USSS is a law enforcement agency, not a military one. They were part of the Treasury until the DHS organization post-9/11. They also police counterfeit currency and are responsible for protecting some infrastructure. They're currently critically understaffed and overworked.
Especially since the patriot act made them able to spy on American citizens.
They don't keep track of counterfeits just look at all of the fake silver eagle's and gold buffalo's coming from China!
The US Secret Service was part of the US Treasury Department, but was realigned under the Department of Homeland Security, once that Department was formed.
And it has been downhill since.

I think the training rounds you referred to were Simunitions. The pistol rounds are 8mm, and the rifle rounds look like a 5.56 case. The weapons systems involved a specialized AR upper and a custom slide and barrel for handguns.
When I was in the Marines, we did training with the paint shots... PAIN in the butt! if one broke in your rifle, Having to clean it up!

Here is an interesting question. What does the USSS do when an agent in charge of investigating threats against a protectee has been forced to delete threatening posts they made about the protectee? If you want more details, look up FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeffery Veltri. Veltri is in charge of investigating attempts on Trump, but was forced to delete social media post he made against Trump. Normally, I would say someone's opinion doesn't reflect on their work, but given how low the level of trust in the government is right now... The optics are bad to have a Trump hater investigating attempts on Trump.
