noticed the beginning sounds like it had something cut out for the first beat. The start is too perfectly harsh to be instruments starting to play. They were already playing and were cut out in a computer and the song starts on beat 2. Interestingly, the song ends on a 1 beat, the first beat of the measure, and then lets the vibrations in the instruments die out. If you count through the ending (keep counting after the last beat) and hit the HOME button on the keyboard as you count beat two you get an almost perfect loop.- The loop does work but my beat count was off. See above.
