Why Don't We Have Self-Driving Cars Yet?

  • Although many new cars feature technology that partially assists with driving, we still do not have fully self-driving cars available for purchase. In addition to perfecting the technology required for them, there are a number of other factors standing in the way. They include poor road infrastructure, the communication systems needed to connect these cars with one another, and the additional traffic laws needed to regulate these vehicles.

    One thing that hasn't been addressed is what happens if the autonomous systems get hacked by remote. The only way I can live with cars with fully autonomous capabilities is if those systems are optional and can be turned off. There should be a kill-switch (like a manual override) in case the vehicle gets taken over by a foreign signal. Steering wheels should be standard on all vehicles so the driver can take control in case he/she takes over during a manual override in an emergency. This is something that should be thought out.

    There is this Scandinavian country that is installing cable like rods under the middle of the streets. - these rods produce a magnetic field which in turn - turns an electric type motor on the underside of the car. The only small battery it has is to get it in and out of the park lot. - but once on the main road - electric cars motor is turning the vehicles wheel assembly which is propelled by this electromagnetic field - Very Cool.

    It is interesting to observe an autonomous car in action on the road. The current autonomous car models show great stability and performance on the road. The way the car is changing lane flawlessly and efficiently navigating through the traffic shows that the AI is very advanced as it is independent in its decision making. The reaction time of the car is also way better than a normal individual which leaves to rethink about my driving skills. The future of autonomous cars appears to be achievable as the car manages to safely transport its passengers towards destination. To me, this is a next level of security and trustworthiness as an individual could rest while being behind the steering wheels. However, this goes way beyond the road safety laws as the driver is paying no attention to the road. I will still argue that autonomous cars are not 100% ready for the general public as they still need to master the different environments and conditions such as in dense traffic, urban area and in cyclonic weathers. I will not personally put my trust in a car driven by AI until it is proven to be 100% trustworthy.

  • @BigUriel
    @BigUriel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    People don't understand that the problem isn't the technology, it's the human element. We could mass produce self driving cars and built suitable roads for them with the technology we have today. But a self driving car can never be programmed for everything other road users might do.
    If all cars were self driving, and better yet they could communicate with each other so they always know eachother's position, speed and route, there would never be any accidents or traffic jams. But as long as they have to share the roads with human drivers they'll never be reliable.
    And even if all cars were self driving and interconnected things can still go wrong. A deer might jump in front of a car going 70mph, and whether the car hits the deer or makes an emergency stop you don't want people lying down and sleeping inside it.

    Beyond the liability questions, manufacturers are reluctant to admit that vehicles which rely on communications exterior to the vehicle are susceptible to malicious hacks. Eliminating such a need would require computing systems that are not only incredibly expensive, but impractical due to the limited space in personal vehicles. Also, developing technologies for self-driven vehicles is fiercely competitive. Though a self-driven can be made, the optimum technology to do so would be ridiculously expensive given licensing from multiple developers would be necessary.
