- How to clean the sensors on an AmazonBasics Cross Cut Paper Shredder
AmazonBasics Shredder are reliable shredders. But there are some hiccups that cause it to stop working. The most common issues are related to the front and back sensors. Front sensors recognizes if there is paper coming inside the unit and the back sensor sense if the head of shredder is inside the bucket. Clean front sensor by removing the paper jam then use napkin to wipe down the sensor. The back sensor doesn't work because it is not pushed in all the way.
*Warning. If you open up the unit, make sure to tighten up the screws hard when putting it back together. I noticed mine fell when it wasn't tight enough.

YESSSSSS! The paper towel trick on the front sensor did it! It was driving me crazy that it wouldn't STOP when in auto mode. Thanks for taking the time to film this video!

Yes! Worked for me also.
My shredder gets monthly service with pure Canola oil between two sheets of paper, but recently started running all the time in Auto mode. I took it apart and gave it a thorough cleaning from paper shreds and paper dust. I put it back together and had the same always running issue...
Luckily, I came across your video first and sure enough, the front sensor was the problem. Like everybody else, your video saved my otherwise excellent shredder.

We took apart the shredder to get a jam cleared and didn't pay attention to where the rear sensor was placed. WE couldn't figure it out until we watched this video! Thanks!

Well done video, you didn't try to be a comedian, or talk us to death before covering what people watch the video to learn. You didn't put in swearing, which I appreciate because I watch these with my daughters and grand kids. I wish that I had seen your video before I pulled the top off of mine. My symptoms were not automatically turning off when set to "automatic", as the sensor became more dirty it finally would not start when paper was inserted to shred. Clean the front sensor, now all is good.

Hi, Filip! It was the back sensor. I watched your tutorial twice, fixed once. And lubricated it. The shredder has happily gone back to work instead of to the dump!

Thank you thank you Sir. Dismantled and cleaned the front led bulbs and mine now shuts off AUTOMATICALLY!! I saved my self the hassle of buying a whole new paper shredder and throwing a perfectly good shredder away. Simple and easy fix. DONE!!!

Very helpful. My problem was it had the green light, sounded like it was working both directions but it was all white in the slot. It was totally jammed at the slot with bits of shredded paper. I managed to clean it out with a knife and then it shredded great. Thank you for the help!

Wowwww your video was so helpful. My shredder light for misalign was light up red and have been trying to reposition the lid but it didn’t work. Went back to Amazon to read reviews and the questions but nothing was helpful. Came on TH-cam and clicked on this video. Even though you didn’t mention anything about the misalignment and how to fix it you mentioned about the sensor and after finding it, I repositioned the lid again and boom I heard a click. thannkksssss. I rarely thumb up videos unless it’s something I really really like or is helpful and you sir have got one from me :)

Thank you for this video I was able to turn on my shredder. I spilled tea on it, my dog chewed the cord and it’s still working. But when I opened it to clean and put it back together it won’t turn on. Till I decided to get help from youtube and found you. Thank you!!!

We have one that works in reverse but will not fed paper at first I thought it was one of the sensor bulbs as it looks as if it has blown but my Eagle eye has noticed yours is the same . Looks like its back to the scratting of the head to find out why it won't work feeding paper in .

Wow I was just about to throw my shredder away! All I had to do was clean the sensor with a paper towel and voila it worked!

Appreciate the tip! The front sensor on my unit wasn't visible like yours so skeptically I used the paper towel method (sprayed with glass cleaner) you showed. After a few cleaning passes my shredder starting working again.

Hey thanks for this comprehensive video, this is the only one that helped long time ago. Unfortunately now my paper shredder wont detect the paper so it doesn't turn on and off automatically. I opened the unit and cleaned both front sensors really well but they won't turn when I put a piece of paper in it. They will only turn if I manually put the setting on Auto or on Reverse but I have to manually shut it by putting it on Off. It is annoying to do all that manually to shred a piece of paper. Is it possible the sensors are dead entirely? Anyway to get replacement parts or anything else I can try? I cleaned the front sensors really well so I don't understand what's wrong.

Thank you Thank You Thank. You are a shredder saver!! And saved me cash as well. Shredder was about to go out as I simply couldn't clear the jam first of all. I even tried to take it to bits and couldn't work out how the rear sensor fitted back in the case. No problem once I had seen it. Shredder now working happily again :-)

Great video. The back sensor fix came in handy. One problem though, my shredder just has a red light now and it's not working. Any idea what's causing this?
Did you use it continuously for 20-30 minutes? It might be overheated.
@@filipjtech so it was jammed and i cleaned it by unscrewing the lid. Once assembled again and turned on, all i get is a red light. I waited 30+ mins to turn again and still red.
That is weird. Only thing I can think of is something blocking the front sensor. Do you have the newest model shredder or older?

I have found that compressed air across the sensor location fixed my issue of the shredder not turning off. Didn't have to disassemble anything.

@@filipjtech Thanks for showing the inside and pointing out the black sensor as well, this might be key for me. I opened it up and cleaned the sensors as in my case compressed air only worked temporarily. The black sensor adjacent to the clear one was dirty despite strong air cleaning. I think this might fix it properly this time. Cheers

Excellent trouble shooting video. Shredder wouldn't feed paper. Followed your steps and with flashlight found some shredded paper jammed and freezing shredder drum from feeding paper. Probably happened from me reversing that backed up small pieces jamming movement.

Great video, but didn't solve my problem. I cleaned the front sensor, so that's good. However, my problem is that the shredder will not turn off after paper goes through (when on auto-sense mode). Any suggestions?

The front silver part is sticking up for me and I can hear something moving inside the shredder. It Turns on, reverses and shreds, but it is noisy and it is not shredding the paper completely. Any ideas on what this could be?

Hi, I have an amazon micro cut shredder. After oiling with fellowes oil by running the bottle back and forth once (a method fellowes said to use), the reverse function stopped working the next day. This was the first time I oiled the shredder with this method, prior to this I've always used oiled sheets. Could you please suggest what I could try? Really don't want to have to purchase another shredder if this one can be repaired.

Hi, sorry I just saw your message. Yes I got it working again, yeah! After taking it apart and cleaning both sensors 3x, the last cleaning worked and now it's working like new again. I'm guessing the oil must have been enough to block the sensor. Thank you for the great video!@@filipjtech
My shredder was working yesterday I shred a lot The green light comes on but it won’t receive paper either way So what is it?
I tried to comment yesterday. We have this exact shredder, and reverse works, but forward does not. Cleaning the two paper sensors did not solve the problem.
Should one of them light up when the power is on? Both are dark; one is clear and the other is tinted.
Do you have any more advanced testing, like checking the voltage or continuity at various points?

My shredder blades do not move when placing paper in but can hear the motor? The sensor picks up paper and triggers motor but the blades do not move

This worked, opening up the dam screws and cleaning that little black IR sensor, it was dusty.
