Controversial statement: I have a fairly strong notion that the subtext of the video is that rather than it being an ordinary love story, Jisoo is playing a sex worker, a 'flower girl.' In past centuries in China, Japan and Korea, the title 'sing-song girl' (Chinese: 歌女), or 'flower girl,' was a slang term for a courtesan. The yellow building which Jisoo stands outside of, looking in at a set of pearls, was painted that colour specifically for this MV shoot. It strongly suggests the 1996 Korean film ‘Yellow House,’ which is about a sex worker who struggles with her identity when she is forced to leave the Yellow House brothel of the title.
Jisoo is playing the role of someone who is deeply conflicted by her profession, with all the waiting around in hotel rooms and lobbies, avoiding eye contact with maids and elevator operators, plus all the inevitable heartbreak and loneliness. At the same time she is still attracted to the money she makes and the sense of power it brings, as this may be her only alternative to poverty.
