    SMDs in a f**kn' _AMP_ !!!
One, invisible fracture and you have a door stop instead of an amp. And what do pc boards hate more than anything (especially SMD)?
    1: Heat
    2: Vibration
Just strap your laptop to the engine well of your car, and take a bet to see how long it lasts. That's how stupid these designs are. I hate the fact that they charge good people to get an established name brand, sometimes a particular model (Like Fender does). And what they get is a weak, disposable product. Anything is only as strong as it's weakest component. Anything.

Its fun to deal with digital circuts, yes, you need a good microscope, soldering station and digital scope, but sometimes its even easier (and cheaper) then repair a tube amp. Real troubles becomes only when you have failed firmware or custom proprietary dsp ic

Why are people so scared to work on things with ICs? ha. IC's honestly hardly EVER go bad.. its usually a cold solder joint, or a loose wire connection with these types of electronics. Not saying they are better, cause they DEF arent lol, but just not a whole lot of parts that fail on them. Now things with BGA chips on the other hand... haha those are a PINA to fix lol.

From my limited experience, most failures in electronics is in the power section. Not the complex stuff. Either the output or the power supply. If you can get your hands on a broken one with minimal risk, try it. I think you'll find "the more things change, the more they stay the same" - AKA same stupid stuff.

Had a Marshall Code 25 or 50 kept blowing the fuse on the power supply. Turns out it was common amongst some of them. I emailed Marshall directly because I couldn't find a schematic for the power supply, they wouldn't send me one because I wasn't a Marshall dealer, and wouldn't even sell me a new one. Last modeling amp I'll own. I prefer simplicity these days, glad that happened because I relied on that thing too much for my tone.

A while ago, I had a similar problem with a GK 100cel digital guitar amp. The power section shut down, and there were no service techs around who were authorized by GK to get the schematics. Do you do a Crate GT200 DSP 2X12? It doesn't turn on, no blown fuse, the DSP is a separate circuit board. Hybrid tube/solid-state 2x12. It's been kept in an Anvil case pretty much since new. Modeling amps are use and throwaway. I do have an early modeling amp, the original Roland Micro Cube. I love it. When it's done, I'm planning on coverting it to a tube amp. I have a schematic that was drawn out using a single ended hand wired tube amp using 5878 and 5672 tubes. I looked all over the place and couldn't find how to get in touch with you.

Wait a minute. What was the symptom? While I agree that boards with lots of surface mount ICs would be a major hassle to track down a defect, the symptom could point to a power supply failure, or output amp failure. Both of those circuits are relatively easy to repair. I've made money and lost money repairing modeling amps. It depends on the symptoms and the failure history of the particular model.

Basically a Bluetooth speaker with a built-in guitar amp digital simulator. No way to fix that if the fault is outside of the analog circuit. Some people could troubleshoot it, but the question is if you can even get any of those ICs let a lone the programs that you will most likely need to load onto some of them.
And these ain't the simple and rugged old school digital ICs from the 80s which basically last for ever either.
In the end, it will cost more than just replacing the whole board if you can even get ahold of one.

That's the con of modeling amps, they may have a lot of options, effects, etc, but when something breakes it's like repairing a computer. There were two Fender Mustangs in my school, my teacher's Mustang II and school's Mustang III that broke before I started going there. Mustang II sounded OK and the teacher liked but it broke too, at the least show before pandemic (if I remember correctly it didn't wanted to power on before the show, then it powered on for the show, then it didn't again, I'm not sure, I already finished the school at that point but I was helping them, as a 'roadie'). It was decided that it's not worth to repair the III, later school bought Marshall Code 25, then Mustang was legally thrown out (I don't know how to call it in English, it was removed from school property list / listed as recycled or something), I took it home and turned into 1x12 cab. I still got the board, but I don't even have idea what is broken. The cab sounds ok, but I'm thinking about buying better speaker. The teacher still haven't replaced his Mustang II, in the school he plays school amps and at home he plays acoustic or semi-hollow anyway, I offered him to exchange it for my Orange Crush 35 LDX, it's worth the same on used market and even if I don't repair that Mustang, I can still turn it into a cab, plus it wasn't for that teacher I wouldn't get the previous Mustang. Sometimes Peavey Bandit 112 pops up on used market at the same prices, If I will be able to hunt that, I will offer the teacher exchange for that, I always thought that would be perfect inexpensive amp for him, he was always very pro-modeling dude and I was always very pro-analog dude and I was trying to convince him to 'turn to the dark side'.

    • @ravenslaves
      @ravenslaves ปีที่แล้ว +2

A very common problem with SMD construction are these intermittent issues that pop up, like the one you're describing. _Usually_ caused by a small, invisible, break in a solder connection. Sometimes it makes the connection, sometimes it doesn't.
The main problem when this occurs, if that is the problem, is,
1: it can be very hard to find.
2: if you do find it, repairing it can be a nightmare.
Messing up a SMD repair often makes things much worse. More parts can get damaged. You can suck up the component you're trying to fix in a single drop of solder etc... It's seldom worth the effort. Either replace the board you think the problem is on, if you can. Or do hat you did and get a nice speaker and can out of it.
...which was probably the smart choice!

  • @radomirblazik

A decent microscope, a decent rework hot air station, a decent amount of patience... I had to fix a lot of SMD boards, almost always there are leaky caps (SMD variety), cold joints and if anything with custom firmware or any custom ASIC goes, utterly unfixable. On top of not having any schematic most of the time. Swapping out opamps is actually easier than with thru-hole components, just heat up, tweezers make go fly across the room, clean a little bit, new ic, solder, done.
