Dale thanks for the comment, that's cool you still have those shirts and a lot of good memories. The reason I do all thees videos is everyone can enjoy, so glad you are.Was always fun having those big races here as well.
Thanks for this video Mr Gary Bailey. I was at this race. From NC a hour away. Lake Sugar Tree races were a big deal to us amateurs who were l lucky enough to be able to race there. Always great races when we got to watch the NATIONALS there. Was also there as a teenager for the TRANS AM race in I believe 1977. What a thrill to see all the Europeans I had only read about in motocross and dirt bike magazines. Became a big David Bailey fan watching him on that track. Still have tshirt from the Trans Am and first Nationals ran there, and even a Gary Bailey's cycle barn shirt. Thanks for the memories
Gary Bailey you taught me 1981 Freedom Hills Stanton, Michigan I was on a come back mission from a near death accident I learned so much from you and David Bailey. You told me become one with your bike. Go slow get down your feel and control over your bike. Back then upto today you both have had a close place in my Heart ❤️. To come from Ohio and become sponsored again a guy who is from Ohio We already know the Ohio State Michigan rivalry to be an Ohio racer and with you and David Bailey's help I was sponsored by Team Dynamic Yamaha noticed back then my Team Mate Keith Bowen we are friends with your help I'm very Grateful for what you did for me and what you guys continue to do that's why I do what I do today bridge the gap love you both today it's always a Honor and a pleasure my friend beautiful You Guys are MY HERO'S. LOVE YOU BOTH GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS SINCERELY YOURS, Troy Stoll 👍 😊 ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Troy in 1985 I watched a Moto race in Milan Mich (next to the dragstrip) they raced MX on Friday nights in the 80s. Sometimes a very fast Ohio kid would come and race on a DMC KX80 number 999. Do you know who he is?
I got to race there in 1985. For some reason, Jonny'0 and David Bailey were both there running the 250 class, the track was super rough and they walked away from everyone. Must have been an non-National weekend. I remember doing the big double, first and only time for me. Cool to be on the track with those guys. Awesome to see this video. You wouldn't have any videos from White Oak would you?
Thank you Mr. Bailey! I never got to see many of these races back in the day, had to wait for cycle news or MXA to read about them. It is really cool to be able to watch them now.
I took a week long class at Bailey Riding school ~1990. Incredible time. My very next races I got holeshot like 5 times in a row. I didn't have a place to practice all I had learned so I never competed well. But my time at Lake Sugar Tree will always be remembered. Also got to meet David and ride a few laps on his supercross track!
Thank you for sharing this Gary. This was the first national I ever went to. I couldn't believe how fast those guys were. I raced at Sugartree several times from the late 80's to the mid 90's. It was like hallowed ground to me. It would be so awesome if this track could get back on the national circuit.
It looks like Alan King has quite the sense of humour! Before the start of the 500cc moto 2, RIck Johnson is bent over prepping his starting area, and Alan King comes up and gets right behind him....like he's gonna give him some prison style lovin'....lmao! RJ didn't look amused! 🤣
DAMN! Wish I never saw this! THE HORROR of the 1977 AMA Amateur National will AGAIN have me waking up in a cold sweat and screaming... " GET TO THE LIFE BOATS! And PUT ON YOUR LIFE PRESERVER!" I would have done better....ON MY DAD'S ROKON! The Oct event was NO PLACE for a 125! (12th over-all.....#4)
Is the track still in operation today? Would love to ride it today ! Great video 👍 every video from you is MX history , David still and always will be one of the best ever! God bless!
Thanks anyways Gary, it was cool to ride in a moto with those guys anyways, even if just an amateur event. Any idea how stock David and Johnny'O's 250's were, I'm guessing they were just practice bikes most likely, not their race bikes.

Another awesome Gary Bailey video!
